My absolute darkest break-it fic idea is that the Centaurs decide they'd rather spend their remaining cap space on building out their defensive core with some draft picks and don't make Shane an offer, but neither does anyone else - either they can't afford him or they don't want to risk him "tripping" again every time the play Ottawa - and so ends Shane's career.

Because he could go down to the AHL but he'd be bored in a week, and obviously he can't go to Europe, not now that he and Ilya are married and Ilya is settled in Ottawa - so that's it. He lets Farah post a retirement statement and refuses to do any interviews about it, and once the summer is over and Ilya heads to training camp he quietly enrolls in a business degree or something online so he can work with the Irina Foundation full time. Ilya and Yuna and David are all devastated for him of course, but Shane is just numb. He's known, since the moment he opened the door in 1410, that this was a possibility. When Ilya had asked him on Boxing Day if he'd even choose him, Shane hadn't known how to explain that he already had, just as much as Ilya had, that this was the outcome he'd known was always in the cards.

So he's just numb, because if he lets himself feel it all he'll have is rage, and if there is one thing Shane knows it's that Shane Hollander doesn't get to be angry when things are unfair.
