Not so short story concept:
This takes place between the 2nd and 3rd movies.
A terror mail comes zooming in, hitting fishlegs right in the face. The message was from Mala. A large dragon had crash-landed into their island, peppered with arrows and in severe distress. They were able to aid it but I'd clearly came to them for help. Mala senses danger and asks berk for backup. Hiccup, ruffnut, tuffnut, and valka fly to Caldera Cay (home of mala and the defenders of the wing.) in less than 2 days.
Introductions and reunions are made and they finally get a good look at the new dragon. It was as if a vulture became a dragon, or was it the other way around? It was warry but once toothless approached it swiftly changed attitude to begging for help. toothless understanding makes it very clear that they are leaving NOW. Hiccup, valka, and heather follow the dragon. While astrid, ruffnut and tuffnut stay behind incase the island is attacked. With less than 2 hours of flight, a massive smoke cloud can be seen on the horizon. As they approach the island the cloud grows darker and it it clear a fire is burning. They see one or two wrecked dragon hunter ships and many more surrounding the island. sentry dragons are scattered across the beaches. A loud shriek emits from the column of smoke, distressing their guide. It tries to dive towards the sound but is immediately repelled by the smoke. Nearly being shot down it retreats to another part of the island. The riders follow it staying out of sight to preserve the element of surprise. From a cliff they watch as the hunters move thousands of dragon bones from the tombs to their ships. 2 other Bearded Wingulps (they named it on the flight there) laid in the center of the camp. One of them clearly being a titanwing. There was a spot for a third dragon, clearly showing the desperate escape.
It begins to pour, dousing the smoke and flames, but also eliminating their view. A plan its made and they split up, each taking a tether for each dragon. But the best they can do is release their wings before they're caught. Fighting off the dragon hunters they bolt for their camp with the Bearded Wingulps in tow. But for some reason the hunters don't follow. Instead all is quiet, Heather and Valka keep a lookout while hiccup tries to undo the mechanism on the dragon's snouts. It takes him till morning to finally pry the mechanism open, releasing the titan wings jaws. Heather returns from scouting and they're gone, the dragon hunters AND the sentry dragons. Not a sail in sight. But their new friends knew exactly where to find them. Motioning for the riders to follow they b-line right towards the escaping ships. Their first friend stops them from attacking, to save them from the sickening effects of it's breath attack. They expel all their stomach contents in a slurry of rotting meat and acid, so putrid that it made everyone in 100 ft pass out. The acid rapidly ate through all organic matter, aiding the Bearded wingulps in tearing the ships apart, releasing the Sentinel dragons. Who immediately flew as fast as possible back to their island. The riders unable to assist because of the smell, stayed till the dragons had their vengeance satisfied.
Back on a smoking, ravaged Vanaheim, the rain had made the destruction all the more clear. No burial mound left untouched, not a single bone was left on that island. The sentinel dragons were completely despondent. Hiccup and co decide to go to the defenders of the wing, Hoping that there might be something they can do for the sentinels. One of the wingulps has an idea and communicates it to them, indicating the riders. At this the sentinals, look at each other, look at the receding riders, and take to the air. A billow of smoke bigger and darker than before pours from the island, the riders turn around in panic, but this time it was the sentinels. One last pyre for their lost home, their fire quickly reduces the island to ashes, melting rock smooth and closing the eyes of the great beast one last time. Then with one last look they fly after the riders, following them to their new home.
This was how the graveyard shift on berk came to be. The sentinels protecting berk just as they had protected their old home. With some alterations, like becoming nocturnal, the island being heavily protected during the day.

(To be entirely honest I traced from this piece of concept art so I could get the angle n stuffs)
Curious about WHAT are dragons? Given that they have traits that would suggest an odd origin like with how may limbs and eyes they have, the fireworm queen has twelve limbs and the red death has six eyes, which the the highest count of both so the ancestor of dragons would presumably have six pairs of limbs and three pairs of eyes.
What did they evolve from? Did they climb out of the muck on earth in ancient times? Are they friggin aliens somehow?
