It takes practice, to become used to sharing his space with a boy who grins and chatters and plays keepie uppies with the insubstantial football they received in payment from their seventh client. It takes practice, to be spoken to and have a reply expected. It takes practice for his mind to realize, slowly, that a hand upon his shoulder will not by necessity mean pain.
And so Edwin does not notice at first. He had never been particularly adept at reading the expressions of others, even when he was alive. Charles is alight with smiles; that alone is a monumental change from what he has become accustomed to. Edwin does not pay much heed to all the rest.

Summary:
The thing about being a supernatural, technically-nearly-immortal creature was that dalliances with humans were rarely a good idea and your hookup pool was somewhat limited. Yeah, sure, some harmless fun didn’t hurt anybody, but even that could be exhausting sometimes - for example when you had to use a glamour to appear fully human. When you just wanted a quick fuck, being focused on keeping your magic in charge was a pain in the ass.
That’s why the Cat King didn’t mind sticking around Esther Finch, and that’s why he would probably show up at her door.

It has been seventy years since Edwin has celebrated Christmas.
He does not recall it as much as he would like, all told, but snippets of recollections yet remain: holly and ivy draped from banisters, red velvet ribbons upon the tree, lit candles glowing merrily. In the evening, there was plum pudding to be had, and it aches abominably to realize that he cannot quite recall, any longer, precisely how it used to taste.
From time to time, it quite steals his breath away, the scope and breadth of everything he has lost.
I haven't written much in a while so I'm sorry if this isn't great, this is for my roommates au that I'm kind of obsessed with now tho

Once Edwin and Crystal decided it was time that the Christmas decorations should go up, their partners were VERY excited and decorated very quickly.
Christmas morning was more chaotic than any of them thought it would be. Crystal is the only one who almost never wakes up early, though, when Niko woke up she went to the kitchen to make Crystal coffee and see what she wanted for breakfast. When Niko went out to the kitchen she saw Edwin making himself coffee and Charles was sitting on the counter, talking about some story about work, something to do with Jenny and some blonde woman? Niko didn't quite catch all of the conversation before Charles stopped to say good morning to her and pull a mug out of the microwave.
Edwin turned around to face Niko, “Good morning Niko,” he paused and grabbed her one of Crystal's coffee cups from the cabinet. “I assume Crystal wants her coffee.” he finished the statement as he handed Niko the cup in his hand and then picked his own full mug up, stepping to the side afterwards.
Niko thanked him and filled up the cup as Charles resumed his story about how Jenny had to kick someone out of the bar recently.

Edwin was draped over one side of the couch, his legs on Charles's lap, Crystal was sitting on the other side as Niko arranged everyone's gifts into piles in front of them, Christmas music was on in the background, turned down quite a bit so the group could talk.
The wrapping paper Niko used was blue and had snowmen all over it, Charles's was red and had Santa on it, Crystal used some monochromatic set, Edwin's was tree branches with birds on it.
“Okay! So we start from left to right so Crystal you open one!” Niko explained as she sat down next to her girlfriend on the couch. Crystal picked the top gift up, it was very obviously from Niko with all the stickers on top of the wrapping paper, “Cute.” Crystal commented and gave her girlfriend a kiss on the cheek before starting to unwrap the gift. Once she got the wrapping paper off it was a small pink box, opening that box revealed a small necklace with 'Crystal' as the charm. She smiled when she saw it and had her girlfriend help put it on, giving her a kiss on the cheek as a thank you.
Niko was next to open a gift and she opened one from Charles, she smiled the whole way through unwrapping it, it was in a very taped up cereal box underneath the wrapping paper, when she finally got that open after needing crystal to grab her a pair of scissors from the kitchen to get it open (with a sorry from Charles), it ended up being a pastel Christmas sweater with snowmen on it. She thanked Charles with a hug and then put the sweater on.
Charles was next and the gift he grabbed was from Edwin, it was a box and a letter, Edwin insisted he opened them together. The letter went first, he opened it and read it, with just a bit of trouble cause of Edwin's fancy handwriting. He read the full letter and then looked at Edwin very happily, “We're getting a dog??” he questioned with a clear tone of excitement. Edwin nodded and reminded him to open the box as well, Charles ripped into it very quickly, it was a leash and some nice gloves, for cold winter walks and such. Edwin ended up getting a very long hug and Niko was just about as excited as Charles was.
Edwin's turn! He tried his best not to rip the nice monochromatic wrapping paper, leading to Crystal and Charles teasing him about it. Once he got it opened (even before that), it was obviously a book, when he had it fully opened he smiled down at it, it was a very nice looking copy of Frankenstein by Mary Shelly. He didn't necessarily thank Crystal but he smiled at her at that's pretty much the same thing with him.
