@didntyouhear
Well, have I got a gem for you guys!
I sent in an ask the other day about the footage used in Gigantic of TMBG performing at “8BC Nights” in 1986, and now I’ve actually found the whole thing!!
8 minutes and 30 seconds of shoddy camerawork and echoey audio, recorded around midnight on February 13th 1986, 9 months before the release of the Pink album. In glamorous 1080p and 60fps! This may not be the earliest recording of TMBG live, however it seems to be the earliest video footage that exists. Footage of the night’s opener, Frieda, can be found in the video’s description.
Enjoy!!

Thanks to Peter Gritsch and Jon Uleis for video conversion/transcoding help.
I’m sharing this to remind myself to watch it later. Hot damn! I am so excited!
i’ll never get over the fact that there’s a movie called “snakes on a plane” and in that movie there’s a line that is, verbatim, “ive had it with these motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking plane”.
that is absolutely bonkers. that’s ridiculous. that’s like making a movie called “gators in the sewer” and having someone in the movie say “im getting really sick and tired of these fucking gators in the sewer”
the funny part is that the alternate title was something mundane like “flight 93″ and samuel l. jackson made the director change it back to “snakes on a plane” bc he said it was the only reason he auditioned
oh my god, the youth have forgotten that there was a huge viral phenomenon when this movie was being filmed, where the internet got wind of the working title snakes on a plane, and a) demanded that title be made official, b) CAME UP WITH the line about these motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking plane, and c) GOT THE LINE INCLUDED IN THE ACTUAL MOVIE
You forgot the part where three up and coming bands in the emo scene collaborated to write a song called Snakes On a Plane and filmed a music video of themselves smuggling snakes onto a plane, and it practically launched all of their careers.
If you think for one second of my worthless life I have forgotten “Bring It (Snakes on a Plane)” released by Cobra Starship (2006) then you can think the fuck again
Also there was a contest for artists to submit songs to be featured in the film and the electro power pop band Captain Ahab wrote a nu-metal banger called “snakes on the brain” and won. They then reinvented themselves for a year or so as a Nu-Metal group and made some of the best music from their career.
And the film had this promo they did where you could call a phone number and hire someone that sounds like Samuel L. Jackson (or maybe it was actually him I don’t really know?) to call a friend and leave a personalized message and demand they go see snakes on a plane. I got at least 4 phone calls from friends, all of them different, all of them amazing and all of them ended with something along the lines of “AND GO SEE SNAKES ON PLANE IN THEATERS MOTHERFUCKER!!!” It was amazing.
I am playing a show in Griffith Park today. More information can be found here
Next show is less than 2 weeks away.
Here is a recent photo of me. I am playing at the trunk Space tonight (June 6th) with lonesome leash from New Orleans. I am very excited and hope people show.
I’m playing a show tomorrow
I have a new album. It’s out now and I am having an album release show this Saturday.
So many other groups' music veers towards misogyny or objectification of women, however I can't think of a single TMBG song that is anything but positive towards women. Is that a conscious decision? Why do you think that is?
JF: We appreciate you making the point. It was definitely something we were aware of from our earliest days, just recoiling from the often over-the-top sexism is songs.
Yes!
I have a new piece of installation art going up for just one day on Friday May 4th, at the Clarke Estate in Santa Fe Springs as part of their annual SFS ArtFest.
Details at the link in the photo. I’ll just add that I’m looking forward to this a lot. I’m anxious to be working with the Dreamboat Research Project again.
A mood if I ever saw one
I am bummed I missed The Aquabats this last weekend.

What Made Nirvana Famous (Industry Deconstruction)
Anonymous asked exposingcourtneylove a question How did a band like Nirvana make it in such a PR-dominated industry? It’s because of Dave and Krist’s fakeness, right?
It wasn’t was just one thing really. It was multiple elements - +disclaimer - if you’re lurking and have never seen us before, please see our top topics/faq for context here of how he was used up and spat out by his band, his wife, management, and everyone around him -
Timing. Nirvana was debuting in an oversaturated industry that was due for another musical eclipse. Kurt’s unique talents and ability to breach the gap between rock, punk, and mainstream pop distinguished them as a band.
Natural X-Factor / Charisma / Brand Identity. This is something people are hired to try to create but often fail to do because you can’t fake the real thing - As a reluctant frontman, Kurt naturally had the ability to get people’s attention because he has such an interesting, understated personality. He was sincere and that’s like lucky golden paint for anyone that’s trying to be an artist. It doesn’t happen that often, but when an artist comes a long who’s actually invested in their craft, amazing things can happen. That person, out the gate, gives off a vibe that distinguishes them from everyone else. They’re like a breath of fresh air and with the right amount of work and people around them, it can catapult them to popularity very easily. It will just take some time. (Continued)
This is a great read and a lot of the points here are things I’ve brought up in multiple discussions I’ve had with friends and peers about nirvana and success in general. It’s nice to see them written so eloquently.
