1. If you feel nauseated, smell rubbing alcohol.

I love when historical figures had the same hobbies! I’ve just found out that T.E.Lawrence liked to read hardcore gay fiction, his ao3 a century ago.

I posted previously this letter that shows a super rare occasion when T.E. mentioned willing sex activity (outside his sessons). When I found this quote, I wanted to check if this writer was lgbt, so it could explain the rarity. He was.

Only today I searched what exactly he wrote. Enjoy the wild ride.

Since T.E. was deep into reading and supporting writers after war, there is no question was he a reader or not. This writer had lots of censorship problems, to the point of legal problems, so I suppose Lawrence could help him.

The appropriation of Lilith

I kinda do have a problem with Lilith in the Hazbin Hotel universe, but not exclusively the Hazbin Hotel universe.

It’s something I’ve seen a lot in pop culture in general and that’s this reinterpretation that after Lilith left Adam she went on to become  Lucifier/Satan/the devils wife. 

It’s not really the concept I have a hard time with, I love Hades and Persephone stories in general, but as I’ve mentioned before I was raised Jewish and Lilith is a Jewish demon and popular figure in Jewish folklore.

And it’s not because it’s insulting to her ‘character’, we can all have her own interpretations of how she acts. In recent years Lilith has been turned from an example of how a woman should not behave into a ‘girl power’ symbol, which I am all for!

The more in-depth reason I have a problem with this little mythology HC is because Jews don’t believe in Hell or Lucifer at all, so it comes off as a little disrespectful to me when a piece of Media marries her off to the Devil and makes her the queen of Hell, or mother of all Christian demons. While I’m DEFINATLY SURE that this ISN’T the intention, it’s like saying that we’re wrong to not believe in these things, thats just the unfortunate implication when Lilith is appropriated into Christian mythos.

I’m not a religious person, if anything I’m more culturally Jewish which is why I know more about the folklore and stories that aren’t related to the Torah, but this still really bothers me on more of a personal level and I’ve been seeing it all over the place in recent years, webcomics and TV shows mostly tbh. 

I’m sure the people who make these creative decisions don’t mean any harm, I am NOT calling anyone out on this, especially Vivziepop even if her version is what made me realize this take was so popular, but like I mentioned Hazbin is far from the only story to do this.

I’m not canceling Hazbin, or Lucifer, or any of the multiple webcomics I’ve read that adopt this idea, but I just hope that people become more aware of what they’re doing. 

Hazbin has it’s own mythology for how it’s afterlife works but it still takes place in Hell and is largely based on the Christian mythos, and people can have fun with it, I know I do! I just think we should also be able to analyze the media we consume.

Fellow Jew and I agree with this 100%. The only thing I really don’t like about the series from a setting standpoint is what annoys me about most media using Xtian stories and themes for the basis of their world-building: the careless intermixing of Jewish and Xtian figures, culture, and practices.

The US loves to say “Judeo-Xtian” as if Jews are just Xtians minus Jesus but that’s not anywhere close to the truth (both from a religious AND cultural practice).

For comparison’s sake, it’s like if you were to say “Hindu-Buddhism”. Sure these cultures have history, but any direct connections that these two groups had were severed so long ago that it’s really disrespectful to treat them like they are interchangeable.

Jewish stories are not Xtian stories, Jewish traditions are not Xtian traditions, Jewish characters are not Xtian characters.

But Viv and Spindle aren’t doing this maliciously, nor are they the only ones to do it. It’s a broad cultural problem in the West to take from Jewish tradition without really thinking about it BECAUSE it’s already so common practice for gentiles to appropriate Jewish culture. Like it’s not even a second thought for RPG developers to put fucking GOLEMS into every fantasy game, never mind have Lilith married off to the Devil.

and incase anyone accuses me of “overreacting”… yes, scientists are literally fearing censorship policies that will prevent them from informing the public about Earth’s current climate. The EPA (environmental protection agency) all of the sudden had their grant programs frozen. This means that funding for further researched is denied, redevelopment of former industrial sites, air quality monitoring and education. This gag rule also prohibits any EPA employee from talking about it. Trump also banned the EPA from giving social media updates. So yes….. any verified science affiliated social media account IS at risk of being censored under trump’s presidency. The least we can do is further spread these tweet before they get deleted. We deserve to know what’s truly going on in our world…
