I'm not sure when 20000 leagues under the sea was written but how accurate are descriptions of creatures down there? Is it more fantasy or science fiction?

it was written in 1869 as a part of the Magasin d’Éducation et de Récréation, a lot of Vernes works are regarded as Sci-Fi, but quite alot of the technology was reasonable at the time. the book was intended as an educative book for kids because at the time there was some stuff going on with the church and french schools, so the creator of the magazine wanted to bring some science into kids lives

Verne wasn't a scientist at all (he actually trained to be a lawyer) but all of his books were heavily researched with articles on the subjects included, which can be seen in the books as there are often heavy infodumps on certain subjects : see the discussions on the survivability of heavy ocean pressures at the beginning of the book

all the creatures described are described with their latin names and accurate descriptions, however sometimes dramaticised - see the fight with the colossal squid, and literally any time a shark is mentioned. The book is based in true and real science, but with some extra spice thrown in, i would say its "near future sci-fi" but its set 3 years before it was written so, not really?
