I'm considering the idea of Rangers in urban fantasy. Not hunters, but someone whose job it is to ensure that the mystical ecosystem is stable. Like they wouldn't let a werewolf massacre a small town wholesale, but if you're going to the pyrenees to hunt a pack of werewolves who aren't bothering anybody, you are a poacher and will be shot as such.
And because of how vast the mystical world is, a ranger would have to be a functional 'do everything' professional. Ensuring local spirits are respected, monitoring sleeping dragons in the mountains to try and gauge when they'll wake up, and telling seafarers, "Look I'm sorry about your dad, but I can't let you just skin every mermaid you find in the hopes you'll someday get the one that drowned him."
Said ranger gets a reputation for being on the monsters side all the time for stopping the villagers from hunting the monsters after they took their loved ones.
"I'm sorry, but he ate from the fairies Bounty, I've told you guys not to do that. No don't go on a rampage of revenge, you'll die, upset the ecosystem, and achieve nothing"
Then an invasive monster species moves in like vampires or some shit, the villagers are terrified. And then the monster loving ranger shows up and takes them all out.
"They were invasive! Of course I took them out!"
