A German regional court has ruled that Google is directly liable for the content of its AI search overviews. According to the court, previou
Let’s fucking go
This is HUGE.
1. The court holds Google responsible for statements made by its AI, considering them Google's statements (search engines have limited liability for results in their engine as they're the words of other sites/companies/people), meaning when their AI lies/hallucinates they're liable for the defamation/harm resulting from those statements.
2. Google's defense that customers are generally aware of the lack of reliability and are responsible for fact checking was dismissed. As the court pointed out, that would "significantly diminish" AI Search's stated purpose and it can't be distinguished from Google's business practices/statements as a search tool.
3. Studies have found about 91% of Google's everyday AI responses are accurate, leaving millions of searches per HOUR with potential liability for falsehoods. 56% of correct responses weren't supported by the sources the AI listed. Both of which mean Google is now liable for a LOT more AI "errors."
4. Google was held liable for 80% of court costs in this case and this precedent is expected to reverberate around the world. This is a massive shift from the 3rd-party search provider role Google has previously played and it comes right as they've tied ALL searches to their AI search.
TL;DR Google reeeeeally stepped in it this time.
I'm sorry number two has me cackling. "Customers are generally aware of the lack of reliability" do you know HOW MANY PEOPLE come into my place of work asking if we have a notary and then getting mad when we tell them no. Because we don't, we haven't for over 15 years, and we have no plans to add one to the staff (for lots of reasons not worth getting into here).
But There's another Library with a really similar name to ours, in another state, that does offer a notary.
Once upon a time when pointing that out to patrons they'd still get mad, because you're insinuating that they looked up the wrong website information when obviously they would never make a mistake like that (they would, one time we had to talk a man down who was furious because he'd talked to us on the phone and we told him we had a notary. this did not happen. because we do not have a notary. he called the wrong library).
Now though? Now the google AI has started hallucinating and will tell people that Our Library has a notary, and when people come in asking for things and we tell them no, and they say "oh, well the internet said-" we get to say "the Google AI overview is hallucinating, ma'am." Hilariously, this has actually eased the anger, because now we're not telling them that they looked up the wrong information (which people still do, for the record), it's Google Itself that is misleading them.
TL;DR? No, ask anyone who works with the public and they'll tell you the same. Customers can't tell that the overviews are flawed/incomplete, and it's causing real problems all the time.
very suspicious about any talk of needing to base your politics on empathy. like any emotion empathy is very easily manipulated, and even besides that that is a meaningless statement. im sure plenty of white supremacists feel pretty empathetic about the plight of the white man or whatever
Times That Copyright Expansion Has Historically Fucked Over Artists On An Institutional Level:
Sampling rights becoming prohibitively expensive to use by small artists
Musicians being forced to sign over sampling rights to their record company, making any benefits they would hypothetically gain moot.
The Digital Milennium Copyright Act leading to the vidmaker-stomping nightmare that is ContentID
The DMCA leading to making it harder than ever to preserve media due to the way it prohibits tinkering with any locks the megacorps put on it, meaning it's way easier for artists' hard work to end up vaulted and lost.
The way basic chord progressions and musical styles have become copyrightable thanks to various lawsuits by the Marvin Gaye estate
The fact that the artists of the past used to be able to remix; adapt and iterate on art made within 56 years of them, likely created in their lifetimes, and now artists can only do those things with art produced nearly a century ago by people long dead.
New and independent artists being crowded out of the market by megacorp-owned IPs that would be public domain (and thusly convey less of an overwhelming advantage-via-marquee-value to megacorps) if the US had its pre-1976 copyright laws.
Times That Copyright Expansion Has Actually Materially Helped Artists On An Institutional Level:
????????
Times that Copyright Expansion Resulted In Something Kinda Funny:
When Metallica did a twitch concert and got a copyright strike on their own music as a direct result of their lobbying for copyright expansion
being anti-amatonormativity in a romance centered world is like watching half the people you know put all their eggs in one basket and then drop the basket and all their eggs break and they’re crying and swearing they’re never gonna do that again and then a month later they have all new eggs in a new basket and they tell you the problem was they didn’t have a strong enough basket or fresh enough eggs and then they drop the fucking basket again.
I think some people on this post don’t know what the phrase “don’t put all your eggs in one basket” means… or why it means that.

TL;DR Google reeeeeally stepped in it this time.
5. If the words are Google's, this solidifies the position of universities who demand that all answers from AI are fully cited. If all the in-line citations now have to be (Google, 2026), that's going to make it obvious when someone's trying to use Google as a source. There's still the difficulty with people who are academically dishonest by trying to pass off the AI writing as their own. 6. 91% accuracy is officially too low to use as a source of references, which means the AI can't be used as a source of references either. This makes it less legitimate for such purposes than Wikipedia of all places (Wikipedia might need date/time proof of when it was accessed for the reference to be valid, but at least it is possible to prove the link existed at a particular date and time). 7. This will help encourage the rollout of courses on how to avoid AI search for students who need academic accuracy, because it's statistically not good enough to use. 8. This strengthens the case intellectual property authors have against Google in the EU, as this is proof that an intellectual property transfer took place.
so many people don't understand how abelist it is to kill your brother with a rock
praying for everyone Black in Belfast rn. hella Black ppl lost they homes as a result of this antiblack terrorism.
like ok allegedly the white people in Northern Ireland terrorizing mainly Black people and poc are British loyalists and not “real Irish” but that video stating that is showing more concern for the white Irish people currently hiding in their homes “in fear” of harm, while real life Black people are actively being harmed lmao like??? get up! if you say you’re not like these white supremacists than show up in defense for the Black people currently being mobbed by people who look like you!
paying liberal lip service does nothing but make sure history doesn’t remember you as the “actual bad guys”, just the cowardly bystanders & it damn sure doesn’t make any moves to protect anyone Black!
i don't believe in god anymore really but i prayed for them
history repeats and repeats and repeats…
"As a trans man, it's your responsibility to protect women!!" Hi, you're a benevolent misogynist. That's like. That's the most obvious benevolent misogyny I've ever seen. Hope this helps!!
Important addition
[Image ID: Tumblr tags reading: same people who say this freak the fuck out the second a trans guy implies they need healthcare, we are not your fucking punching bags we are not your meat shields, while yes we should uplift people, nobody in the trans community should have responsibilities (under this specific definition) /End ID]
the way feminism just died in recent years is crazy. a whole like 20 steps back!!!

