“five thousand, two thousand, oh i do have a couple of ten thousand notes left,” she muses happily as she counted the remaining korean won notes left in her wallet after having paid ilho for the fishes she planned on cooking later tonight. tilting her head as her favourite fish seller asked her the question, she takes a second or two to listen to the song that was playing on the radio before nodding enthusiastically.

“i have! it’s popped up on my playlist a couple of times and ever since then i’ve had it on repeat as well,” yiseul replies warmly, taking out her phone to show the other as she unlocked her screen and opened her music app. “not only do you sell good fish at good prices, you also have good taste in music as well!” she says as she held the phone closer to ilho. “do you have any other songs you’d recommend?”  

her eyes lit up with mischief as she continued, “since we have similar music taste, what about a discount for your beloved regular customer here?” the former athlete laughed as she retracted her joke, shaking her hand to indicate she had been merely joking.

too absorbed in scanning the latest menu of the day section hung above the counter, she had nearly missed the barista’s comment. mentally making a note to jot down the possible desserts of the day she could order next time she visited the cafe, she shifted her bag strap as she pondered on how to reply to the question that the other had just posed, her eyes taking a good look at the barista who, based on his nametag, was called minkwan. something told her that she’d seen the other before, the round face looking somewhat familiar to her eyes. 

“funny you say that, i feel like i’ve seen you before as well,” yiseul replied good naturedly with a curious tone in her voice. “i wish i was a model but i don’t have the height for it. you most probably saw me in one of the interviews i gave about my table tennis career,” she said with a sheepish smile. “what about you? have you always been making drinks here or are you the one that’s secretly a model who appears in fashion spreads once in a while?” 

tilting her head as she tried to figure out where she’s seen minkwan around before, she purses her lips while wracking her brain from where was it exactly that she heard his name previously. “this is a bit random but do you happen to be involved in sports? i feel like that’s why you seem like someone i would recognise,” yiseul asked politely, her wide eyes eager for an answer to prove her hypothesis.

yiseul would claim that she’d been minding her own business when the younger female had entered the subway carriage and took a seat next to her, but she couldn’t stop herself from subtly glancing  at her seatmate’s phone screen as the other took out her phone and started humming to the song she was currently listening to.

the song titles that littered the screen were mostly of upbeat and pop-ish songs, something that matched the other’s appearance. yiseul noted how the younger had the fresh girl-next-door look that was favoured in south korea, internally wondering how is it that some people simply win the genetic lottery while yiseul herself is stuck with a plain face.

she blinks when her seatmate turns to her and offers her an earbud, surprised by the friendliness of such an act. yiseul peers over politely to read the song title and scrunches her nose, wondering if she’s listened to the song properly before. “the title looks very familiar, but i can’t recall whether i’ve given it a good listen,” the former athlete replies, putting the earbud in her ear, her usual curious deer in the headlight look intensifying as she pays attention to the melody.

“oh, i recognise the chorus. one of the girls i coach keeps on singing it,” she says out loud, her tone of one recognition. “i keep on forgetting to ask her what the name of the song was but now i know. thanks for helping me solve a mystery,” yiseul grins at the other.

she knew she had a packed schedule for the day - a meeting with her advisor at 9 in the morning, followed by a coaching session all the way across seoul at 2pm and now she’s got to submit her meeting minutes for the meeting with her advisor by midnight. yiseul regrets not taking her car as her mode of transport today, it would have made it much easier for her to transport her training equipment along with her research stuff.

having getting caught up in her own thoughts as she made her way to the dog cafe, she nearly didn’t hear siwon’s offer. with a grateful beaming smile on her face, she nods thankfully, “have i ever told you how much of a lifesaver you are, siwon-ah?”

she hands him her gymbag where the shape of her table tennis rackets protruded through the zips as they entered the cafe, the familiar scent of freshly brewed coffee hitting her nose. “oh yeah, you can try out one of my rackets later, if you want. i remember how you eyed the rackets last time you came to watch me play,” the former athlete nudged jokingly at the younger, a fond smile playing on her lips. 

“you know, my juniors were asking me why you looked like you were ready to attack me for my racket,” yiseul said, trying her best not to crack up at the memory of her younger table tennis juniors’ puzzled face. they had been lovestruck by siwon’s cheerful personality coupled with his good looks until they saw him in his full table tennis fan mode. “they said you still looked very handsome even when scary. seems like someone has fans.”

holy moly, i finally have time to introduce my bb jang yiseul! been waiting patiently to officially join this rp so thank you so much for the warm welcome y'all, will get to replying the messages as soon as i post this. anw i've been away from the rp community for 2 years already so don't mind if my writing is rusty. i just graduated from university but currently in the midst of applying for postgraduate studies (aka i'm as stressed out as yiseul and her phd research) so please bear with my slow replies!

profile and brief history 

jang yiseul is a phd candidate at sunggyunkwan university researching about sport diplomacy and its impact on peace (mostly focused on north-south korean relations)

this bb retired from competitive table tennis three years ago when sunggyunkwan accepted her phd application

another reason why she retired was because all of her injuries was catching up to her so you’ll catch her at the hospital or physiotherapy centres quite often

while she was active in table tennis as a national player, she was one of the star players so your muse might recognise her from the many ads she featured in

that being said, her popularity waned at the end of her career as info about her troubled family background leaked out

her parents are divorced for many reasons - her dad is a former north korean spy turned defector, her mum is a disowned daughter of a upper middle class civil servant family who aligned with the japanese during the japanese occupation era so yah family dinners used to be quite political and on the brink of starting world war three

yiseul tries to embrace this insane kdrama level of family background by researching more about south korea and east asian politics

table tennis was her coping mechanism during her childhood - she distracted herself from all the fambam drama by playing table tennis

though she could have become the next taekwondo star but that’s another story for a soju drinking night

she’s super polite and easygoing when not stressed, just don’t be fazed by her bare poker deer in the headlights face
