Whenever I am feeling hopeless, I like to look at the contents of the golden record on the Voyager Space Probes.
The amount of hope that was put into those records is inspiring. We weren't perfect then, and we aren't perfect now. But we love, we want to share what we have.
One of the greetings literally asks "Have you eaten yet?"
We do not know anything about whoever may find it in the future, but we care deeply. We want them to take care of themselves.
The Golden Record is such a wonderful thing. The people who sent that probe knew it's incredibly unlikely that anything would actually intercept it, let alone be able to interpret it. But we still tried to put our best foot forward anyway, we still tried to hold out a hand and say "hello, this is who we are, or who we try to be, the best parts of us, and we want to know you too. have you eaten yet?"
This one resonated with me
[text id: "Birds feel something akin to pain (and fear) just before migration," writes poet Lorine Niedecker, and "nothing alleviates this feeling except flight (the rapid motion of wings)." /end id]
[second ID: Digital illustration. A white bird flies with its wings extended behind it against a dark background. The quote is cut out like strips of paper around the bird. /end ID]

“Crystalline Light,” reduction linocut, 2025. By William Hays
SCROLL UP THAT'S NOT A PHOTOGRAPH!!!!
Okay but I don't think "that's not a photograph" is enough for this. That's a reduction linocut and I'm just going to assume a whole lot of the people here won't know what that means or google it. It means that the artist has had a linoleum block and has made this image by carving pieces out of it bit by bit, printing layers upon layers at different stages of carving to get the layered colours on the final print. Hypereaslistic paintings and pencil drawings and such are impressive, but I beg you all to look up how linocuts are done to get an idea of how this has been done.
jennifer cantwell, 2011
“the recording is of a blackbird in my garden in the north of scotland. the idea of the piece is that it's a letter home from a migrated bird, telling the family of its new life and making the connection between the migrant and the homeland.” - jennifer cantwell
"In the same way that your heart feels and your mind thinks, you, mortal beings, are the instrument by which the universe cares. If you choose to care, then the universe cares. If you don't, then it doesn't." -- Brennan Lee Mulligan, D20, Fantasy High

Work isn't vibing with me today. Does anyone have pictures of small wild animals being gently grisped by human hands, unharmed but looking very displeased about it. Like little birds and small mammals being held like this.
I'm glad that this was the post where everyone understood the assignment. Great work from everyone in the reblogs, but you get a bonus for having two!

The thing about the moon is maybe you don’t need to write a poem about the moon. The moon’s been done, we’ve discussed it. It’s a coin a mirror an eye a lantern in the darkness. It’s a rock in space. It’s the dang moon we’ve all seen it! Is there something you can notice that’s is more surprising than the moon???
I cannot express how much I adore dappled shadows formed by sunlight in paintings and photography and in real life
I also adore how this pattern has manifested itself in the form of camouflage for some species
The echo of those same dappled shadows that we paint in our art is genetically coded into a baby’s fur in order to keep her safe. A beautiful thing.
