DINER/COLLEGE AU: Alana is in her sophomore year of college, while Zoe is taking a gap year. Alana meets Zoe at her job as a waitress at an old run down diner, and is immediately taken with her (little does she know Zoe is just as taken with her), and begins to frequent the establishment often for study sessions under the guise of loving the shitty diner coffee. (804 not-proofread words under the cut)
āHowās my favorite bookworm?ā came a familiar song-song voice. Alana looked up from her textbook to the owner and felt her face warm up at the sight of Zoeās perfect crooked smile. The waitress stood with a coffee pot in one hand and the other on her hip in the perfect ācasualā posture. āFinals?ā

Evan was different, thatās what Jared was told ever since he could remember. His mother always told him that he had to be there for Evan, that when his friend needed his help heād be there. Jared made a promise that heād always be there for him that day, no matter what.
The first time Jared saw why Evan needed him was when they were six. It was the first day of school and Evan froze in front of everyone. The second the Hanson boy had to introduce himself he got a glazed over look in his eyes. His hands trembling as he quickly looked over at Jared. His heart broke seeing his friend like thatā¦ Without thinking, Jared stood up from his desk āHIS NAME IS EVAN, HEāS SIX AND HIS FAVOURITE COLOUR IS BLUE!ā Never in his life had he seen Evan look so grateful as he did in that moment
It was only a few weeks later when Jared saw just how panicked Evan could get. He was curled up in the corner, body stuff as Evan hugged his knees. No matter what miss Willis did Evan could only respond in shallow sobs or wheezing breaths. Jared couldnāt even remember what caused him to end up in this state but he didnāt care. Instantly he kneeled down beside him, Jaredās arms wrapping around Evan protectively. āEv its okayā¦ Does your chest hurt?ā he didnāt respond but Jared did feel him nod slowly āthen umā¦ Listen to my chest! Itās not booming as much as yoursā
Jared had no idea what he was doing that day, all he knew was it worked. Evans breathing started to even out as he listens to Jaredās heart. For the rest of the day Evan clung to him. His small hand always gripping at his shirt, by the ends of the day Evan struggles to leave Jaredās side when Hedi came to pick him up.
The summer that Evan turned eight Jared had gotten into a fight. He was fun, a few bruises and grazes. Evan on the other hand freaked, he blamed himself for him getting hurt.
āi-Iām sorry Jared! I-if you didnāt defend me you wouldnāt have been hurt! Itās my fault! All my faultā¦ā his voice started to tremble as he placed his hand to his chest. His eyes watering up as his breathing started to get shorter and shorter. āy-you get hurt just for being my friend! You shouldnāt have to deal with that! Iām so so sorryā by now Evan was sobbing.
Jared chuckled lightly and gently reached out for his hands āIām okay Evan. Look at me, Iām still breathing and yapping arenāt I?ā he grins, āyour my best friend, ill always defend you, I promiseā
The smallest smile crossed Evans face. His breathing relaxed but tears still threatened to fall down his cheeks ār-really?ā he whispers, voice cracking near the end.
āI promise Evan. Iāll always be by your sideā
When the pair was ten they were put into separate classrooms. Evan panicked and Jared got mad, instantly Jared complained, he nearly stormed into the principles office. Not once did he let go of Evans sleeve. āI want to move classes!ā he yelled, glaring at the older man āyou cant put me in a different classā
āJared I understand youāre close but-ā before he could even finish Jared slammed his hands on the desk
āeither you move my class or ill just in Evans all dayā their principle was a stubborn man, even though he was determined Jared never expected him to give in so easily.
With a soft sigh, he pulls away from his desk āEvanā¦ Would you feel more comfortable in class if Jared was with you?ā
Evansā eyes widened, glancing between Jared and him before he nods āyesā¦ I-I meanā¦ I wouldnāt be so nervous if he was with me sirā his sentence trailed off into a small whisper.
Later on in the day Jared was smugly sitting beside a grateful Evan. The two had no plans on being separated anytime soon.
Jared got his first phone at thirteen, Evan goes one shortly after. This became the pairs main source of communication during school. Between classes, Jared would send small simple texts. Mostly positive message or reminders to take his medication. Sometimes if he was feeling creative heād send a joke or some dumb cat photo. Just anything Jared would think Evan would smile at.
He didnāt care if he got yelled at for texting in class, he made a promise and Jared never went back on a promise. Evan was Jaredās best friend and heād do anything for the blonde boy.