I think they are their own WIERD thing. Think about how crazy varied dinosaurs and all their prehistoric neighbors are. Although that does bring up the question: Did the dragons evolve alongside dinosaurs, or replace them entirely? As in, there are no "dinosaurs" in the httyd universe. Just prehistoric ancestors to the dragons, wings and all.
AND NO THEY ARE NOT ALIENS. srry but It's a severe pet peeve of mine when you have an awesome fantasy world and then it's just explained away via "ALiEnZ"
As for WHAT they are, we know they are warm-blooded, covered in scales (no fur, no feathers), usually have wings, and almost always have some kind of firepower. Which varies wildly. 79% Are strict carnivores with 10 percent being omnivores 10 percent being rock eaters, and 1 percent are herbivores. Other than that, they can kinda be anything.
I also have been going back and forth on the fact that, in order to support these giant creatures, I think the world in httyd is fundamentally different. Many species of the world probably dont exist because the dragons already fill that niche. The environments would also be different, nothing crazy, but different plants, different/bigger trees, etc. The ocean would have to have a Completely different ecosystem because of all the water dragons, this including the many island sized titans. Thus leading into a spiral that personally takes out all the fun for me. You wanna give it a crack go ahead but im just gonna stick to dragon design and being a Dracozoologist
7 Howling Nights
Short story concept:
(Takes place before RTTE, after Defenders of berk)
Seven days before Snoggletog. In the center of town sat a giant tree made of log. Not a sound was made. Save for the earsplitting howling that was making sleep delayed. They took refuge in the great hall. Viking and Dragon all.
(I'm done ryming. It takes way too much brain power)
No one has been able to sleep for the last 2 days since the howling had begun. The first night, it was distant and strange. No wolf could make that sound. On the second night, it was close enough to disturb sleep. The third night was even worse, so everyone took refuge in the great hall. Its thick walls muted the sound better than their homes. Hiccup and Fishlegs are looking through Bork's papers as Toothless stares at the hall doors. Gobber, unprompted and half asleep, says he knows the origin of the noise. Ulfhendar, (Nordic werewolves) Half man, half wolf, they sail on their silent long boats and attack Viking villages. The only warning of their approach is their excited, bloodthirsty howls before the carnage. Snotlout is terrified, Astrid doesn't believe in the story, and the twins are excited. Stoick is DONE and tells Gobbler to shut it. Seeing Stoick's unusually bad mood, nothing more is said.
In the morning, the tree had been destroyed, scratched by enormous claws. The Twins "volunteered" to "fix" the tree. The day was used to blockade the steps into the great hall, cover the village in traps, steal some sleep, and do the village chores half awake. Not much was done on that front. Hiccup and Toothless scoured the isle of Berk for clues; they only found evidence of more massive claw marks halfway up an enormous tree.
The 5th night was the same, except the howling was louder, and Toothless was more upset. In the morning, they found something REALLY weird: Still alive, the sheep had been systematically made into a mound. It took 2 hours to get them all out, thankfully, unharmed. Meanwhile, the twins had spent all day and night "fixing the tree." It was now in the shape of a werewolf. Stoick is furious, but too exhausted to waste his time with them. Another day of not getting much done. Toothless and Hiccup had to return early as a snowstorm was coming. Hiccup could have sworn he had seen something on the cliff behind them, but it was gone when he looked again.
The 6th night was when the Vikings started passing out of sheer exhaustion. Everyone finally got some sleep, Till the hall was attacked. The monster was banging and scratching against the hall doors, howling louder than the storm itself. The Twins were nowhere to be seen. In the morning, giant claw marks covered the doors, tons of giant nightfury-like paw prints were found, and a strange fur-like scale was found. The barricades are destroyed and the traps broken. The twins were found sound asleep in the hollow werewolf statue. They had seen a large, hulking, furry monster with massive claws. This was the last straw. But Hiccup was able to convince them to give him one night, and that he could catch it himself. Mob is calmed.
