Artificial Instinct

Guys.... I literally can't even describe how much fun I'm having writing at the moment. I'm so happy.

So I'm writing this 17/Zoologist get together story and it's just the best. I love 17, he's so dry and witty, I've written my zoologist, Amya, a little before in prompts, but I've never really unpacked her on this level before and I adore her.

I think something I'm loving about this, is that she's an original character. I'm SO used to writing characters who already exist and finding ways to bring them out in my style, but having a blank slate to invent a character myself and understand what makes her tick and who she is and why has been such a fun challenge.

Anyone who has ever read more than 50 words by me knows that what I love for is story telling through my characters. World building is so boring to me which is why I love fan fiction so much - it's like playing a game on sandbox mode. Give me all the tools and let me just see what I can do.

All the times I've dabbled in original fiction I lose interest pretty quickly because you have to do so much background work before you can get to the fun stuff. So this, this has been so much fun. A world that already exists, a character I already love (17) and an easy enough story to tell (it's a romance, not space politics) and a chance to put my own spin on a whole new person in that world?

I went into this story thinking 17 was the protagonist, but it's become clear as I've written that this is Amya's story. She's so layered and has so many motivations beyond 17 = hot and mysterious, and it's been a joy to write and learn about her I hope when you read it you can see how much love has been poured into these words.

This is just a great story with fun characters in a cool setting.

I'm chipping away, I'm motivated to write, and I hope you're ready for approximately 70,000 words of 17 falling in love without realising thats what happening to him.

This story writes itself

Another fun scene from this 17 story I'm noodling with. I love writing 17, because I feel like his humour style is so similar to my own. Dry and so sarcastic, that he comes really naturally to me.

This is from Ch5, which I'm currently working on. You should be able to expect 10-ish chapters and 50-60,000 words from this in the end I'd say! It's fun, but it's also thoughtful and romantic and deep. I'm sure there is lots of 17/zoologist get together stories out there, but I'm excited to share mine with you.

17 knelt in front of a roughly assembled pile of dry sticks and leaves. It was supposed to be on fire.

It wasn’t.

In his attempts, 17 had selected what he considered to be the two most promising sticks in the immediate area and was currently alternating between rubbing them together and striking them against a rock.

Neither method appeared particularly effective.

He knew how to light a fire using sticks, in theory. In reality, one hundred percent of his campfires to date had been started with a helpful little white-hot energy blast.

"You got that?" A pair of boots obnoxiously appeared in front of him.

"Yup," he replied.

"Do you really?" 17 didn't need to look up to know Amya was smiling. "You've been down there for ten minutes."

"I'm more than capable." It was technically true.

"Need me to show you?" Amya crouched beside him, resting her forearms on her knees. "I, unlike you it seems, actually do know how to do it."

Now he looked across. Her eyes were crinkled at the corners, she was enjoying his incompetence far too much. "I've got it."

"Mhm."

"I do."

"Okay"

17 narrowed his eyes.

Amya's grin widened.

He hated how much she was loving this. More annoyingly, he couldn't quite stop himself from smiling too. "Do me a favour?" he asked.

"Oh, this should be good."

"Go check over there." He pointed beyond the Jeep towards the shady acacia tree. "See if there's a better stick. I think I've stripped this one."

Amya looked at the perfectly serviceable sticks in his hand. “Yep,” she nodded. "It's definitely the stick that's the problem."

"Glad we're on the same page."

With a laugh, she nudged him with her elbow and pushed herself to her feet. "Fine. I'll go find a magical fire stick."

"Appreciated."

Still chuckling to herself, she disappeared around the far side of the Jeep.

17 waited, counted to three and extended a single digit. A tiny spark of energy, too small to see, shot from his fingertip and the kindling erupted into flames. Within seconds, the entire pile was burning enthusiastically enough to suggest it had been lit sometime earlier that afternoon. "Never mind!" he called. "Got it!"

Amya reappeared a few seconds later carrying three sad-looking sticks. She stopped dead in her tracks.

The fire was blazing. Not flickering. Not catching. Blazing.

Big enough to cook a pig over.

For a moment she simply stared at it. “Wow,” she looked at 17, then back at the fire. “You really got that going.”

“Yep,” 17 stood, brushing his hands triumphantly against his shorts. "Just needed a little spark."

I’d really love to see a spin-off series about androids 17 and 18. How they lived and what they were like in personality before Gero took them. What exactly do they know or remember about themselves, even as subconscious memory (I’ve seen the wiki say that. 17′s ability to drive a car well implies that he could do so before being turned into an android, think of the possibilities this brings). How exactly did Krillin and 18 get together and how the rest of the gang reacted when they saw her again first time after the Cell games. What the hell was 17 doing all those years and how he met his wife and why’d he adopt. I want to see how their personalities developed in the 7 year gap between Cell games and world tournament saga. And I want to see them fight over stupid shit and participate in more real battles have some casual family time just chilling together with their families

I just want to see more of those two ok

also it’d be real rad if they got to learn their original names..

I’m so torn by this because I want this, but also, then what would I write about? Those are all my best ideas!

Like this 17 story I’m writing at the moment. I’m SO EXCITED to share it with y’all cause it really feels like some of the strongest, funniest, most heartfelt writing I’ve ever done.

