I have twice now played RPG characters who are not allowed to lie and who were incredibly deceptive anyway. It’s so much fun. I’ve also gotten a lot of mileage out of:

-Stating preferences instead of facts. “I’d like you to know that we’re here to inspect the building.” (We’re not, but it would really make it more convenient if you thought we were.)

-Referencing the statements of other people who can lie. “My colleague would like to tell you we’re building inspectors from the gas company.” -Placing two unrelated statements next to each other, it’s not my fault if you connect them. “Gas leaks can be incredibly fatal. I think you should evacuate the building.” (There’s a monster I can’t tell you about that I want to get civilians away from. Also, here’s an unrelated fun fact!)

-Asking leading questions. A question isn’t a statement of fact! “So there’s a gas leak that means we should evacuate?” “Didn’t you hear what I just said?!”

#both of my current daggerheart characters love to do this and it’s so bonkers fun #challenge with spelljammer character making him yap incessantly (inherent bard obnoxiousness) while saying nothing #challenge with age of umbra character is another party member has 24/7 lie detection powers targeting him specifically (long story)#so we’re making liberal use of half-truths and lying by omission. smile

it’s so special to me that so much of fan culture is textual analysis for the love of the game. like thank god there are people in my phone who are also thinking about this thing i love so much that they are writing transformative fiction as character studies and setting clips of the show to music with theme-relevant lyrics and writing long text posts analyzing every line of dialogue like!! yay!!!

As a result however I’ve really become enchanted by my Tav who started as a character I made on a whim and morphed into a fully fledged oc I’d like to run at a table sometime. Kelva Kil’ana beautiful weirdgirl drow bard who learned to stop stretching the truth because her reality is more interesting than anything she could make up. Shouldn’t have wished to live in more interesting times I know that’s right. Married a real deal folk hero and agreed to go to hell with him no questions asked to save their best friend and also for funsies. Astarion hates her ass. She’s gonna be grand duke consort of Baldur’s gate someday

#drow bard was maybe the best combo i could’ve stumbled upon for a first playthrough #it unlocks so many fun stupid rp things #also yes she did get wyll out of that warlock pact AND saved his dad AND they’re gonna kill mizora’s groomer ass #i like it in act iii when lots of good things happen to wyll it made me smile. yes he IS the pride of baldur’s gate!!!!!!#i like to think kelva’s progression on him was like #oh he acts like a fairytale hero but it’s probably fake -> oh wait he actually is that awesome and kind ->#oh wait he is also simultaneously a fairytale princess and i’m no knight in shining armor but goddammit i’m gonna save him #as it turns out she’s the weird silver-tongued roguish but kind trickster in the face of evil he’s always dreamed of. AND she can dance #oh also she’s an eilistraee worshipper and finding her through a love of music is what pushed her to escape the underdark #okay rant over. i now have two weirdo bards taking up lots of brain space so that’s cool
