For 37 years it’s been up there on the flat roof of Mark Gubin’s building in the flight path of Mitchell International Airport. A sign painted in letters 6 feet tall tells people arriving here by air: “WELCOME TO CLEVELAND.”

“There’s not a real purpose for having this here except madness, which I tend to be pretty good at,” Gubin said

Above that the roof, he was having lunch one day in 1978 with a woman who worked as his assistant. Taking note of all the low-flying planes, she said it would be nice to make a sign welcoming everyone to Milwaukee. “You know what would even be better?” Gubin said.

The next thing you know, he’s out there on the black roof with a roller and white paint creating the sign that would bring more notoriety than anything else in his long career. A story about his confusing message ran in thousands of newspapers and magazines, on national TV news, “The Tonight Show,” Paul Harvey, all over.

“Well, Deidrich… We’ve been dating for a while now and since I’m more comfortable with you, I’d like to play a game.”

Will took a drag of his cigarette, dropping his sterling silver lighter into the pocket of his casual trouser before walking over to their personal bar and picking up some choice bottles, laying in on the ground of the living room floor along with a few pillows, glasses, and the ashtray right in the middle of a little circle he created.

He then pinched the pant legs up before seating himself on the floor, looking up at the other and gesturing for him to sit across from Will.

“Come sit.” Another drag. “And we’ll begin.”

“A game? With you, Will? My, someone seems adventurous this evening.” He chuckled, bringing his personal flask with him as he laid across the floor. Grabbing a pillow to lay on while he smiled playfully at the other.

Obviously anything with booze had to be fun, or at least enticing to say the least. He’s already half buzzed from the brandy on his tongue but at the sight of William smoking so casually in front of him, Deiderich couldn’t help but grin at his lover’s sexiness. He always enjoyed these quiet moments between them. Alone to do whatever they wished without being judged or humiliated. It was about the only time they could be themselves and be at peace.

He smirked a little. “Well, I suppose….”

He took a cig out from his choice pack, leaning over to Dei and placing it between his lips. He fished for his lighter and lit it… Then snatched the stick from Dei’s mouth and replaced it with his lips before putting it back where it was and taking a drag of his own.

Will sat back, and it was clear he was quite comfortable. The gel in his hair was fading, his waves showing through…the sleeves of his button-down were rolled up and a few of the buttons were undone so his chest peeked out, he was wearing a simple pair of house slippers and he sat with a knee propped up, the arm which held his cigarette draped casually over it. This is what ‘home William’ tended to look like after work hours.

“I was thinking we play a little game of truth or dare.”

He moved to pour himself a drink, figuring Dei would finish his flask before pouring his own.

“And the rule is if you refuse a dare or lie, you take a drink. The winner, that being the one who is overall less drunk, gets whatever he wants, no questions asked. Be that an item, a sexual favor, a meal or a time of absolute pampering… anything he could possibly imagine. Just one thing. How’s that?”

Deiderich let out a soft purr from the kiss, always melting at the very flavor of nicotine on Will’s lips. As usual his eyes would trail down his boyfriend like the fine piece of work he was. In Dei’s eyes, he was beautiful. Absolutely perfect in every way, especially when they were alone together.

If anything, the German wanted to taste more of those pale pair of lips his boyfriend shared when William’s suggestion broke him from his thoughts. “Alright, I’ll bite.But what kind of day did you have that you wanted to try this, hmm?”

Knowing William, hever liked to try new things. Could their relationship really come so far he was finally opening up to Dei more now? The thought brought a red tint to his otherwise pale cheeks as he took another swig from his flask.

“Who goes first then, Handsome? Also, how can we tell if the other lies? Don’t think you can weasle out of my sensual questions either, William.” He chuckled.

“It wasn’t exactly the sort of day I had, rather my interest in you. I want to take our relationship to the next level and so I want us to be able to have fun together while also learning more about each other. Is that fair?”

Will picked up his glass, putting the cigarette out and instead drinking.

“We’re just going to try our best to be honest. And I’ll answer any questions you have… As that’s the aim of the game anyway.” He chuckled in return. “I’ll start. Truth or Dare?”

And thus the German chokes on his drink before staring up at his boyfriend in disbelief. The rosy tint on his cheeks spread into a full fledged blush as he rolled on his side. “F-Fair game, er…T-Truth. Let’s not rush the fun stuff.”

He continues to take shots of his flask to force the heat on his face down. He hated blushing around William, not only did it embarrass him but it also fed his darling’s ego.

Deep down, he’s more than excited to hear he’s actually getting somewhere with stone cold William T. Spears.~

At Dei’s blush, William had the sudden realization that he had to be much, much closer. So he shifted over to sit next to the German, then brought his drink along with him. He grabbed the other’s chin and kissed him hard, the sweet, strong taste of bourbon on his lips. “You are so sexy when you blush like that…”

He leaned back, his smirk ever present on his face. He wasn’t acting like himself at all tonight. Well, not as anyone really knew him. But he was with his boyfriend and he wasn’t at the office… So he didn’t really see anything wrong with being a little flirtatious.

“Alright. Truth. When did your hate for me turn to love?” There was a fair, valid question. Nice way to start off, he’d say.

Oh no. His taste lingers on Deiderich’s tongue. The sound of his voice only furthers his deep seeded hunger as he tugs on one of Will’s shirt buttons before dropping his hand down in embarrassment.

“W-Well…” He coughs, deciding to down the last of his flask to keep his composure steady. “I-I guess…the day after our first time together? I mean, I still hated you but afterwards you acted differently from the jump. I got to see how much of a lovesick dork you could be.~” He teased, hinting at how possessive William became shortly after their secret affair in the office. “It’s really hard to tell considerin’ how much of an ass you can be. Love and hatred just kinda blended together until I couldn’t decide anymore.”

Deep down, he probably always loved William. But is pride and stubborness always got in the way of embracing what he felt. Or maaybe he’s just too far gone in love at this point to admit otherwise.

He listened intently, staring at Dei’s face, memorizing every detail. He loved this man…. He loved him with everything that he was. It was going to be hard to keep his hands off the other tonight.

He smiled a little sheepishly as Dei called him a lovesick dork. Had he really acted so possessive after just one interaction? He supposed he’d already claimed the German in that moment… Nothing else mattered since then.

“But you’re sure you love me?” He chuckled. “It’s your turn.”

“Yes, I’m sure. “ He chuckled, glad to see that cute blush he loved so dearly. “Truth or dare, handsome?” He hums, soaking in the smoke coming from William’s smokes as he blew hearts in his direction. As a committed smoker and drinker, the German had quite the talent with his mouth...

Who would have known that a drunken fling would have ended with such a loving and and secure relationship?