Just a fun lil scene I worked on this afternoon and felt like sharing.

“Look over there,” 17 piped up out of nowhere as they cruised, “elephants.”

Amya, who had been half asleep beside him, shot up in her seat. Sure enough, in the distance, a herd of elephants trundled along. She unbuckled her seatbelt and stood up to peer over the dusty windshield and get a closer look. “Wow,” she muttered.

17 slowed the jeep and veered in the direction of the herd, never getting close enough to startle them. He had no business with the elephants today and therefore no intention of interfering, but the smile on Amya’s face as he approached made the detour feel necessary.

“They seem healthy,” he said, after they spent a few silent minutes in awe of the majestic beasts

"They do," Amya agreed. "No signs of pododermatitis, no obvious joint pathology, skin integrity looks good, and they're distributing weight evenly."

17 was silent for a moment. "You know most people would just say they look healthy, right?"

"Most people didn't spend ten years at university."

“Fair,” 17 chuckled and slowly eased the jeep onward.

Amya, invigorated by an unexpected elephant sighting, was buzzing. Suddenly she couldn’t sit still in her seat, eyes constantly scanning the horizon for the next cool thing.

“What’s your favourite animal?” she asked, turning to look at 17.

He didn’t meet her gaze, “Out here, or in general?” he continued to look directly ahead.

“In general, I guess.”

“Zebra” he answered instantly.

“Zebra?” Amya cried. “Of all the animals in the world, your favourite is a boring old zebra?”

“Sure,” 17 shrugged. “He’s got all the tools to be a horse, beloved by millions. And he decides to just be a stubborn jerk instead. I admire the commitment” He smirked, stealing a glance out the side of his sunglasses as he drove.

Amya shook her head. “You’re being serious right now, aren’t you?”

“Why?” he shot back, “What’s your favourite animal?”

“Oh, that’s easy,” Amya replied. “Otters.”

“And what makes an otter so much cooler than a Zebra, exactly?”

“Have you seen the way they hold hands when they sleep?!” Amya exploded. “Oh my god, it’s so fucking cute.”

“Ok right, so your reason is just as hollow as mine. Got it.”

“Shut up, Ranger.”

Vehemently agreed! And I must say, I LOVE your fanfic! Can't believe I've just found it since I've been into them since they weren't even called K18 yet. (I'm 40. 😅) My very first fanfic was about them, and I wish I still had that 90's-style pink notebook that had printed-out fanart of 18 in a sexy red dress plastered on it!

Recently, since Akira Toriyama's death, and the 40th anniversary of Dragonball, I've gotten back into K18 HUGE, especially since watching Super! I've read a little fanfic, but yours was exactly what I wanted/needed! It's inspired me to think about writing my own again, even though I used to write nothing but VegeBul back in the day! (I think I'm bluelily3 on Fanfiction.net, but not sure... Site doesn't quite work anymore unless I'm reading someone else's)

But anyway, thanks so much for your gorgeous writing! I'm only halfway through Just Another Day, and I'm actually still reading Damaged Goods, but I just had to rave to you so bad that I interrupted my reading (even though this sort of Hurt/Comfort story is Top Tier as far as Krillin fics go for an old empath like me).

Omg! Thank you! From one K18 veteran (I’m 38 🥲🥲) to another this means SO MUCH!!

I’ve literally grown up with K18, there is nothing else in this whole world that gives me more comfort than writing them, it’s in my blood now I think and will make me happy for the rest of my life.

You know how it is, being an adult and all, time for hobbies is usually so bloody far down the list of things I have time for. But whenever I do, it’s always the first thing I want to do and I’m so happy that my silly little stories have made you happy!

Honestly, I have loved writing this. The idea has been kicking around in my mind for such a long time - years, and so to finally have it out in the world to share with others, is really exciting. I know it's not your usual K18 story, but by this point, you should know what nothing I ever write is 'typical' Dragonball fanfic.

I hope you've enjoyed reading this one, even though I wouldn't call the content 'enjoyable'. To me it felt real, with real emotional stakes and real consequences. I hope the end feels satisfying without being forced. I wasn't going for a in your face 'and they lived happily ever after' but I still wanted it to be implied. I put my babies though so much, and really I just want them t be happy.

Anyway, I hope you loved this one, and if you did, I hope you stick around too see what I come up with next.

I’ll be sad to say goodbye to this one, I’ve really enjoyed telling this story. The ‘no one is wrong, but also everyone is wrong’ dynamic is like crack to me, and it’s been fun to bring this idea to life.

In Another Life, Maybe - Chapter 8

So September is the most popular month of the year to be born by faaaaar! 9 months after Christmas and New Years is NO JOKE! It is absolutely cooked to be a birth worker in September and we all fall into our beds and die on the 1st of October.

I have helped welcome 6 sweet babies into the world this month, which is honestly just silly and I way overcommitted myself, but I did it, and they're all here safe, sound and perfect.

Obviously I had no time to even think about writing, I didn't even have time to think about giving this chapter it's final proof read and edit, even though it's been essentially finished for weeks and weeks now. But I got it done tonight, so here it is for you!

After the big emotions and intensity of the last chapter, this one is much slower and more introspective. It feels like a deep exhale. I've very happy with it, and I really hope you'll enjoy it. I'd love to hear your thoughts.