On the 7th night, Hiccup and Toothless hide in the statue and look out for the creature. It shows up, Toothless gets really excited, collapsing the statue and taking hiccup with him. Toothless "attacks" and hiccup goes to intervene. But it turns out Toothless was playing the whole time. The giant, woolly dragon was oddly friendly. It was clearly cold and hungry. Hiccup makes friends with the new dragon and convinces it to enter the great hall. After first convincing his sleep-deprived father that the beast was only looking for warmth and shelter. By some miracle, it worked, and the dragon entered with the prompting of Toothless and a fish. It proceeds to cuddle pile with toothless, much to his chagrin. The next morning, the snowstorm had ceased. Leaving a fresh layer of snow. The rest of that day was spent repairing things, including the tree with the new dragon's help, getting used to the new dragon, and Snoggletog preparations for tomorrow. Hiccup named it the Wooly Howl. It was an exhausting, chaotic, but happy Snoggletog.
(If you couldn't tell my brain was leaking outta my ears for this one)

Loki's Gift
Short story concept:
(This takes place at the tail end/right after RTTE)
A trading ship comes to berk filled with supplies and an exhausted crew. The sailors claim that there is something cursed in the hold below. All because DARYL JUST HAD TO BRING A BANANNA WITH. Causing all sorts of trouble. Misplaced objects, Locked containers and cages open, things moving on their own, and for the last 2 days, terrible noises at night. They hadn't gotten a wink of sleep.
The vikings carefully unpacked the ship's supplies till one small room in the hold was left. loud scuttling noises could be heard on the other side. The door was slowly opened and 2 golden orbs stared back. Attached to these eyes was a small, black, dragon. With 2 enormous, curved, golden, horns. Hunched over a basket of fish. The small dragon squeaked and bolted past the vikings, jumped out of the hold and ran right into stoick.
Hiccup and fishlegs are ecstatic over the new dragon, Stoick is not. It became quickly evident that this new dragon was the devil spawn of loki himself. With the intelligence of a human child to boot. It could open any container, pick locks, escape any cage. After 2 days of hell being wreaked on the haddock house Stoick was done. The twins BEGGED to take the new dragon and hiccup was planning on letting them try. But stoick said no and voluntold fishlegs for the job. So the dragon was moved to Fishleg's house. Then astrid's, then snotlout's, and finally only the twins were left. Much to their joy as they had been BEGGING to take care of it the entire time. To everyone's surprise but hiccups, it worked. Only the twins could keep up the the insanity of the new dragon. The twins were also the first ones to figure out that the new dragon was in fact, a baby. The new baby dragon was dubbed Loki's gift and put into the sharp class.
A few days go by when things start to go wrong on berk. Machines falling apart, buildings collapsing, and worse. The twins always were at the scene with Loki's gift. So naturally it took little to no time for everyone to blame them. Even hiccup couldn't deny how suspicious it was that they were always at the scene. It took Astrid vouching for them to get everyone to back off, at least for a few days. Hiccup had a plan, because he had everyone follow the twins all day. They only saw one thing, a long black dragon tail with golden spikes. A trap is planned, but before they could enact it the twins' house collapses. A tall, pitch black, dragon stands atop the rubble. It's shimmering, golden, spikes, teeth, and claws shimmering in the moonlight. With to massive golden "devil" horns adorning its head. Barf and belch attack and a dragon fight breaks out, only being broken up after stormfly and toothless joined in. Meanwhile snotlout, hookfang, fishlegs, and meatlug are desperately trying to unearth the twins from the rubble. They are fine by the way, they encased their beds in a cage that day. Loki's gift however was not, with a badly broken leg. Hearing the pained squeak that loki's gift let out at being picked up the other dragon went into a fury. Only stopping when the baby squeaked angerly at it. An exchange of sounds and the adult, calmed, slowly approached the baby. Clearly showing no malice, Tuffnut reluctantly gives Loki's gift to the big dragon.
