Why is Irondad/Spiderson popular, anyways?

This is bait, I know it

While I have MANY and VARIED ideas for why irondad was (is???) so popular that range everything from internalized-or-maybe-just-outright racism and misogyny, to projection of their own daddy/parental issues, to the still-racism-but-somehow-more-palatable-for-white-people two white guys syndrome, I think the simplest answer is the clearest:

It’s interesting.

Canonically in the MCU, Peter and Tony are set up as a mentor/mentee relationship where you have Iron Man— who was the flagship character of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe and incredibly popular— being an anchor towards the Avengers, audiences, and the entire ecosystem of that world, being put in proximity to Spider-Man— THEE most fucking popular character of all fucking time that is internationally known and BELOVED— at the perfect moment.

Criticisms of that dynamic aside, the CANONICAL relationship of Peter and Tony is fucking RIFE with potential, interesting dynamics, a world of comics to pull from and entangle with. Add in fandom’s obsession with white men and it was truly A Time™️

Despite what large swaths of the fandom thought, I’ve never been an irondad hater. I’ve written 120+ fics (at least tagged!!!) of the two of them, used to co-mod irondad discords, and was ACTIVE for years because of how much I loved the potential and the interesting stories people could tell about them.

However, irondad fandom and their starker-lite, racist ass, misogynistic as hell complex can fuck off.

Have you seen any fics where MJ or Ned write fanfiction about Spider-Man and Peter finds out?

It’s definitely the most micro of micro tropes that’s floated around for years— I’ve done it a few times as has gruoch— but idk if any fics that SOLELY revolve around that as the actual plot.

A little over six months ago, I got deeply annoyed with a few headcanon posts that argued that MJ would be a fanfic writer for Spider-Man that rubbed me the wrong way. People can write what they want and I can also side eye a hardcore parkner/irondad describing MJ as a fanfic writer in a way that felt terribly exploitative!!

Naturally, I started— and then didn’t finish— a fic that focused on Ned being a fanfic writer that I completely forgot about till this ask. It’s anyone’s guess if I’ll ever finish it but here’s a sneak peep for you to satiate your interest:
