Seriously, when I finished Rick's script for the first issue (this image is from page one of issue 3), I was left with this ineffable feeling, this inexplicable profundity. Unlike anything else. Can't wait!

In my new graphic novel Enter the Blue, part of the story takes place in a kind of alternate dimension--one created by music--and I wanted those scenes to have different storytelling rules from the "real-life" scenes. Here are a few pages to demonstrate this contrast!

The "real-life" scenes read one page at a time, with white gutters and a nice "breath" to the page provided by the negative space created by that extra gutter space.

Meanwhile, those scenes in The Blue are almost all built on double-page spreads that read across the center divide--which means on that first tier of panels I always had to have a wide panel spread that divide so readers wouldn't get confused about the reading order.

The other obvious difference between these two visual treatments is that, for the scenes in The Blue, I used blue ink washes to get the colors and values down--I just love art that's full of texture and here it makes those scenes feel so heavy and good--and also, the "real-life" scenes have virtually no instances of the color blue in the imagery!

Without getting *too* spoilery, in the climax of the book we get scenes in the real world and in The Blue happening simultaneously which provided another nice challenge.

If you're a comic creator, feel free to be bold in your manipulation of form to reflect and enhance your story/themes/plot. Comics are SUCH a form-forward medium--so, from my POV, you might as well go for it and push your pages around like this.

It's fun to try to find ways to control readers so that they read the panels in the "wrong" order--instead of L-R, top-to-bottom. In this page from my new graphic novel ENTER THE BLUE, the music notation pushes the reader down, up, and down, which brings a fitting momentum to Jimmy's collapse!

to simplify: churches are forbidden to promote specific political parties or candidates, in order to maintain tax-exempt status.  no religious institution is allowed to make explicit political statements, including “this party is bad,” “this party is good,” “you should vote for x,” “you should not vote for x,” or “let’s raise money for x political party or campaign.”  all of those things are super illegal!  if they’re going to act as a political entity, they need to pay taxes like any other political entity!  report their asses!!!!
