I had been told about this before, but it is so much worse than I had assumed. That owl is very openly displaying distress in every part of that clip. Its beak is held open and it is gular fluttering, a behavior very similar to panting in dogs and done for the same reason: thermoregulation or as a response to stress. It’s on the very tips of the fingers on that glove to stay as far from that person as possible and gripping down with the left talon. The head feathers are pulled inward on the back and the ear tufts are completely flat against the head which is a common sign of owls with learned helplessness being handled.

To put into easier to understand terms, this owl is communicating the same thing as a dog hyperventilating and trembling while flinching at every move people around it make or a cat with its ears flat and pressing itself into a corner wide eyed with dilated pupils and hissing whenever someone looks at it.

This is not an owl having a good time at all, and the fact it is then tethered to a perch that could literally kill it if it panicked and tried to fly really is icing on the cake.

Wild animals are not props. It is animal abuse to treat them this way just to shock your friends and audience. You should never terrorize any animal just to put on a show.

I love critical roll and the CR cast (even though I haven’t watched recently) and this is really disappointing from them... especially if the owl was sitting there for an extended period of time, such as the continuation of a scene or even the rest of the game.

I don’t know how raucous the game got, but I know there can be a lot of jumping and shouting during intense game moments, moments that could easily panic the owl or cause it additional pain. I cannot think of any reason I would want a wild animal in the room when that energy bomb could go off at any moment.

They could have gone with a plush toy or something, no need to have a stressed out animal as a game prop.
