If I had to explain destiel to a lay person I'd start with dean, dean whose supposed to be this macho manly man right? He's got the leather jacket and the car and the smirk, he flirts and fucks and drinks and and kills the monsters, but, BUT, he's played with this delicate and delicious undercurrent of vulnerability and softness and so all that feels like a play-act right? like, in the second ever episode, the damsel in distress of the week, who he's been flirting it up with, gives him a chaste peck on the cheek and his reaction is less 'ooo I'm gonna get some' and more 'no one has touched me tenderly in years', you get what i mean???
anyways so dean goes to hell, he made a deal to save his baby brother cause the only thing he knows how to do is protect him so he goes to hell, and he spends 40 year in hell being tortured and torturing and then he's rescued. He's rescued from hell by an angel
And this angel, he's intense and weird and sees right to the core of him. And maybe you'd think that's just how angels are but we meet other angels and they're not like him at all. This is Castiel. (but dean just calls him cas, takes 'of G-d' out of his name!!!) And oh by the way heaven is a facist state that wants to take away everyone's free will and jump start the apocalypse. and Dean refuses to accept that, dean fights for humanity and free will and this weird, intense angel well, he agrees with him and he rebels against heaven for him. And they make deep intense, prolonged eye contact and they trust each other with these soft, vulnerable parts of themselves even when they barely know each other. And they become allies and then friends and then family. And along the way they hurt each other and lie to each other and fight each other but they always find their way back to each other. And the angel dies and comes back again and again and again and again and each time and each time it devestates dean more and more and more and more but he always comes back and they end up living together and raising a weird half angel kid together and being each other's rocks
And while all of that is happening over 12 years on our screens, we, in the real world, keep going. Hmmmmm. Seems like there's something going on there. Seems like those two have a pretty intense relationship. seems more than a touch homoerotic. is there perhaps something to this??? and writers and cw execs and actors told us to our faces that we were crazy and also disgusting and how dare we for YEARS they repeatedly told us we were crazy for reading into this while simultaneously making jokes and winks at the expense of. well of the queerness of the whole thing. it was a joke to them, but joking about it is still admitting that it's /there/// but they kept telling us we were crazy for seeing it!!!
and THEN in the third to last episode of this 15 year disaster and arguable hate crime called the cw's supernatural that angel openly, weepingly confesses his big gay love for dean and also kills himself to do it and this once again wrecks dean and leaves him sobbing silently on the floor and we all felt even crazier than all those times they called us crazy!!!
Oh oh and the devil himself, who we've seen multiple times throughout the show disguise himself as people's romantic partners in order to trick them into letting him in, DISGUESES HIMSELF AS CAS IN ORDER TO TRICK DEAN INTO LETTING HIM IN and we're all waiting for the finale for the obvious narrative alley-oop of dean rescuing cas from super hell (he went to super hell don't worry about it) just as their story starts with CAS rescuing dean from hell but instead of that dean eats a lot of pie and then dies on a rusty nail at the age of 41. And we're supposed to be happy about it.
And we all, in real life, went what the fuck where's the gay angel he's barley even mentioned after the big gay love confession?? And then they started going. What gay angel? What confession. You're crazy.
And we went what excuse me the big gay love confession that you filmed and we all saw on our screens. And they went, what, you're crazy that was a normal platonic death bed love confession, ignore that, and it's been 5 years since all of that and I will never know peace again!!!!
