I don’t think we talk enough about how the entirety of Wicked is built on the irony of No One Mourns the Wicked. The musical exists because Glinda feels the need to tell Elphaba’s story, because she is in mourning and entirely alone in that. Glinda’s love is what creates the musical because no one mourns Elphaba except her, and that is an incredibly lonely place to be. She’s just lost two of the most important people to her, and all she’s trying to do is make someone, anyone else see how important they were.

Something that cracks me up about book of mormon fanfictions is just how mischaracterised elder mckinley always is. Like, he's always all shy and soft and stuff but then you look at the musical and this guy is like- One of the most unhinged characters on Broadway...

it's a musical that depicts the profound dichotomy between the greatest joys and the deepest tragedies that historically and presently come with being jewish. both aspects are equally important, in real life and in fiction, neither aspect should be discounted. doing so flattens the story and does a disservice to honouring the complex experiences of the generations of jews who lived in shtetls in the pale of settlement.

while it's ending is heartbreaking, it is still hopeful and that hope is what has kept the jewish people marching ever forward.

thinking of elphie sobbing as she hugs glinda for one last time, being wrecked with guilt over what she's done and about to do

everyone talks abt how glinda has regrets because we see her in nomtw and she's objectively in the moral wrong for her complicity in the wizard's regime, but elphie has just as many regrets as glinda in that moment

elphie gave up everything her fight against the wizard. not just her chance at being loved and adored by oz, but her closest relationships. her unwavering sense of justice means she's willing to sacrifice anything for the greater good, even if it means destroying her friendship with glinda

but in the end, where does that get her? nessa's dead, fiyero's "dead," and pre-kiamo ko her relationship with glinda all but collapses in on itself like a dying star. she's changed so much; she hardly recognizes herself anymore. there's a crying child in her basement she's threatened to murder. a mob is coming to fucking kill her and there's nothing she can do to stop it

and here's glinda, who despite everything still went to kiamo ko to extend one last olive branch, even after elphie left her, even after elphie stole her fiancé, even after elphie proved that she really is just as wicked as everyone thinks she is, begging elphie to let her stand beside her and clear her name

but elphie knows it's too late, and after everything that's happened, everything she's lost, she can't lose glinda anymore than she already has. elphie only breaks everything she loved and cared about, and she's already hurt glinda enough

so they're sharing one last hug and all elphie can think about is how much she loves glinda, how badly she wants to be with her, how if she only listened to her one of those times maybe things could've been different
