Protective Jinshi this, protective jinshi that, well what about protective Maomao??
You know, the girl who regularly sticks her neck out for people facing unjustly cruel punishments and being mistreated despite her "it doesn't concern me" mantra
Whether it's Xiaolan accidentally breaking the concubine's ice, or risking punishment by taking the blame off Kyou u/Chou-u and Surei when Shenmei showed up. It even extends to people she doesn't know, like saving the "important figure" at the ritual, or always thinking of the eunuchs getting caned for even minor offenses
A lot of it goes beyond solving mysteries, catching culprits, or administering medicine. She keeps saying how her old man is too nice only to immediately follow the thought with being extra nice and self-sacrificial herself
You're telling me she won't be protective of her idiot prince as she starts piecing together more and more of how cruel the royal family was to him growing up? Sure, she's not the storm-into-battle-to-save-the-other type, no grand gestures or over-the-top declarations, but she's always giving it her all whether it's her "limited" knowledge or small and weak body keeping the ones around her safe
all because she won't be able to sleep at night and do her work properly the next morning, of course
Dang fair
The way Mao Mao is yearning more quietly for Jinshi I barely noticed it in the anime it's so obvious now that's she rejects her feelings because of her position. She is a curious cat, experiencing what her sisters warned her not to try, but she loves testing poisons on herself.
There is simply something about the way she brushes his cheek, she way she silently looks at him, the way they just click as partners and trust each other whenever they're working on a case. How she was almost unconscious and bleeding in his arms, but still looking at him as if he was the most precious flower in the world. The most obvious thing to me is how she never rejects his hugs and any form of kinship with him. We all know Mao Mao can reject people (La clan) if she wants to. She feels safe with him, she feels comfortable enough to throw a fit to taste poison, to get a little bit too excited for ingredients (climbing on his desk) and to dance around him.
Long short story she is a simp just like anybody else in the palace. But she simps with dignity and tries to know him a little better.
Was rewatching some of the last Apothecary Diaries episodes and thinking how important it is that so much of Jinshi’s pursuit of Maomao has to do with his dismissal of status. Not denial of its reality but that while they have a gap between them, there’s no reason it cannot be bridged. He never sees her status as an impediment, he barely even considers it when engaging with her, even in the beginning. During that time his consideration of her wasn’t merited, not her wishes, nor respecting her or trying to elevate her in any way. We don’t think about this in society today much and yes, the show is fiction with some stretch of reality but the setting they’re in still shows that status for others and in general does matter, Jinshi just makes the personal choice for it not to.
Instead of seeing her status as a commoner something to overcome in an effort to pursue her, he sees himself as the obstacle, being a prince and not having the ability to make choices that are truly his own without societal consequences. The burden of status is taken away from Maomao (even if she uses it as an excuse) when usually it’s the girl who’s striving to elevate herself in order to be worthy. Here it’s Jinshi who basically says with his actions and words that Maomao is already worthy in every way to be his wife, it’s him who needs to become less of who he is to meet her in a place that’s better for them both. And this isn’t about overcoming the patriarchy or Jinshi being above misogyny, it’s simply that if you see the value in others, you can be content in not needing to be special to stand next to them. For Jinshi, standing next to Maomao as her husband would seem a far better honor than anything he could be as a prince. So although Maomao deflects by putting the focus on status to distract from her own feelings and the truth of Jinshi’s, understandable to a degree given the possible repercussions, it hasn’t changed that Jinshi has never seen her or her place in life as an issue. If anything it’s part of what makes him admire and love her more.
The Apothecary Diaries is such a breath of fresh air because this is a story that genuinely seems to love women. From the sex workers of the Verdigris House to the seemingly antagonistic women of the palace (like Suirei and Loulan), the Apothecary Diaries declares that every single one of them deserves grace and dignity even if (or especially if) they come into conflict with its protagonist or societal respectability
my favourite part of the apothecary diaries is jinshi freaking out over maomao's impulsive freaky tendencies (but he's lowkey into that)
jinmao in a nutshell:
“apothecary diaries is a romance” “apothecary diaries is a court drama” wrong. jinshi’s apothecary diaries is a first love romance and maomao’s is a workplace drama. her biggest problem is being fired via execution and his is falling behind on work worrying she’s taking the wrong man home
maomao is my favorite "not like other girls" style protagonist bc for one shes a girls girl through and through. to the bone. and two she's just a weird little freak. absolute lunatic. they have the whole "omg she's actually beautiful and everyone falls for her when she's all made up" trope but the punchline is that she does not fucking want to look like that. she actively puts dirt on her face every day bc she does not want to be perceived as attractive (mostly out of fear of being used for sex work though at the same time she has the utmost respect for women who do sex work like she grew up in a brothel those are her sisters). she's Sherlock level smart and solves every mystery so fast but goes "well thats none of my business. anyway back to testing poisons on myself" she has the 2nd most powerful guy in the nation head over heels in love with her and is like "man this guy is weird around me what's his deal. I guess he's fine though because he gives me rare medicines and has no dick" fucking ICON i love her. also she once slapped someone so hard they fell on the floor. 10/10
