tony’s default is to love to the point of invention. He wants to make things work for people and find solutions and make himself worthwhile. He wants his loved ones lives to be easier, and he wants to be the one to make it because it’s the best he can do for them.

But i find the opposite to be the most compelling expression of love from tony. Not to love to the point of invention, but to trust to the point of decompression. He spends so much time trying to make himself useful, but he has such a hard time believing people when they tell him they don’t want it. When Tony can trust someone enough to believe them when they say they don’t need anything, it is so much more a sign of connection than when he works tirelessly for them.

To hear that he is wanted even when unproductive, and to trust that. To understand that he *could* give them more, and to not do it unless they ask. The vulnerability of being less than your best and trusting someone to stick around.

peter always assumed that if his loved ones died before him, he’s have the horrible privilege of hearing it happen. If he focused hard enough, he could hear a heart stop from blocks again and he’d never let himself imagine being farther than that when someone is in trouble.

He’d always assumed he’d have the privelage of the race, desperately rushing towards his hurt loved one. He always has up until this point. For better or for worse, people die around Peter and peter is there to watch.

So it’s a bit of a shock when he gets home from an ordinary lonely night at patrol, checks his phone, and gets proven otherwise.

Hello! Have you read any fics where Peter accepts Tony's offer to become an avenger at the end of Homecoming and moves into the compound? I'm really curious how Tony thought this would have worked out since Peter is 15 (school, May, etc).

if BARF had existed in iron man 1, do you think obie would have used it to disguise himself when taking tony’s arc reactor at the end?

Obie who disguises himself as Steve. Nobody knows what steve truly looks like now that he’s at the bottom of an ocean, so issues with the hologram tech can be chalked up to that. Steve can be made to be the same size as Obie. Obie can make steve behave however he wants.

And if tony survives and manages to sound an alarm that Steve Rogers is alive and dangerous, nobody would take tony seriously.

Plus, of course, the ramifications on how Tony trusts the REAL steve when he comes out the ice.

Hi! Do you know of any fics where Peter dislikes/hates Tony?

I should be so very clear that for as much as I can (and will!!!!) talk shit about irondad fandom, I still very much enjoy the Tony and Peter dynamic— both canonically in the MCU and in my head (it could’ve been so good, if it was good). They have a complex relationship in the comics that is neither as familial and friendly as the irondads who use comic panels to argue their point say, just as they’re not nearly as antagonistic as comic dweebs who do the same. They’re complex, interesting characters with fundamental differences and striking similarities which leads to DELICIOUS clashing.

That being said, here are a few recs of fics that I think really capture that blend of irondad that I particularly enjoy— leaning more into the complexity:

Peter makes voice memos about his post-spell patrols for the same reason he intentionally infests injuries so they scar:

He likes to tell himself that someday, someone will care about what happened to him during this time of his life. They’ll want proof that he existed while forgotten. They’ll want to know him.

loveeee characters who think they're likable but not lovable. characters who know they have surface-level admirable or alluring traits and so make sure to highlight those traits so that nobody looks closer to see what's underneath. characters who know they're hot or clever or cool and use that as a suit of armor so that no one ever gets close to them, because when they strip bare and show their vulnerability they're not any of those things, which means they have nothing left to make up for who they inherently are

Tony acts like eyes on him are spotlights and cameras because he knows he’s a damn good tv personality but he doesn’t believe himself a very good person when he’s not functioning as entertainment. Even his breakdowns must appear polished because of his emotions are entertaining, he’s allowed to have them.

Peter always knew Tony was going to die.

That was probably what made it hardest to stomach. The knowing. The lingering dread at the back of his neck that he tried so hard to ignore.

Peter recognized patterns. And he knew that everybody died eventually but there was something about the people he chose to stick to, and the people that chose to stick with him. They all had this sense of duty, responsibility, some misplaced virtue that they placed in Peter, for whatever reason. It had happened to his parents, and it had happened to Ben, and he knew Tony would be next. The clock on Peter’s grief had started the second they met, and that’s just how it was.

There was only one way that stories like this ended. It wasn’t neat. It was ugly, grief always was. Didn’t matter how long you saw it coming, it was always going to be like staring an incoming train down as you stood on its tracks.

Sooner or later, it was going to slam through. It didn’t care who was standing there, waiting for it to stop.

whatever. hypermobile peter parker who gets his joints knocked outta place all the time. normal people can’t fix them because trying to move peter’s body is like trying to bend metal, the kid is so dense. he’s obv learned how to pop shit into place himself bc of how frequently it happens. this is frightening to anyone else within 15ft radius of him. shoulders are not meant to bend like that!

There arent enough moments in this day to say everything Peter wants to say to any of his father figures, let alone each of them. There’s too much to say, so he says nothing at all and doesnt visit any of their graves. He visits May’s instead and sits with her, both rooted to the spot in some ways. Because it would be too much to grieve each of them. Becuase it would feel wrong doing it without May. Because Peter doesn’t even have clearance to visit Tony’s grave if he wanted to. Because him and May always distracted one another on this day, and Peter can’t grieve that on top of everything else. Peter sits with May all day, because what else is there to do? He doesn’t have anyone to speak to that can hear him. 

Happy fathers day, Peter Parker. I’m sorry you have nobody to talk about it with.

Tony holding his own open casket funeral as he died of palladium poisoning. He got the best concealer he could find and covered the evidence of his own deterioration. He strategically planned his outfits to hide his slowly deteriorating state without making it obvious hes hiding something. He got very familiar with what his face is supposed to look like, so that he can more accurately paint it on without the eye bags and stress wrinkles and visible decay. He made sure he looked perfect on display, no evidence of the internal shut down.

Nobody needs to see that. They love him too much. It would hurt them.

The routine gets passed down to Peter, staring in the mirror after the very first incident of waking up in a spider-web. He’s tracking his own face and trying to decide if it’s worth hiding the visible exhaustion.

He decides to. Spending a bit of his meager savings on makeup in the hopes of still recognizing the decaying man in the mirror.

Just because nobody knows him doesn’t mean he should let them see how bad it’s gotten. It’s the same thing Tony told himself.
