ok i’m not done w this because i also love how he prefaces it with “watch this, it’s a useful little spell” like he’s about to teach them reparo or something like that but it’s a spell that helps you be a dick more efficiently

and before it he’s so calm and collected, taking it all in stride, but i am SURE that when he’s like “watch this, kids”, he’s laughing inside because he’s a teacher and he’s using the position to teach kids to bother peeves. his friends would have been so happy

While I don’t think that he is evil, I don’t like Amos Diggory very much. It has a lot to do with the fact that he is bragging about the fact that Cedric won a Quiddditch match against Harry when it was a match that Harry could have died in if Dumbledore didn’t catch him in time. It was also worse when Cedric kindly asked him to stop and he just continued bragging.

If you were defending Barty Crouch Senior, what would your argument be on his behalf?

*frowns deeply* It would really depend on what I was defending Crouch Sr. from. Unlike his son Barty Crouch Jr., Crouch Sr. wasn’t ever accused of a crime, as his breaking of his son out of Azkaban and his use of the Imperius Curse were only revealed after his death. And honestly, I wouldn’t feel much interest in defending him as a person. Although yes, he clearly hated Dark wizards, and that’s good, he took his fanatical obsession with quashing them to such a ruthless extreme that he was willing to use evil methods in the name of defeating evil. He neglected his wife and son to the extent that his son got caught in the company of some of the worst Death Eaters Voldemort had ever selected, and Sr. was completely blind-sided by it. The books leave it a little bit vague about whether Jr. had been telling the truth or not when he screamed his innocence at his father, only for Crouch Sr. to shout him down and shut him out…but whether Jr. was active in torturing the Longbottoms like the Lestranges were or simply got wrapped up in something way over his head at first and only ended up falling off the deep end after his father turned his back on him at his trial, Crouch, Jr. was one of Voldemort’s most loyal followers, and I’m sorry, but we can lay blame on Crouch Sr. for that in either case. Either Crouch Sr. neglected Jr. so much and Mrs. Crouch was so starry-eyed over her precious baby that both of them failed to see the darknesses in Jr.’s heart that encouraged him to join the Death Eaters whole-hog while Voldemort was first powerful, or Crouch Sr.’s merciless rejection and imprisonment of Jr. after the fact spurred Jr. to embrace Voldemort with open arms.

That being said, though, Jr. is still culpable for his actions. No matter how terrible his father had been to him, Jr. was still unconditionally loved by his mother and (arguably) Winky the house elf, both of whom would never have wanted him to become a Dark wizard. And choosing to stand with a despicable, evil man like Voldemort out of pure loyalty alone? Yeah, that takes an amazing amount of immorality and insanity to do. As for Crouch Sr….well, his fatal flaw was a very human one. To borrow a sentiment from The Dark Knight, Sr. fought villainy long enough that he had to watch himself become the villain. We humans often forget to look at the big picture and therefore get stuck looking at things solely from our own narrow point of view where we are right and everyone else is wrong. I’ve known plenty of people with no self knowledge who have a lot of difficulty separating their perception of the world from the way things actually are, and that kind of a flaw can be crippling in certain circumstances. It prompts you to see others in opposition to you just because they’re not agreeing with everything you say, elevate your needs, beliefs, and desires above everyone else’s, and shut out all thought processes that could contradict your world view. It’s just tragic that a flaw that so many people have had to be expressed in someone who held such a level of authority and power over other people’s lives.

I love the scene in HBP where Harry and Hermione are in potions and Hermione looks crazy because I feel like thats what she would look like when she tries to cook for Ron for the first time. I think Ron would think it was cute and then kick her out of the kitchen because he is the only one allowed to cook from then on.

This is gonna sound crazy, but I feel like JKR herself in her writing is prejudiced against muggles (ironic considering the theme of the series). The only muggles characters in the series are villainous, and squibs are pretty much portrayed as living birth defects and get terrible representation (Filch? Really?) as well. Non-magical people are always depicted as useless and incompetent and undesirable. Hermione’s parents aren’t even given names.

I’m not sure when it became cool to crap on fans for liking a character because of the actor portraying them, but it’s tiring and lame. If someone likes Snape because of Alan Rickman, who cares? If someone likes Draco because of Tom Felton, great? Fans don’t have to justify why they like/hate a character. Isn’t that what it means to be a fan of an actor?
