When animals have clearly defined sex-based roles, there always seem to be individuals who cross the boundary - either straddling it or behaving almost entirely like the other sex. Dian Fossey recorded a female gorilla who, while she did have offspring (and was a damn good mother, too), otherwise took on a male role in the troop, keeping watch alongside the other males, and was treated as one. The lioness here is just one of the many other examples I’ve heard. It makes me wonder if human transgender and nonbinary identities come from something so old and deep in our code that the very roots of it, the very base foundations, may be shared with other species.
