Father versus Son

I do really love the tragic courtly love dynamic between Obi-Wan and Satine, and it’s an excellent foil to Anakin and Padmé, but mostly in how it illustrates the fundamental differences between Anakin and Obi-Wan as people (and to a lesser extent Padmé and Satine).

I think it’s important to recognize first of all that Anakin and Padmé tried to compartmentalize their feelings the way Obi-Wan and Satine do. That was literally their resolution after the fireplace scene, and it’s Padmé who ends up rejecting that arrangement (“saying the word,” so to speak). All four of them have experience in setting aside their own feelings for the sake of duty, but Obi-Wan and Satine, being more reserved and analytically-minded, seem to be able to find at least some amount of peace with their choice between love and duty, while Anakin and Padmé are at their core passionate and emotional beings, which makes finding peace in either choice impossible for them. Of course, both of their stories end tragically, but Obi-Wan and Satine’s tragedy comes from what they deny themselves, while Anakin and Padmé’s comes from what the world denied them. Both couples made the only choice they ever would, given who they were as people, and I think that’s tragically beautiful.

(Also the fact that Obi-Wan doesn’t directly say “I love you” back to Satine when she confesses, but instead “had you said the word, I would have left the Jedi Order” is such perfect writing. This is the man who couldn’t tell his brother he loved him until it was far too late. His inability to express his feelings is a recurring character flaw!)

All the folks in the comments saying this is a spaghetti-stick-to-the-wall lore thing aren’t taking into account all the herbivore/prey animals that grow spikes and claws to ward off predators. Think porcupines, iguanas, and pufferfish. Not to mention herbivores with horns/antlers like bovines and deer. And the bright colors of zabrak’s skin with the tattoos reminds me quite a lot of aposematism. In conclusion: zabrak are likely an herbivorous or omnivorous prey species who look like that to scare off the many large and deadly predators native to their homeworld

And isn’t that more poetic, in the context of Maul’s story? This man isn’t the predator. He’s a prey animal forced into violence in order to survive, and he’s intensely jealous of the predators whom he worships. They were made for this. He wants to be made for this too, but he is not. He hates them. Oh how Maul despises them. He will never truly be one of them.

Maul has prey animal fear, and that makes him dangerous.
