Okay but Mark Watney who survives for a year and a half on Mars completely alone and gets to come home because the entire world chose to put everything aside to save him watching the Hail Mary video logs when they come back to Earth and watching the world do nothing?

Mark Watney watching Ryland Grace have to grapple with the fact that he will die and there is no amount of quick thinking or human help that can save him?

Mark Watney finding out Grace didn't volunteer to go to space and was instead sent as a sacrifice so the rest of them could live and getting fucking pissed on his behalf?

Mark Watney who knows what it is to starve on a foreign planet doing the math about Grace's remaining food supply when he decides to go back to save Rocky?

Mark Watney who realistically knows that there is nothing that can be done but who keeps watching the information come out about a middle school teacher who was probably going to die alone in space and not being able to stop thinking about it?

Mark Watney who had to be asked to stop proposing rescue missions because even if they could get funded, there was very little hope that Grace would still be alive even if they got to him?

I know they're not in the same universe and I know the timelines don't line up but just go with me here.

Ryland Grace's crash-out outfits (crashoutfits)

so after the extremely important post observing Grace is wearing Ilyukhina's dress during his crash out, i feel it is my civic duty to catalog Grace's wardrobe shifts during this sequence. important science. gender science. as if there were not enough science on that with Grace already.

This sequence is non-linear, jumping back and forth, so I'll try to put them in order.

CRASHOUTFIT ONE:

PHM shirt, workout shorts, what seem to be PHM socks, and his horrible flat sole sneakers. This is all probably his own clothes or communal PHM clothes.

(I am 80% sure he's wearing fucking KEDS. So apparently Grace does not require arch support. Or comfort. Or any grip on the soles of his shoes. Maybe this is a factor in his clumsiness.)

CRASHOUTFIT TWO:

When he's going through everyone's effects, he's in longer drawstring sweatpants, his PHM polo, and what I've determined to be a hospital cloak. It's cut the same way as the medical garb and doesn't have the same pockets/fasteners you'd expect from normal clothes.

CRASHOUTFIT THREE:

Grace really likes Ilyukhina's clothes. Read into this what you will, I know I am. But he also has plastic sunglasses, and a beach hat for the WHAM! Big Tour, which. Is wild. Ilyukhina's silk robe is the clear focal point here.

I want to note that I believe Grace has another of her dresses on the floor of the lab when Rocky first shows up. Also, Grace seems to be very careful and conscientious of the silk robe; it looks like he's hand-washed it and has hung it up on his improvised airlock clothesline.

(Why is that a dress? It has a similar look and pattern repetition to the other dress Ilyukhina wore, and when Grace briefly picks it up to try cleaning the room, the weight of it is floaty like a dress would be.)

CRASHOUTFIT FOUR:

Grace loves oversized jackets and cardigans. He seems of the opinion outwear should hang down below the hips and above/around the knees. Love that. Here, as he tries to remember who tf he is, he's in a thick, warm-looking robe and the fox mask. The mask is interesting; Eva Stratt leaves him a lil fox figurine as a gift with his effects, and we know/can infer most of the things packed for Grace were from her and the team since he was drugged into oblivion. So maybe Stratt's order was "just find fox-themed stuff and bring it to me."

CRASHOUTFIT FIVE:

There it is! But oh man this makes my heart hurt. Grace seems to be dressed in as much as he can be. The dress but also two different hats, the sunglasses, his cardigan, and what looks like another jacket under the cardigan. It gives the impression he's wearing as much of the crew's clothes as he can, as if trying to hold onto them in the only way his drunk brain can.

BONUS HEARTBREAK OBSERVATION:

Grace locates the NASA jumpsuits then makes the conscious decision to dress the bodies of Yao and Ilyukhina in their own before eulogizing them. This is apparently a detail lifted from the book, where Grace does the same thing, takes the extra time.

I wonder why I never see people adding scars to Rocky or making headcanons about his scars after the Adrian incident. For example: his voice – which is arguably the most developed and identifiable feature between Eridians – having changed. I mean, there reportedly was huge amounts of damage to his pipe vents in both the book, as well as the movie, I noticed. Even though the soot removal scene I've learned exists in the book is missing in the movie, there is still a notable amount of mercury and black dust around his face holes in the movie. I love everyone's passion for Grace (& Simon's) scars, but I'd also love to see and inspire more art and ideas for Rocky's scars, as Grace is not the only one whom the mission had taken a physical toll on.

You know, something like Adrian noticing a change in Rocky's voice after their reunion, it growing quieter or hoarser.. And while everyone else might feel prone to pitying him, Adrian still sings with him and listens to him all the same, encouraging him to not lose his sociable, witty spark even if his notes might not reflect it as well anymore. Maybe their encouragement to use them even works out his "throat" so that he can at least sing louder and clearer again :'-D

#i like to think that rocky has a lot of internal scarring from his oxygen exposure #grace has no idea how bad it is and rocky certainly isn’t going to tell him #but then they get to erid and the eridian scientists are horrified by rocky’s condition and grace realizes what’s been going on with rocky #(i can’t remember if eridian echolocation can get through their carapaces or not and i can’t check rn lol)#(if not then let’s say that there’s some sort of medical instrument that reaches through instead)

yes "if he wanted to do open-heart surgery on me, i'd probably let him" is an indubitably insane thing to say unprompted about a guy you've known for a few days as well as hideously revealing in ways that you might not want to unpack right now but i think we should consider that rocky also has profound self-worth issues 46 years of isolation in the making and would think absolutely nothing of insisting (not offering) that he will donate one of his hearts to grace if he ever needs a transplant or just feels like he could use a backup and not even because he has four to spare. & he announces this with the tone of someone saying hey man how's it going over grace's morning coffee BTW.

grace and rocky play a lot of video games on the four year journey to erid. some games they play together (i think they'd play a lot of minecraft together) and others they explore on their own time.

one of the games rocky plays on his own is "off." and of course, when he's done he goes to tell grace about it.

which he does by rolling into the lab where grace is working and yelling "ROCKY JUST BEAT OFF, STATEMENT."
