i don't understand why people keep saying oikawa was making "excuses" and gave up before he even started (referencing kita's iconic speech to the inarizaki frist years) or that he failed to go to nationals because he held on to his worthless pride

while it's true that oikawa had insecurities, it's BECAUSE he worked hard and yet couldn't quite match up to shiratorizawa did he get the insecurities in the first place.

this is a good segue into the whole "genius vs monster" aspect of things- i feel like kita's speech, as iconic as it was, wouldn't have hit hard without us seeing oikawa's story and seeing his insecurities. until then we've ALL been thinking that kageyama, atsumu, nishinoya, ushijima and even hinata are naturally geniuses/athletic because that's how it's been set up for us story wise and that's exactly why kita's speech and the subsequent contradiction of the concept of geniuses is all the more hard-hitting.

we're shown that although these people have "talent" that's not why they're monsters, that's not why they have their place on court. now we understand that talent isn't everything and we see how hard even the so called natural geniuses work, but we still know the advantage of having some kind of natural talent as they're often called "lucky". but later when we see oikawa's journey after highschool and how by working hard he surpassed any disadvantages life gave him JUST LIKE HINATA DID WITH HIS HEIGHT. we see the value of hard work in everyone sure, but we see it the most in hinata and oikawa.

tldr; hinata and oikawa are both blessed with hunger instead of talent
