Did you know that many US libraries & Museum have free, searchable archives of hi-res public domain images of all kinds of things such as statues, armor & paintings? They may have them tagged as public domain, open access; free to download, etc.

Here's examples of art I've made using largely or exclusively public domain images:

I mostly use The Metropolitan Museum of Art (huge catelogue) and Getty Museum (more limited variety, but way higher res images), personally, but there's tons of libraries and museums you can go the the sites for and check if they have a public domain catelogue to use :)
