After a long break, I visited a nearby nature reserve the day before yesterday. A female red-backed shrike was perched in a bush right next to the hiking trail. I didn't notice her at first, but then I saw it: the bird had just caught a small grass snake and impaled it on a hawthorn branch. Then came a rather disturbing spectacle: the poor snake was being eaten alive.

After a short while, the snake was moved and impaled on another branch, …

… where a bumblebee had already met its end.

And the feast continued.

In the meantime, a begging fledgling appeared and was appeased with the bumblebee.

It went on like that, but after about 15 long minutes, the snake was finally dead.

And next year, this cute little bird will likely commit similar grisly deeds.

ngl I feel like this archetype of the trans man who transitions and passes and then begins to join cis men in their misogyny and say awful things about girls without batting an eye is probably more based in hypothetical than anecdotal experience. not saying it cant happen, but all the trans men ive ever talked to are deeply disturbed by chauvanist men. theres an innate sense of "oh this guy is a creep" when talking to misogynists. and trans men may have had experiences of being too uncomfortable or afraid to speak out against cis men when theyre being misogynistic, but they dont just fall in rank because most often they know what its like to be a woman.

and its not like men are the only groups that come together to be misogynistic, either... some of the most misogynistic people ive met were girls; "pick mes" or "not a girls girl" etc. I think this idea that trans men are somehow more susceptible to becoming misogynists in order to fit in with sexist cis men is rooted in the terf belief that we are traitors who will kill all our morals to be men. but thats just not true.

the whole "insulting someone based on their appearance is bad because it could indirectly hurt people you like who share that feature" is a good start for unlearning body shaming but i do think we need to go further and remind people that even if there was some physical trait that was magically 10000% exclusive to conservatives and creeps and nobody else ever had it, we still shouldnt be insulting them based on that. because the problem with them is not their appearance its their ideology and actions. by insulting their appearance you arent just indirectly insulting others who look like that, youre literally not making the correct point. stay on topic ya know.

when i was a teenager i used to catch myself thinking "i'm really glad i'm alive right now because of all the cool personal technologies that exist" and when i did i'd think it through and reckon that well, its not like teenagers in the 70s and 80s knew they didnt have ipods or facebook or whatever. they were also happy with the tech they had. and i'd reason that in the future there would be more fun technologies that i dont know i'm missing out on right now and the future will be an even cooler time to exist

anyway i was dead fucking wrong about that last part. i hate personal technologies now. i miss having an ipod that doesnt advertise shit to me and i miss when my htc wildfire didnt harass me 45 times a day to install an ai assistant and then install it anyway when i say no and i miss when the internet wasnt 5 websites all of which i have to log into and i miss when i didnt need an app to talk to my landlord. sorry past me you were actually right about 2009