The towering demon instantly became a doting mother and extremely thankful once the babies health was assured. Once reunited it was clear that the Mother dragon had done all these things to take revenge on the twins for "stealing" her baby. Amends are made and the Devilish Dervish is named. Loki's gift has lived on berk ever since and adores tuffnut, to the point of occasionally kidnapping him. Much to the ire of Barf and Belch.

THE EYE OF THE DOOMFANG
Short story concept:
(Takes place after the second movie, before the third.)
Berk's fishing crew had left their usual waters, following a rare migration of fish into the frozen north. It had been 2 weeks since last terror mail was received and a rescue team was assembled: hiccup, snotlout, and fishlegs. After several days of flying they find the crew thanks to their smoking campfire. 3 men and 2 dragons were lost and the ships were obliterated. The survivors said it was jormungander itself, A giant black serpent with eyes so blue they froze you in your tracks. There was no warning signs, it just attacked. Hiccup and crew escorted the survivors back to berk. (this took a week as there were several injured survivors, human and dragon) The moment they returned to berk hiccup started planning an expedition to go back and find the serpent. Fishlegs dove into research and came up with nothing. Till eret heard the story. Before the dragon hunters came, his tribe had originated in the far north. He remembered the old legend of the doomfang, a giant serpent that was only found at the end of the world. It's breath so cold it froze the air and eyes so blue and piercing they stole your very soul. Hide so thick and smooth that nothing could pierce it, and such speed that no ship could overtake it. Or escape it. This just made hiccup want to leave even more but he had responsibilities.
After several months hiccup finally had the time to actually go. Astrid insisted to take someone with him and eret was voluntold. Him having the most experience in the frozen north. on the second night of travel eret remembered another fact about the doomfang, It was said it responsible for the auroras. It would breathe into the sky and all the souls it had consumed became the auroras. So whenever the auroras, it was the doomfang releasing the souls of the dead. Also entering the mouth of the sleeping beast would let you enter the underworld.
After arriving to the ice fields they quickly find evidence. An entire fleet of dragon hunter ships, rendered into a few planks are a torn piece of cloth. On the horizon they could see an enormous wake. Speeding off, Hiccup and eret catch up to the tip of the tail as it enters a massive, half submerged, ice cave. Unable to follow they fly up to the top of the ice sheet and take a break. Trying to figure out how find it. Eret want to go home, they've seen enough. Hiccup says they should look for other ice tunnels maybe catching it leaving one. As a snow storm suddenly hits, a distant, deafening, crack is heard. The crack of an ice sheet being spit. In the distance an aurora blasts out of the ice. They quickly mount their dragons and fly over, only to find a quickly closing crevasse. With the other option being freezing to death they dive into the crevasse as it closes behind them.
Hiccup, toothless, eret, and skull crusher find themselves in a massive semi hollowed out iceberg. They land on some solid ice and take a minute to breathe. The darkness behind them stirs. An eye the size of a typhoomerang opens. Deep and piercing as if the glacier itself was looking at them. Colors shifting and changing as it stares. All they could do is return the stare frozen in fear and awe. The dragon reared its massive head and gave them a very confused and offended look. The massive dragon flicks its toungue, takes a second to figure out it its food and attacks. (Its mouth opens like the predators and it basically has a second face/set of jaws that looks like a human skull. nice and horrifying) Toothless tackles hiccup to safety as a long tongue strikes out, and they quickly leave. Toothless roars and tried to stop the dragon, but that just lead to another offended and confused look. narrowly Dodging a bite, They escape into one of the many offshoots to the cavern. The doomfang swiftly follows as they fly through the icy maze of tunnels. Barely escaping by flying straight up after the exit. The dragon speeds out into the ocean and turns looking for its rude meal. Toothless and skull Crusher hid in the clouds. Flying away as fast as possible.
When Hiccup and crew returned to berk and told their story there was a general agreement to not go that far north again. Aside from hiccup who wanted to immediately go back. (Astrid made sure that never happened. that and the cold hiccup caught.)

