she exhales slowly as her neck is kissed ,  leaning into the touch .  “ mmm … ”  she doesn’t have an answer for a moment , distracted by rebekah’s lips ,  but she snaps back into attention after a moment .  “ nicer than trying to distract me ,  rebekah , ”  she rebukes … but she doesn’t pull away .

        rebekah’s chuckle is light over astrid’s neck,  her lips momentarily replaced by warm breath before continuing,  moving closer to astrid’s collarbone as she does.   “ is this all it takes to distract you?  i would have thought your concentration would be far better than that. ”   she teases with another chuckle before continuing her ministrations.

        perhaps if she were truly a child still she would not have let so long pass in silence.  a younger version of herself would have never lasted under such scrutiny  –  would have backed down and apologised while awaiting punishment were it given by either parent or broken into such fits of laughter whatever disagreement held would be dropped were it from a brother.

        considering her earlier hardened expression,  her sigh in response is soft,  if exasperated.   “ why is it when it’s any of our brothers  –  you included  –  it’s a grand romantic tale worthy of folklore but when i find someone i like it’s reduced to petty teenage drivel? ”   she asks,  making no move to rise from her chair.  “ i know i missed the entire second-wave of feminism while i was daggered but surely i didn’t get it so confused that any of that seems fair to you. ”

        she had to have been fearless as a young girl.  it certainly hadn’t felt like it at the time,  she had not felt brave with a blade in her hand.  reckless,  possibly.  impulsive and loyal to a fault,  certainly.  bravery implied a choice  –  a thought out action undertaken with knowledge of the possible outcome  –  each time she had stood up to their father had felt like an act of desperation,  thinking of nothing but the safety of the one who loved her most.

        now simply living tastes of death  –  so intimate already with the concept the pair might as well be lovers.  in spite of that,  or maybe because of it,  she is more afraid of death now than she had ever been as a girl.  everytime she so much as thinks of their father getting within arm’s reach she can feel his grasp around her chest.  she tries to ignore the suffocating feeling for her brother’s sake,  to find the nonchalance to match his own.  in the end it’s his belief in her that tempers some of her fears.   “ you know i would never leave you to him.  i know that.  but…  he can’t chase us forever,  can he?  not forever forever.  i don’t know what i would do if he ever won,  if he were to drag us apart… ”

by morning they will never know, nik thinks, if he gives no sign. if he does not wince at the slightest movement, nor let his breath hiss through his teeth should one of his brothers unwittingly clap him upon the back. he keeps the thought to himself, as he keeps many such thoughts to himself, loathe to ruin his sister’s sweetness with bitter pessimism. his motions are cautious as he moves to pull the coarse shirt up and over his head. this time, it’s not merely the blood dried upon his skin that he fears cracks; he can feel the tickle of fresh blood as he reopens the wound. he can imagine what his sister sees: in moonlight, the blue and black and purple upon his ribs must seem a blotch of ink left to soak into his skin, the open wound a garish adornment.

he knows what will come, knows how her ministrations must inevitably sting. there’s so little he might say, so little distraction he might grasp at, and it seems a paltry effort when he requests, ❛ tell me about your day. ❜ as if she will have any novelty to offer to captivate his attention. but at least, at least, he can focus upon the sound of her voice and not his own broken body.

        as if on instinct she goes to reach out to the wound,  stopping just shy of the skin so her fingers linger in the air  –  an almost childish hope to draw from magic she does not possess to heal him in ways that herbs and tinctures never would.  these are not the injuries of her brother,  of her sweet other half who would go without in order to see her happy,  of the brave knight who protects her against the horrors of the night and offers distractions when the agonising howls become too loud to ignore.  these are the punishments of thralls,  all violent anger in the name of submission.  rebekah ducks her head,  an attempt to hide the emotions that threaten to betray her.  you can be brave too,  rebekah.  his reassurances from what feels like a lifetime ago echo her mind  –  she can be brave for him,  she has to.

        she dips the fabric into the water and lets the excess drain,  perhaps a little slower than she has to.   “ we took henrik down by the river  –  me and sigrid. ”  a change of subject helps,  gives her something else to focus on as she presses the wet fabric against the skin to wash away the blood.  “ he spent the whole time trying to catch frogs to bring home to try and scare kol but just ended up falling in himself. ”   only once the blood is washed away  –  both fresh and dried  –  does she move on to cleaning the wound as best she can under the moonlight.   “ she thinks she’s in love,  can you believe it?  with the boy who moved in on the other side of the village.  she’s never even talked to him! ”

she takes hold of the drink as it is handed to her ,  bringing it to her lips and drinking it in one go .  the burn wakes her slightly ,  blinking a few times .  she coughs ,  leaning into rebekah’s grasp on her ,  stumbling a few steps forward as she’s ushered into rebekah’s space .  “ i’m  –  i can handle myself without backup , ”  she mutters ,  acid in her voice  –  metered by her grasp on rebekah ,  of course .

        astrid wouldn’t be the first to trail blood across the living room rug,  though rebekah does groan slightly,  mentally adding having it laundered to her tasks for the following day.   “ and yet you can barely stand,  so forgive me for questioning your current needs given the circumstances, ”   the words are said in humour,  reminiscent of an elder indulging a young child.  all the same she guides astrid to a lounge to rest before claiming the spot next to her for herself.
