Happy birthday to the one and only, Blane Rekner! I think by now everyone knows I have a soft spot for them—I don't try to deny it. Blane was one of the first characters I created for When Twilight Strikes, and for that, they will forever hold a special place in my heart.
To celebrate the occasion, I've decided to give you a little glimpse inside their mind and provide their thoughts on the Hunter and each of the ROs. And if you want more? Well, their romance route will give you an even better understanding of who they are <3
Blane's Thoughts on...
[A]: Blane doesn't like [A], per se, but they don't exactly hate them as much as they let on. Sure, [A] annoys the shit out of them and riles them up like no one else does, but Blane knows that half of their arguments start because they provoke [A]. In another life, Blane thinks they might get along. In another life, if Blane wasn't so insecure and didn't wallow in their own pain, they might've admitted earlier that they admire [A] and their positive attitude. But considering where we're currently at in the story, that's not happening anytime soon.
N: Blane's best friend, through and through. To this day, they don't know what the other saw in them, but they're grateful that N gave them a chance. N was patient and kind and never asked for more than what Blane could offer, which was the opposite of what had been expected of them in the past. It scared them. Scared them, but also gave them hope. As a result, Blane will always be grateful for their friendship with N (and can only pray it goes both ways).
K: While their personalities occasionally clash, Blane finds K... intriguing, among other things. Occasionally, they'll bond over their introverted behaviours and find themselves at the edge of parties together, to which they end up having some pretty interesting conversations. Blane doesn't quite understand K's pain, and K doesn't completely understand Blane's, but they understand each other emotionally more than most people, which leads to this strange bond. If given the chance, Blane would like to get to know K a little more, but they're the last person to push for that.
Rylan: As someone who is also hiding a lot of secrets, Blane can tell that Rylan has a few things they keep close to their chest. When the mask drops and Rylan gives a glimpse of who they are beneath the bravado, Blane finds it admirable. They want to know more, want to talk to the person who isn't laughing and making ill-timed jokes for once. Blane finds Rylan intriguing. And while they often roll their eyes at their behaviour, Blane truly doesn't mind that Rylan tagged along on the journey to find Caine.
The Hunter: Someone Blane wants to be closer to, but can't. Someone Blane wants to stop hurting, but keeps doing so anyway. Words cannot begin to describe how complicated Blane's feelings are for the Hunter. They know that their hatred of them is wrong and that they're only causing them both pain, but for reasons you'll find out later, they can't stop. And for that, Blane hates themself more than they could ever hate the Hunter.
It's here! (Do you like the new cover??) After nine months, the chapter has finally come. This one took me a long time. I outlined and re-outlined and outline some more. There's something Sisyphean about writing an IF and there were long stretches where it felt like the end was never coming.
This was definitely a set-up chapter aka it sets up a lot for chapter 5 and beyond when it comes to the routes and upcoming dramaaaa so I'm excited to see everyone's theories and thoughts on all of the breadcrumbs I drop in this one. I'm really thankful that I worked on Chapter 5 alongside of Chapter 4 because that means Chapter 5 won't take so long to come out! I'm excited for that yippeee!
One thing to note: I usually leave the lyric options to the end but I couldn't come up with them this chapter. At all. Like for over a month I just couldn't. I am cashing in my "this is a wip" card and forcing a type-in. (It'll be fixed in chapter 5).
A change to note: Attached/Detached are no longer change options but they are now variables and in the stat page. As well as being negative/positive. It didn't make much sense to have the second one because jaded/ambitious does that job and I wanted the attached/detached markers to fluctuate for future story reasons.

I wanted to focus on the celebrity/famous/botb/band part of it because those stats feel meaningful and important compared to generic personality stats. Some have been taken out but not completely. They are still being measured in the background for flavor text. Stats like Loved and Born Star don't change as often as they are dependent on the changes of invisible stats. They will make more sense in the future chapters !
