I dont know how deep you are into dnd, but what dnd classes would you assigne to all the adventure kids? Like for me Hikari would be a cleric, Mimi and Takeru a bard, Koushiro a wizard but i am kinda stomped by the rest. Druid for Jyou? Fighter or Paladin for Taichi and Daisuke or something else exactly? I would love to hear your thoughts!
Honestly speaking, I am not THAT much into D'n'D, but am ALWAYS interested in categorizing the Chosen Children one way or another. :D When it comes to D'n'D, my main exposure points were basically Stranger Things (and my personal comparison between Taichi&Koushirou and Mike&Will being Paladin&Sorcerer respectively) and the super awesome "The Amazing Digital Circus cast playing D'n'D" stream. And while I have compared the TADC characters with the Chosen Children before... I am still no expert on the classes.
Soooooo I consulted someone who's a little bit more into the intricacies: @jamesthedigidestined cooked up a pretty solid line-up that, after listening and considering it more closely, I can absolutely stand behind. So thaaaaank you again, for the input!!! <3
I'm going to try to summarize it as much as I can. First things first - there appear to be 12 different classes, which, at first glance, couldn't have turned out any better, right? I really believe James managed to distribute all roles pretty accurately - of course there are some outliers that don't fit 100%, whereas others immediately align. He also thought about giving the 02 kids multi-classes that correspond to their Adventure heirs. Which in sum, could have been valid. But I also agree with him that this would just defeat the purpose too much - it wouldn't reflect their characters too well.
So, let's get this going:
Taichi - Fighter: "Masters of combat, fighters are skilled with a variety of weapons and armor." While I did make him a Paladin initially to mirror Mike from Stranger Things, I also don't think there is a more perfect choice here. Not only did I immediately have to think of WarGreymon handling weapons (such as the Dramon Claws and the Greysword, as well as the Shield of Courage!), but in general, I feel like he fits the archetype: A protector, warrior of justice, who learned his art, mastered to handle various weapons... Yeah, that's my protagonist, y'all.
Yamato - Rogue: "A scoundrel who uses stealth and trickery to overcome obstacles." This was a bit of a tough one because my brain initially went to the Bard because of the music element... But James brought up a very compelling argument: "He be sneaky spy in Kizuna" and that immediately sold it to me. Especially if you do a little role-reversal with him - like you assume he's a trickster, but actually turns out to be too soft-hearted for it.
Sora - Sorcerer: "A spellcaster who draws on inherent magic from a gift or bloodline." At first, I couldn't fully make sense of it either - but the idea that Sora has to accept the powers inside of her, thus her inherent sense of love... Just felt beautifully fitting to me. (It can also function as a bit of a role reversal as well - since she may have to overcome her bloodline to find her own way.) James also explained that fireballs are THE most famous cast out there, so... Birdramon do fireball, pls.
Koushirou - Wizard: "A scholarly magic-user capable of manipulating the structures of reality." Again, I made him a Sorcerer in the Stranger Things comparison, but... Come on. This one is almost too on the nose for him, he's basically studying the science of magic and quite literally manipulates things in the Digital (and real) world. He IS a wizard.
Mimi - Druid: "A wielder of nature magic who can shapeshift into animals." As mentioned with Yamato, the musical element may make it appear logical to make her a Bard - especially because she WOULD be capable of casting "vicious mockery" to cause emotional damage with EASE... But I also like James' take that puts her closer to Palmon's evolution line and Mimi's connection to freedom and nature.
Jyou - Ranger: "A warrior who uses martial prowess and nature magic to combat threats." This one was also rather tricky and James was contemplating making him a Monk instead; granted, neither Jyou nor Gomamon are particularly known for martial arts. However, James explained to me that this class is linked with the idea of knowledge gathering, understanding and the protection of nature and... I feel like that sounds a lot like our reliable doctor.
Takeru - Paladin: "A holy warrior bound by a sacred oath." I mean, I heard the word "holy" and was already sold. Again, him being a little troll who could easily cast "vicious mockery" as a Bard makes perfect sense - but how could I resist the idea of him being a holy warrior promising to fight for his values and beliefs, who has basically sworn to fight the power of Darkness as if it were an "oath"? I mean, COME ON.
Hikari - Cleric: "A priestly champion who wields divine magic." ... Or should we say, "a priestly Perfect"? Okay, all jokes aside, I guess this one is pretty much self-explanatory, she is a messenger of God, she is a healer... What else is there to say? And thus, Takari turned into Byler, amazing.
Daisuke - Barbarian: "A fierce warrior who can enter a battle rage." James kinda explained this on by comparing him to the Fighter, who learned, is experienced and honed his craft, whereas the Barbarian... Throwing himself into the heat of combat and we both feel that's how he rushes into a lot of instances in 02, which makes this very fitting.
Miyako - Bard: "A master of song, speech, and magic who inspires allies." And THERE we have the Bard - she may not be musically inclined like Yamato and Mimi, but she may be the one who is the absolute BEST at casting vicious mockery, probably better than Takeru and Mimi combined. She is also talkative and persuasive after all! (Plus, on a less serious note, the Bard has a reputation of crushing on others and I guess, Miyako proves to be the most pansexual member of the Chosen Children overall. XD)
Iori - Monk: "A master of martial arts, harnessing the energy of ki." Reading up some descriptions here, "wherever they were based, monks rigorously trained their bodies and minds towards perfection" and, altogether with him trying to master the art of kendo, it makes sense that Iori learns to deal with his sense of morality, looking for the best possible solution. It's a hard one. (I guess he could actually switch classes with Jyou, which in turn, would absolutely not be surprising!)
Ken - Warlock: "A wielder of magic that is derived from a bargain with an extraplanar entity." This is basically the manifestation of the idea that powers of evil (Myotismon/Vamdemon through the Dark Ocean/Dark Seed and, by extension Oikawa) gifted Ken immense powers (Kaiser arc). It doesn't exclusively have to be a bargain of evil... But for the time being, it fits Ken way too well.
