Animorphs AU ☝️

Cast's main morphs

Leo

battle: lion (yes, like his name. also he's the mc so he's gotta have the coolest morph. + male lions are symbols of courage and leadership)

air: crow (i just think it suits him. crows are incredibly intelligent and social! Leo's morphs all have the theme of "this animal isnt the strongest/fastest/wtv but they draw their strength from their friends" bc thats really the core of Leo's character.)

sea: bottlenose dolphin / small shark. they probably all morph to sharks or orcas for naval battle.

Adam

battle: grizzly bear (Adam's the tank of the group so all of his morphs are huge. I also think he'd like a wolf morph for traveling.)

air: bald eagle (they're a huge bird. they're also seabirds which suits Adam! i think he'd be the best at marine missions out of the whole group. also bald eagles make cute squeaky noises which i think fits Adam bc like his bite is worse than his bark.)

sea: humpback whale (or a great white shark for battle/maneuverability)

Bree

battle: i know what you're thinking BUT cheetahs are actually very fragile and not good for fighting at all, Bree wants to be fast but she also wants to be in on the action. Her main battle morph would be a ram (amazing climbers, can ram things with their skulls) or antelope/gazelle (great endurance/agility, plus they're pretty & she enjoys goring people w her horns), specifically a springbok since they're among the faster species and one of the few where females have horns suitable for fighting.

Bree would definitely be the spy of the group (and shes an estreen) so she has the widest range of morphs in general. Does morph a cheetah at some point.

air: peregrine falcon (fastest bird/animal in the world, reaching speeds of up to 240mph in a dive)

sea: swordfish (they can reach speeds of 60mph!)

Chase

battle: jaguar (ik I'm overusing big cats but LISTEN. jaguars are amazing all-terrain animals—agile like a leopard, strong like a lion, good swimmer like a tiger—and i am SICK and TIRED of them being so underrated.)

air: owl (specifically like a pygmy owl or something, cue short jokes. owls have great night AND day vision & are incredibly silent which i think suits him.)

sea: orca (social, intelligent, and vicious!)

Dani

battle: spotted hyena

air: vulture

sea: hammerhead shark (all these animals are stereotypically 'villainous' but are actually incredibly social and friendly!)

Dani would be an estreen, too, but bc of her condition (see notes at the bottom) itd be unreliable, 50/50. She can sometimes morph hybrid animals half-way, sometimes she randomly demorphs, that kind of thing. Definitely uses the DNA combination trick to her advantage even though its dangerous (when combining DNA from diff species etc).

Marcus

battle: tiger (either white or pseudo-melanistic, or both. Marcus would be very into the aesthetics of morphing & try to make all his morphs match.), polar bear (to go up against Adam), or snake

air: gyrfalcon (largest species of falcon, they have a stunning black and white coloration)

sea: orca, sperm whale, or leopard seal (depending on his needs)

Marcus' whole thing is that he's always trying to out-do the others' morphs. He acquires a tiger morph to out-do Leo & Chase's land battle morphs and a polar bear to out-do Adam's. Marcus acquires a sperm whale, which is larger and more deadly than a humpback (he acquires an orca, too, after Chase defeats him in orca morph— similar to how he copied Chase's levitation in the Vanishing after he "defeated" him in Bionic Showdown). Bree has the fastest bird morph so Marcus acquires a bigger one. And all of Marcus' favorite morphs are solitary animals.

Marcus morphs into humans the most often. Like Bree, he has a lot of different morphs because he spies a lot (he's also an estreen).

Douglas & Donald would probably have to be Andalites in this AU. Douglas was a disgraced Prince who morphed into a human permanently then had ABC&D (maybe a morphing experiment to try and make the ability genetic?), he ends up working with Krane (Visser Three) afterward. Donald ended up morphing permanently as well so he could raise AB&C after Douglas' "death". Marcus isn't Douglas' biologically but rather a kid he took in and gave the morphing technology to save his life (or at least that's the story he told Marcus, it's later revealed that Marcus' bio mom was the host body for Visser One at the time and Douglas took him in as a slight/threat against her). Marcus works for the Yeerks but isnt a Controller himself.

Dani was infected with a Yeerk as a punishment/ warning to Douglas (maybe a retaliation after Marcus?), however the Yeerk became addicted to oatmeal. Now Dani provides information to the Animorphs when she can decipher her Yeerks' ramblings, but other than that she's only useful on missions 70% of the time.

Leo is the New Guy, he was probably made into an Animorph later like David. He & Chase are the brains of the operation while Adam & Bree are the muscle. Adam & Leo are the moral backbone while Chase & Bree are more ruthless. Giselle is Visser One.

Incredibly awkward meeting ….

Leo’s danger senses are tingling and he just *knows* theres something up with this TA that Bree’s introducing him to, and she seems familiar in a sinister way and he can’t *quite* put a finger on why.

Meanwhile, Marcus is supremely annoyed bc her beef with Leo is eternal and she’s barely resisting the urge to find him alone, say something menacing to him, and then try to murder him. It’s taking all her processing power to stay cordial. Bree just wanted to introduce her TA who also happens to do super interesting philosophical research at the lab shes managed to get into.

