a subtle hannibal detail that never fails to drive me absolutely insane is that in the final scene in naka-choko — aka the one where they are sharing a meal of what hannibal believes to be freddie lounds — you can hear mahler's fifth's adaggieto in the background. a beautiful & undoubtedly romantic piece that was allegedly written for the composer's wife with a love poem written in the margins of his notes. the slow wistful music not only helps accentuate the almost dream-like intimacy of the moment but it also helps drive the point home that what we are perceiving has long ago left the realm of the platonic
