niara watches the girl fruitlessly search for her lost phone, only deigning to pull her own out once it seems like the device is nowhere to be found. she clears all notifications, including a missed call from andrew that she had no intention of returning, before sliding her own phone across the table. “ i’m sure it’s close by, you’d have noticed before now if it wasn’t. ”
“ thank you so much. seriously. there’s just— so much on that. i would be in so much trouble if someone went through it without me. ” she sighs in relief, punching in the number she knows by heart. despina perks up at the familiar ringtone near the door of the building, gently placing niara’s phone on the table and scampering to collect it. she returns to the table, “ thank you again— i’m really sorry to have bothered you. ” she’s already going through her calendar, brows furrowing. “ i— got my dates mixed up. of course... would you mind some company ? ”
“it’s not even that long of a story! we rescued him, i made sure nobody ran out in front of the falling tree branches, we made it back to the hotel - i didn’t even get that badly hurt! i had a cut that i had to cover up with concealer and that’s it! boring, compared to, like, olimpia croy!” she smiles, although it falters just a bit as she agrees, “kind and brave, yes. it’s weird living with someone new so soon, but we’re going to figure it out.” she takes a few seconds, “i’m fine, really! no worse than i usually am! how are you?”
“ would you look at that— selene kaimakliotis, princess of cyprus & part-time rescuer. what can’t you do ? ” anyone else may be teasing, but there’s something about the way despina adores her friends that gives way to genuineness. “ that’s good to hear. i’m glad you made it out okay, above all. i’m doing fairly well– it’s so exciting to be in tokyo. are you super busy, or do you think we could grab lunch ? ”
“ that hardly seems fair. ” her brows draw closely together at his comment, “ you’re underestimating the people when you approach things like that. don’t you agree ? surely you should have more faith in the people that you’re, quote, making choices for ? ”
niara raised her eyes to the person standing by her table in the small café, before shaking her head at the question posed. “ i think you have me confused with someone else. perhaps you’ve mixed your times up. ”
“ oh, i was supposed to meet someone here— at least, i think it was here... and today. it’s so easy to get lost in the city. let me just check my— ” despina’s brows furrow, patting for the phone in her back pocket, except— “ oh no. i think i lost my phone. do you think you could call it ? ”
“you won’t believe the time i had in argentina!” selene exclaims. she’s glad she’s finally caught up with despina, “my fiancee had to rescue aslan osmanoğlu! can you believe that!” she makes a face for a second, “she’s a much better person than me, i’d have let him walk into the forest and get hit by a falling tree branch.” she’s exaggerating, but only a bit.
“ i want to hear every detail. seriously, don’t leave anything out ! ” despina matches the other’s excitement tenfold, smile beaming at the mere presence of the familiar face. “ kind and brave— sounds like the perfect match for you, yeah ? what a lucky pair. ” she nudges selene’s shoulder with a teasing smile, “ how were you after everything that happened ? okay, i presume ? ”

“ well— being in tokyo doesn’t sound quite as fun when you put it like that. ” despina’s smile wavers, still shaken by the experience of argentina. she shakes herself out of it, offering a smile regardlessly. “ so the earth’s a little shaky here. it’s still not the worst place to be, right ? at least we’ll have safety measures already in place. ”
nike shot an amused grin at her sister. “ it’s more exciting and it means i have someone watching my back. what would i do without you ! ” stick and carrot, that was what they were. the good cop and the bad cop, nike had such plans for the two of them ! “ it all depends on how good you are at being nice to terrible people… or, well, how willing you are. ” everyone knew she was good at it.
“ of course, i’m always in your corner. don’t you forget it. ” despina muses, lips poking into a teasing pout at the other’s next words. “ you know how terrible people leave a bad taste in my mouth. but i suppose i could make the sacrifice– terrible people have it coming. who do we have out sights set on ? ”
she feigns a gasp, “ and is that the despina glücksburg?! ” mimicking her friend followed by a laugh. “ the element of surprise would have been taken away from us! ” she teases, giving her a quick hug, “ are you here for work or play? if it’s the latter… i have someone i want to introduce you to. ”
“ you know me, there’s always room for both— and i’m always more favorable towards the latter. ” despina hums in the embrace, pulling away but still keeping a hand poised on the other’s shoulder. she teases, “ is that so ? you’re trying to pass me off onto someone else so soon ? ”
“ being here together is a little exciting, isn’t it ? maybe it’ll give me the chance to reign you in more often for some quality despina time ! ” she props her elbows against the arm of the chair, leaning closer to her sister, “ talk to me. what going on in that big brain of yours ? any plans for our time here ? ” @nikelykke

before leaving for the program, she spent a lot of time getting to know the ins and outs of whatever city she found herself in. through local shops and cafes, she befriended nearly everyone who crossed her path. her status was never flaunted, but she was easily recognized. it earned her the reputation of the people’s princess. a (notably royal) girl next door.
despite being caring, despina isn't naive. she's aware of the bad parts of the world. she tackled the issues that never quite made it to the feet of bigger politicians. in her younger years, people took advantage of her generosity and optimism. she refused to let that turn her cold.
at the root of everything she does, despina craves connection. she longs to be known outside of her title. this remains the core motivation of everything that she is. it’s something that stems from watching life beyond her family’s safe walls, from the young realization that each person has their own story. that each story holds equal importance to the prosperity of her home.