I am going to have a fucking stroke the fuck are you on about
Oh, yeah, let's compare overly elaborate skincare routines that women choose for themselves (albeit under the influence of advertising that, in aggregate, has a very negative effect on perception of women and their bodies) and pay for with their own money with the fucking tradwives who actively promote submitting yourself to a sexist man. Surely spending way too much on skincare is the same thing as devoting your entire life to an extremely unequal relationship and actively eshewing all forms of independence, financial, social or emotional.
We owe so many apologies to choice feminism holy fuck
-Sincerely, a fat hairy queer you claim to speak for
You’re not reading closely - it is root and branch and pipeline. Choice Feminism, of which I am a personal advocate, only works if you’re making an INFORMED choice, if you know WHY you’re doing what you’re doing and what the ramifications of your decisions are. Choice Feminism requires constant critical thinking and a lot of people aren’t doing it.
These skincare routines, the ones that the OP is referencing specifically, the ones that are eight steps a session and want you to use red light therapy and dermal fillers and microneedling - why are you doing this for yourself? Okay, it makes you feel good. Why? Is it that you are taking the time to care for yourself because you’re lacking care in another are of your life? It’s anti-aging; okay. Are you using anti aging products for a health reason, because you have a family history of skin issues, or because you fear aging? If you fear aging, then why do you fear it? If it’s for your self-image, why are you comparing yourself to others?
Yeah, it’s a lot, asking why why why why like a toddler. It’s soooooo much easier to sit back and not be critical and just go “it makes me feel good” and let someone else do the thinking for you.
And that’s the pipeline, right there; if you outsource your critical thinking skills, you outsource your agency.

Hollywood has gone backwards in size inclusivity too. Seeing all these emaciated women crying in interviews because they’re malnourished on Ozempic and loosing their ability to regulate their emotions is so hard. It reminds me of all those stories about Judy garland living on coffee, bone broth, cigarettes, and diet pills while they were filming Wizard of Oz.
I think back to all the old misogynistic stereotypes about women being week and over-emotional and wonder how many of our great-grandmothers were starving themselves to try and keep their husbands from straying because there was no life outside of marriage and their reputation and wellbeing was dependent on their attractiveness.
SUPER TOP SECRET WORK HACK!!! If you explicitly tell people, "You are an adult and a professional, I trust you to do your job; just keep me in the loop and let me know if there are questions," then thank and/or praise them when they accomplish your mutual goals? they will keep doing things for and with you. Sometimes they will even side with you over other people in the organization, because you've taken the time to establish that baseline respect and trust! hashtag winning or whatever
I just want to say this can work with kids too, mostly because of the 'respect' thing.
This past month, Parks & Rec has been doing a lot of work on the field adjacent to my school. They have trucks with flatbeds, mowing/tree-cutting/postholing machinery, etc. And when they arrived, I (campus monitor) was told I would need to herd the kids away from the trucks/machinery and basically prevent them from creating a dangerous situation.
So when recess came around and the kids stampeded out the door I held them up and I said (being funny but at the same time serious, you know how it is, kids listen better if you're funny)
"Okay, I know that you're all smart AND mature, right? And talented and good looking? Definitely the smartest and most talented class in this school? (I say this to every class, they're all 'my favorites'.) And because you're SO intelligent and mature, I don't need to actually TELL you that these guys have vehicles and machinery that you need to stay clear of, right? Because I know you figured that out already, and I also know that YOU know how sad I would be if any of you were run over, or squashed, or had a pole fall on you. I would be SO SAD, like, I would probably have to lie down on the floor and cry. So you're not going to make me cry, right? I can trust you to stay away from the trucks and machines no matter where they are on the field? Because you're wonderful and amazing? My favorites? My inspiration?"
And they're laughing at me of course, because I'm being so dramatic. Some of them are "Yes, and-"ing my dramatics and inventing more involved mourning processes I should undertake if any of them get run over. Some of them are yelling at me that they are NOT mature yet and they are VERY STUPID and I should know this.
It's been three weeks. We had one conversation about it. None of them have gone anywhere near the trucks. This is actually in excess of the typical elementary-schooler's working memory and I'm very proud of them. I haven't had to blow the whistle at ONE person for getting too close even when the trucks were literally 40 feet from the actual playground.
"I know I can trust you to do this", even when phrased with humor, is like a magic key that unlocks teamwork+cooperation.
I usually phrased it to middle-schoolers as, "I was a weird artist before I was a teacher, so I don't understand how children work, really. So I am going to treat you guys like adults unless and until you give me a reason not to." It's amazing how far they'll go to keep that adult status.
Call them out. Burst their bubble.
Hey all, while we're busy normalizing women with hairy legs, hairy armpits and bushy pubes, let's also normalize women with hairy upper lips, hairy chins, hairy side burns, hairy chests, and all the other places where women are supposedly magically hair-free.
