I’m finding myself reflecting all day on Lara Elhard's passing. I didn’t know she was sick and I didn’t know she had passed on July 25th until this morning when I saw Jen U's Facebook status updates. I was extremely sad to hear this.
It’s amazing how the people you knew in your early years have such a permanent bond with you for the rest of your life, even if you haven’t stayed in touch with or seen the person in many years.
The people you know in grade school through high school is especially crazy close. Few bonds seem more fundamentally strong than the relationship that forms when growing up with, experiencing with, and learning with, the people you live amongst the most in your very early years.
I think about that a lot for my own kids and how the closeness that they feel now with their friends, and the memories that they’re forming now, will be unlike any other relationships or memories that they have in the rest of their life.
I went to prom with Lara my senior year. We weren’t boyfriend and girlfriend, we went as friends mostly. She was a beautiful person inside and out and I remember liking her a lot. I remember how neither of us were dating anybody and how it worked out just perfectly that we should go together.
She was a very warm, compassionate, loving, fun, smart, spiritual person and I will never forget her.
The last time I can recall seeing her was right around the time I got married and before I had kids, I think. So must have been around 1996 or so. We happened upon each other at Dayton’s downtown Minneapolis. It had been awhile, yet we still recognized each other (although it was kinda in that awkward/not-sure “is it really him/her?” way).
As I went back and looked at old prom pictures and yearbooks today, I was especially touched by what she wrote in both my yearbook and on the back of her senior picture. Everything that I’m remembering about her now and reading about her on Facebook is very true. And I am getting inspiration now even today by what she wrote to me in 1986.
It’s days and times like these where you take stock in your own life and become reminded how precious our time is here and how things can change overnight, or even in a minute or a second.
I’m thankful for having known her and how she helped influence me during the time that we really knew each other. And I’m thankful to her now for what she’s bringing to me in the way of reflection and fond memories today.
Your spirit lives on, Lara. Thank you.
