Battling the most horrendous case of art block since fucking forever, so have some FO4 stuff since I picked up that side quest hell of a project again
“the day you told me you loved me, was the happiest day of my life.”
“I plan on walking this earth with you until the day I die, that give you enough of a clue?”
“Having you this close to me has made me happier than I’ve ever been before.”
“Don’t get too far ahead of me…I like being close.”

“Oh yeah, I’m the type of guy that likes to roam around!”
Your tags got me curious! What evidence do you have towards a Fully Equipped Nick?
Good lord, I wasn’t planning on doing this, but alright.
So, let’s start out with why it’s ambiguous. Nick and DiMA represent sort of a generation 2.5 of synth-kind. Gen-2 synths, as evidenced by the fact that half of them walk around naked, have no discernible genitalia. However, since gen-3 synths are essentially biologically indistinguishable from humans, they definitely have functioning sex organs. Now, they don’t often disrobe, but Danse and Curie are both capable of having sex (as evidenced by dialogue files), and so was Barbara, so it’s safe to assume that all gen-3 synths are similar.
This throws Nick and DiMA into kind of a grey area. Furthermore, evidence from DiMA doesn’t necessarily apply to Nick. Firstly, DiMA is heavily damaged and modified, and is implied to have been created before Nick (both because of the Star Trek allusion to Data and Lore and because DiMA said he saw Nick go through several personalities, which means he was there for Nick’s creation process). So all of our evidence has to come straight from the horse’s mouth- Nick himself. We can’t just stare at DiMA’s less-clothed crotch and try to figure out if there’s a dick somewhere there- the answer may not apply to Nick as well, despite them technically both being in between generations.
So, what do we know about Nick’s senses and perceptions? Well, he’s fully capable of sight, as he reacts to different levels of light and dark (line 728: “Hey. You still there? Can’t see a damn thing…). He can also smell (line 764: “The hell aroma is that?”) and taste (line 197: “The beer tastes like warm spit”), fully able to consume both foods and beverages. The former is evidenced by his idle animation of eating Power Noodles in Diamond City.
Now, half of these things aren’t strictly necessary. Programming a synth to be able to smell and dislike the odor of fertilizer doesn’t make sense from a practical standpoint. And Nick technically doesn’t need to eat to sustain himself (line 812: “I don’t sleep or eat or anything like that”), but he still seems to partake in meals either for social reasons or just because he enjoys it. There was no need for the Institute to build him to be able to consume anything, let alone have a sense of taste, but they included taste buds for some reason, anyway.
In fact, there are plenty of things the Institute could have done to make a more traditionally functional synth without much difficulty. He doesn’t have nightvision, judging by his reaction to being in the dark. Nick can feel pain (line 963: “Never did understand why they programmed us to feel pain”), and the full range of human emotions, from fear, anger, and sadness to joy and nostalgia. Despite a million improvements the Institute could have easily made to make an optimally efficient robot, they seemed pretty set on making Nick’s life experience as similar to a human’s as possible before having invented BioScience. We can only assume that making an approximation of a human from metal was their goal.
After all, the Institute’s goal with Nick’s prototype (as compared to DiMA’S) was to stuff a fully-formed human personality into a robotic body, and that would include sex drive. If they gave Nick the completely impractical ability to eat and drink despite not needing to for survival (which would require the Institute to create a metallic version of the human digestive tract, an extremely difficult task), seemingly only so that he could satisfy cravings or appropriate social interactions, it makes sense they’d provide a way for him to satisfy sexual cravings, as well. Now, it wouldn’t be a fully-functioning human penis (or vagina, for that matter), given the technological restraints at the time, but the Institute’s gone out of their way to make Nick as close to a human as possible without biological components- why draw the line at a modified dildo?
Of course, this reasoning may not apply if Nick is asexual. There is text in-game to support that he feels romantic attraction (considering his occasional flirtatious comments and his attachment to Jenny), but no support for sexual attraction. The ace Nick theory could also make sense if one was assuming that the metallic body doesn’t have any sex organs. The Institute went through dozens of personalities before settling on Nick’s- perhaps the difference was that an asexual Nick may not mind a body sans genitalia as much as non-ace counterparts.
Now, I personally don’t headcanon Nick as ace, but that’s totally up for interpretation, meaning that the whole shebang is absolutely ambiguous. The Institute programmed him to live essentially as a non-biological human, Power Noodle cravings included, despite any practicality in robot design. Thus, if pre-war Nick Valentine experienced sexual attraction, I think it absolutely makes sense that the Institute would give him something down there. If not, perhaps they wouldn’t.
I’ll leave you off with a quote: Nick Valentine, line 1717. “I’m a synth. Synthetic man. All the parts, minus a few red blood cells.”
Nick: You can do this. I have complete faith in you.
[Sole Survivor leaves with another companion]
Nick: There’s like a 30% chance they’ll both die.
“Goodneighbor’s of the people, for the people, you feel me? Everyone’s welcome.”
IT IS DONE!!! My first gif EVER.
this is how I pictured their first kiss too…
Nick Valentine: Is there any machine you can’t charm?
Sole Survivor: Just you apparently.
Nick: What?
Sole: What?
im sorry but you KNOW he would
When I was running around Vault 114 to save Valentine, I found this poster.
…Guess Vault-Tec didn’t have anyone who knows American Sign Language on their team, otherwise they’d have caught that the Vault Boy is signing “vagina.”
That’s not a heart, folks.
((Lmfao at everyone who’s reblogging this with variations of “THAT’S A STRETCH!!”: I’m Deaf in real life, I use American Sign Language every day, this is the joke I make every time someone mistakenly makes a heart this way))