One one hand I don't think Douglas was TOO bad to Marcus because he's not psychopathic or anything and subconsciously or not he saw Marcus as his kid, but also he's definitely the type of person to go on awful screaming tangents about how he should just rip out Marcus' circuits & stick them in a computer because he'd more useful that way etc etc then just go back to his normal cheerful cringe self an hour later

I think that unlike Chase, who wanted to get the super special rocks out of a desire for his abilities to be acknowledged as valuable on their own, she would probably go on her own to get the mission over with (possibly because the time the mission was rescheduled to coincided with a field trip, or a school dance, or some kind of "normal" activity that she'd already signed up for/planned to go to).

And I think that Douglas would try and manipulate her into taking him to the lab by promising that if she came with him, he could get rid of her bionics and they could be a normal father and daughter, wouldn't that be nice (is he lying? who knows?). I'm trying to think about what similarities he could appeal to (or think he's appealing to when those similarities don't even exist), but idk enough about Douglas's character to say.

Bree definitely would have been the best option for Douglas to manipulate into helping him.

I think the fact they are both irritated by Donald's dictacting/controlling nature would be a good start. Douglas had to have noticed this when he was spying on them for months. So maybe the idea that they both want to separate from Donald and desire to do their own things would be an appealing component.

Donald has pretty much controlled Bree's life since he got his hands on the bionic kids. The show has shown us on several occasions that she wants to be normal and Donald won't let her.

Donald has also controlled in a way Douglas before as well. The brothers started the company together, but when Donald disliked what Douglas was doing he took controll. If it's not Donalds way he won't have it.

The best way I can imagine Douglas getting into Bree's head would be promising a normal life (one possibly similar to the one he promises Marcus). He could offer her the chance to do what she's wants, not what Donald demands.

Also this may be a bit of stretch on my part but I think that Bree and Marcus have some similarities, so Douglas could have been drawn to them because that's what he's used to. Bree could have replaced Douglas' loss of Marcus.

Marcus needs to hang out with more women... their best friendships would be with women i think. Like they're definitely the kind of closeted queer guy who hangs out with the "popular girls".

Marcus is a teacher's pet so they & Janelle hang out during extracurriculars (plus befriending her made Leo angry). Marcus & Bree argue all the time but they're both competitive and ruthless and silly and they stay up all night gossping and racing and doing each other's nails. Marcus & Skylar are both nonhuman child soldiers who are trying to blend in and challenge their own sense of duty/morality. Jordan interrogates Marcus about their circuitry & whether they're going to take over the world; Dani eggs her on. Marcus & Spark are in group therapy together

LEO but like future 🥹 he is probably my favorite character in Lab Rats and I was devastated when I realized he wasn’t in Elite Force… 😭 I also genuinely thought the episode(technically 2 episodes??) when him, Taylor and Logan formed a new team was hinting at a sequel where they’d become mentors or, like, start a whole superhero team together. AND THEN THEY DIDNT EVEN SHOW UP AFTER THAT EPISODE??? 😢 THEY WORKED SO WELL TOGETHER 😭 anyways i based this off of how he looked in Elite Force but like buffer. And piercings for some reason, but u know.

Caldera History/Culture Headcanons

The lava creatures that run the clone pods (mentioned in Elite Force) are called Tagapoy [Tagaolog taga 'people' + apoy 'fire']. They landed on Caldera (sent from another planet?) many many generations ago and began to establish a clone colony: Skylar's people, the Starvrowen [Dutch vroewen 'women']

Dorenbosches are native to Caldera. They speak a language called Bloezentaal that is essentially Dutch with weirder phonemes (such as screeches, glottal stops, and clicks, some of which are only used in names). Starvroewen speak a creole usually just called ‘Calderan’ comprised of various local languages, Bloezentaal, English, and a Tagalog-based language descended from the Tagapoy. It is extremely hierarchical and metaphorical.

Calderan is skewed feminine, so “sisters”, “girls” etc. is used to refer to groups/audiences and a lot of respectful terms have feminine roots. Calderans are also very sarcastic, thus English vocabulary getting turned around and meaning its opposite.

Calderans have a three-tiered caste system based on powers given at birth (technically a 4th for Calderans with no power). Skylar was born into the highest caste and Experion into the lowest, however they were born on the same day so there’s no seniority.

Usually a planet ('assignment') is selected for a Starvrowen from birth based on caste and they learn the most popular languages from there. Earth is considered very exclusive, only the highest of the high get assigned there. Skylar used her influence so that Experion could go there too. English was easy for them to learn since Calderan has a lot of English loan words. Skylar knows Spanish and French; Experion knows Mandarin and Tamil (they were assigned to the upper-West and upper-East quadrants respectively).

Since gender isn’t a concern (officially all Starvrowen are ‘supposed’ to be female), each caste has its own third-person singular pronoun (high caste: ve/ver/vaer, mid caste: le/ler/laer, low caste: xe/xer/xiis). Affixes are added to singular pronouns based on status (determined by caste, age, and other mysterious forces).

