Byler needs to happen because there are so many people who think they're not homophobes but really at the end of the day are comfortable with someone saying "I'm gay" but uncomfortable with a boy saying "I want to kiss a boy" and that's a big problem.

The coming out scene wasn't Will talking about Mike, it was Henry talking about Patty. Henry's memories are bleeding into Will's. That's why Will says he had a crush. When they spent 5 episodes telling us that Will is still very much in love with Mike.

Patty and Henry rode bikes together to get milkshakes at Melvald's, not Will and Mike, because Melvald's was a diner only in the 50s.
