hypothesis: the salt & pepper diner experiment can no longer be conducted as it stands, because everyone is now fully attuned to the opening bars of tom jones’ “what’s new pussycat?”, classically conditioned into a fight-or-flight response. however, this experience can be replicated using 21 back-to-back plays of lou bega’s 1999 hit song “mambo no. 5″, as the general response to “mambo no. 5″ being played twice in a row is not, “hey someone’s playing “mambo no. 5″ again,” but rather, “hey, lou bega’s 1999 hit song “mambo no. 5″ is a lot longer than i first thought.”
So what’s the “It’s Not Unusual” in this situation

one thing i don’t understand is the whole “anti-exclusionist” movement. do y’all realize that marginalized communities kind of have to exclude people? that’s the whole point. i’m not just talking about oppressors, like, the mentally ill community as a whole is gonna exclude neurotypicals, yeah, but it goes deeper than that.
what i’m talking about is how the schizophrenic community is gonna exclude ppl without schizophrenia. the BPD community is gonna exclude ppl without BPD. the DID/OSDD-1 community is gonna exclude ppl without DID/OSDD-1. and so on.
so yeah, ofc a specific mental illness community is gonna get mad and yell at you if you don’t have or aren’t questioning that specific mental illness yet you’re coming into those spaces, taking resources that could be used to help them, and speaking over them. it’s common sense not to do that in the first place, yet some of you guys are plastering “don’t follow if you exclude anything ever” all over your blogs without ever giving it much thought.
we’re not taking anything away from you by excluding you. YOU’RE taking things away from US if we don’t exclude you.
Zoning Out =/= Dissociation
and you shouldn’t call it that.
Dissociation is a psychological process that involves some degree of disconnection between the brain and reality. It is the brain’s way of protecting itself from experiences that are traumatic or overwhelmingly stressful. The purpose of dissociation is to take the memory or emotion that is directly associated with a trauma and try to separate it from the conscious self. It is a process which starts out as a defense mechanism to handle traumatic events, but it can be problematic when it becomes chronic or interrupts your ability to function.
There’s a mild & healthy occurrence in everyday life that can appear similar to dissociation called hypnotic absorption. Hypnotic absorption is a process in which the mind loses track of unimportant background events in order to focus on the task at hand. Common examples of hypnotic absorption include highway hypnosis and getting absorbed in a really good book. Unlike dissociation, hypnotic absorption does not occur in response to stress or trauma. It is not the same thing as dissociation.
Here’s an excerpt on hypnotic absorption from isst-d.org:
“Dissociative experiences are often confused with those of hypnosis. While the two experiences may exist together, they are not the same. For example, hypnotic absorption may be present in someone who is experiencing identity alteration, but it is not equivalent. To be hypnotically absorbed is to lose track of the background events and be completely absorbed by the foreground (e.g., highway hypnosis, where a person drives by the exit they had taken many times, only to discover they had missed the exit and are further down the road). A person capable of hypnotic absorption may be absorbed in their thoughts while maintaining control of their body (and their driving), but what they are doing is not in their awareness. Thus there is a disconnection between mind (conscious awareness) and body. This disconnection in hypnotic absorption is an example of a dissociative process, but the absorption itself is not indicative of a dissociative disorder.”
Conflating hypnotic absorption with dissociation trivializes and misconstrues what people with dissociative disorders (and other disorders that experience dissociation) face. It misinforms people on what dissociation actually is, and it makes people take us less seriously. This is why you shouldn’t call normal everyday zoning out that doesn’t effect your ability to function “dissociation.”
Okay listen up
PTSD is caused by trauma. DID is caused by trauma.
These are undisputed facts in psychology at the moment. After years of research this is what they know.
Would you claim to have PTSD but never have experienced trauma? No? That’s ridiculous, it’s caused by trauma, right?
Well so is DID. Don’t claim to have DID if you also claim to never have experienced trauma.

Since I see some people calling it “gatekeeping” when you clarify misinformation about a disorder you’re living with. Here are some sources that show that it is caused by trauma: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25670646“ Shared abnormal brain structures in DID-PTSD and PTSD-only, small hippocampal volume in DID-PTSD, more severe lifetime traumatizing events in DID-PTSD compared with PTSD-only, and negative correlations between lifetime traumatizing events and hippocampal volume suggest a trauma-related etiology for DID “https://www.researchgate.net/publication/5810713_Volume_of_discrete_brain_structures_in_complex_dissociative_disorders_Preliminary_findingshttp://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0098795 http://www.empty-memories.nl/science/Vermettenetal.pdf https://www.researchgate.net/publication/221695375_Evaluation_of_the_Evidence_for_the_Trauma_and_Fantasy_Models_of_Dissociation“ there is strong empirical support for the hypothesis that trauma causes dissociation, and that dissociation remains related to trauma history when fantasy proneness is controlled. We find little support for the hypothesis that the dissociation-trauma relationship is due to fantasy proneness or confabulated memories of trauma.” https://www.researchgate.net/publication/261217759_Is_the_Dissociative_Adult_Suggestible_A_Test_of_the_Trauma_and_Fantasy_Models_of_Dissociation “The results consistently support the Trauma Model of dissociation and fail to support the Fantasy Model of dissociation.”
Educating people about a disorder that I am living with is not gatekeeping! Telling us that we can’t educate people on a disorder we are living with because the facts hurt your feelings is ableist!
Would you call autistic people, educating everyone about what autism is and what it isn’t gatekeeping? Would you call people with bipolar who educate everyone about their disorder gatekeeping? Would you call people with OCD gatekeeping if they tell you that having OCD doesn’t mean just wanting everything to be neat? No you wouldn’t So why the fuck would you do that with survivors of chronic childhood trauma?
i know y’all don’t want to hear this but coping mechanisms aren’t inherently healthy and just because it helps you in the moment doesn’t mean it won’t hurt you in the long run
when people tell you your coping mechanism is unhealthy they aren’t trying to police you or tell you what to do, they’re pointing out that you are hurting yourself and possibly hurting others and that you should find better ways to work through your trauma to have a better outcome in life
listen if this post makes you mad, I’m sorry, but i made this as someone who is mentally ill, as someone who is an abuse victim who has and still uses unhealthy coping mechanisms because people on this website discouraged me from seeking help
it’s hard to recognize youre hurting yourself. it’s hard to break out of that. im just tired of the prominent anti-recovery rhetoric on tumblr dot com and a lot of others are too.
one thing i just don’t understand is why systems on tumblr get upset when people state known facts about did/osdd-1. more than a few times i’ve stumbled across people who say things like “don’t tell alters they’re parts of a whole!! don’t tell them their pseudomemories are pseudomemories!! stop stating these known facts about these disorders bc it’s upsetting!!”
while i agree that you shouldn’t force someone to process these things (that should be something they process and accept when they’re ready preferably with the help of a professional), i don’t understand the need to completely silence people who talk about these facts?? bc it’s misinformation to say otherwise.
i’ve seen some people say that learning this stuff prevents you from healing, which is untrue. it’s part of the healing process for systems to understand these things about themselves. once again, it shouldn’t be forced on you, it should be something that you learn and accept at your own pace. but at the same time, other people shouldn’t be forced to stop speaking about their disorder as the disorder it is.