Older/higher status: va- honorific (-va on 2nd person)

Younger/lower status: x’-

The low-status honorific is used as a “humble” personal pronoun. So when a high/mid-status person is speaking to someone of higher or equal status, they'd use the x'- prefix for themself to "humble" themself. Officially you should do that when speaking to anyone to be polite, but a lot of high status Calderans will drop it when speaking to low status Calderans.

But remember, Calderans love sarcasm, so when two low status Calderans are talking they'll commonly use the va- prefix and very formal language (like 'oooh look at us we're sooo important, they should all bow down to us! /s'). And obviously when Calderans are close, especially when they're already of a similar status, they'll drop the honorifics altogether.

Also messy doodle of marcus playing the guitar. Anyways i think that if marcus can regenerate from being evaporated by daniels energy blast he can regenerate from being shot by douglas’s gun thing. So he regenerates and he leaves (at least for now) because he chooses self preservation over revenge. (Hes gotten killed by the davenports 3 times 😭 atp). Might make a mini comic about him leaving when i have the time!

He has some android like features that he covers up in public to blend in but keeps in view when hes by himself (and eventually when he finds ppl he trusts [he might never], he may let the metal show around them too). Also i just like drawing the metal features lol.

I think that he mostly just wanders and hitch hikes and travels as far as he can and picks up and discards many hobbies and commits many petty crimes. He might come across some of the bionic kids from the army and convince them to quit and prioritize themselves and go on a self discovery journey at some point. He doesnt even cross paths with any davenports until wayyyyyyy in the future.

Bree and Marcus parallels with “The Christmas Kids”!

Thoughts/explanation under the cut!

I chose the name of aurora as bree's college alias because it means new dawn, and that felt fitting, considering this is all about her leaving her past behind for a fresh start. It also apparently has the connotation of freedom? plus! it matches with marcus's chosen name in that they both start with "aur".

the second panel is supposed to represent that they both changed their minds and chose a different path - (mostly) civilian life. also very minor bree suit redesign because I dislike her canon s2 suit lol

third panel is just the lab. I couldn't find any references of pre-destruction lab so I drew the new one, but the implication for bree is that she's fully leaving the basement she was confined to for thr first 14/15 years of her life. even when she goes back home, she doesnt go back to the lab unless *absolutely* necessary. I wouldve drawn Douglas's lair too, but I was unfortunately too lazy

last panel is both bree/aurora and marcus/Aurelia knowing about the other's past (bree only suspects, but marcus *knows*), as well as the ghosts of their past selves still haunting them. both of them wanted a fresh start but haven't yet reached closure!

Another post canon marcus sketch! In concert in a can, theres a throwaway line where marcus wants to discuss his ideas with mr davenport, and while he *does* get immediately shut down because mr davenport is narcissistic, that scene made me think that his superintelligence might manifest as a passion for research.

Anyways they fudge their records (this identity is called aurelia, is 24, and uses she/they pronouns), apply to a PhD program at a public university in the east coast, and hack admission records so that theyre accepted. They use the shaoeshiftimg technology giselle gave the, to appear older, slightly more fem, and ti hide android/robotic features.

The research is great, and they surprisingly dont hate the people they work with. Unfortunately, theyve also been roped into TA-ing for a lower division GE and so have to deal with annoying freshmen on a regular basis and grade work. Idk if chat gpt exists in this universe but if it does theyre super disdainful about it (wayyyy less advanced AI) and are also scarily good at identifying it. Theyre a very harsh grader and their office hours are useless because they cant really teach, but theyre kind of hot and have really nice fashion, so a lot of frehsmen have a crush. (Theyd be horrified to learn marcus is actually 16 …)

This part is kimd of AU and might or might not happen, but marcus ended up choosing the college that bree attends, and ends up TA-ing for a class she’s in and desperately tries to avoid her. Theyre really annoyed about it because they dint really wanna leave until their research is finished but also bree being here *really* complicates things. Might draw them interacting next ….

I like to hc that adam takes up gardening, and this is him with Naomi offering her a flower that he grew. I think that he absolutely dotes on her and grows all her favorite flowers. “Settling down” for him is spending time with family without worrying about losing their lives or having to constantly be on guard because a mission might happen at any time.

Bree marrying a woman!!!! I dont have a particular ship for bree, so I just drew her wife to have features that contrast from Bree a bit. I interpreted “marry rich” just as marrying in general and finding a life outside of bionics and missions.

This is one of my favorite lines!!!! They’re always having to worry about their missions and whether theyll survive and whether their loved ones will survive and i want them to have the opportunity to just be scared of something as silly and simple as spiders.

Theyre just watching a horror movie! I ignored the cancer part of this line lol.

Marcus thinking of his code as his soul. I think its canon that his main components are in his chest? So hes also holding onto his motherboard and main processing center.

Hes scared of someone(mostly douglas) messing with his code! He looks mostly happy but its also unsettling, and the green is supposed to mimic the triton app. Because while it’s not mind control in the same way, it’s similarly a very gross invasion of his autonomy. Hes also wearing much more similar clothing to his s2 self with the android parts hidden because this isn’t *really* him, just who douglas thinks he would be if he was good and a member of the family.