FEAR CLASS
Fear class dragons are the dragons that you don't go looking for, they find you. Avoid them at all costs. What makes something a fear class dragon is active hunting of both humans and dragons. "Impossible to train" and high intelligence usually applies as well. These dragons will hunt and kill you with no provocation, you and your dragon are food. You cannot put your hand on these dragons and just become friends. This is why this class was added again, there are dragons that just want you dead.
The other dragons in this class have so many Superstitions, Legends, and horror stories associated with them they have ascended to a mythic status.
Their eggs and nesting habits are super varied.
If you want to train a fear class dragon. Don't. Your only option would be to raise them from an egg. Even then you are not guaranteed safety. The only people who truly befriend these dragons are unique cases.
STRIKE CLASS
Strike dragons are speed incarnate. Perfect precision with the agility to match their speed. These are kings of the skies and specialized to eat and take out other dragons. Powerful jaws to break bones and powerful shots to strike dragons out of the sky. Strike class dragons are also wicked smart, allowing them to outsmart their prey and hunters. Most being nocturnal they have excellent vision and hearing. When not in the sky they spend their time in mountains, cliffs, and caves. They can climb to extreme altitudes and endure insane weather. Many are able to conduct lightning in some manner or other.
Strike class dragons have small clutches, heavily protected by parents. When strike class eggs hatch a deafening crack like thunder occurs. Announcing the birth of a new king of the skies.
If you wish to train a strike class, you must be clever, intelligent, have a fish and be patient. But you will have a lifelong friend, an equal, and a brother(or sister) for life. They will take you to the farthest edge of the world and show you things that no other human will ever see.
an idea I had for a condition dragons with multiple heads could have is that they can be 'split', basically it causes them to hatch out as two separate dragons.
this tends to lead to one having organs the other doesn't. or having missing legs.
only in two-headed species this is not fatal. however it is still fatal in seashockers, as they are connected in a more unique way.
Fascinating and makes complete sense!
Some other genetic disorders that popped into my head from your ask:
Soft spines: Can affect any dragon but is detrimental to sharp class dragons. This can be caused by a severe calcium deficiency. Or by a genetic condition. The genetic condition can be deadly and can be "helped" but not cured, by an insanely high calcium diet.
Magma blockage: A rare genetic condition that leads to a deformation of a boulder class dragon's magma pipe. This usually leads to death in the wild. But with a friend and some help, it can be managed. Mostly via physically breaking up the blockage by hand or lava baths. (the heat from the lava helps melts the blockage.)
(A fire power blockage can happen to any dragon. Ice, acid, fire, etc.)
Gel blockage: This affect monstrous nightmares, cavern crashers, and other dragons with similar abilities. Gel blockage is incredibly painful and can eventually lead to infection. Due to all the scratching leaving open wounds. It can be caught early via Unusual gel color and a nasty smell. They itchiness and a complete ceasing of gel production. The dragon needs to soak in a hot spring till the problem goes away. Dragons naturally do this during nesting season to prevent this and other issues.
Wither wing: An issue when the baby is developing in the egg. This leads to the wings either being too small, deformed, or the webbing too weak for flight.
TIDAL CLASS
From giant titans to tiny minnows, the tidal class has the second most diverse collection of dragons. All unified by water, whether its fresh or Arctic, Deep or Salt. Most of these dragons are water breathers or amphibious. Often sporting more cool colors and their appendages are often closer to fins than proper dragon wings. There is also a marked lack of fire breath. Usually manipulating water in some way, either boiling or freezing. Many Tidal class Dragons dry out if they are on land for too long, leading to dehydration and eventual death.
Tidal class eggs almost always need to be under water. When they hatch they explode into a boiling water blast. Babies are able to swim on hatching.
If you plan on training a tidal class dragon, wear a swimsuit and bring fish. Also KNOW HOW TO SWIM. If you are able to train a tidal dragon you will have a wonderful fishing and exploration friend.
(there isn't as much info for this one because of how incredibly varied the class is. too many exceptions to make rules.)
