I WILL BE THE BLACK CANARY FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE.
i'm not judging, just saying.
it feels like judgment. it feels like dinah’s having to defend herself in her own apartment, when that’s not the case. and they’ve done this song and dance before too— with the fridge, and the air conditioning unit in her bedroom, and the couch leg the last time it had broke. all things dinah can fix, or at least get to being mostly functional.
the oven’s a bit of a different thing, because there’s gas involved. and dinah knows that’s what he means— that fixing a fridge gasket and fixing an oven wiring problem are far different in terms of the line between consequences and payoff. safety.
but still. it takes dinah a second, one long inhale followed by a long exhale. the issue of the money rattles around in her brain, mean and loud, and she has to wrestle with it as she sits back on her heels and lets the oven door slam shut. “fine. i’ll go to an appliance store next weekend.” the words come out like she’s physically being pained to admit that he might be right. “you wanna order dinner?”
sender arrives to receiver's place drunk and injured.
mia gives her a heads up before the knock on the door followed by a shout of her name that likely wakes her neighbors. hey, dad’s messed up, and he only wants to see you. i followed him over to make sure he was okay, but it’s a school night and i gotta head home.
and the thing is that she’s not really talking to ollie right now, but that doesn’t stop dinah from finding a mostly-clean sweatshirt off the floor and pulling it over her head on her way off the couch and over to the door.
he looks like shit, cut to hell and smelling like a bar. eye’s red, probably gonna be swollen and black and blue by morning. “vodka on a wednesday night’s a bold choice,” dinah says after a moment, pushing aside most of her on phase in her anger towards him to reach for his arm and pull him inside. she’ll stop being angry at him sometime soon. she always does. she wasn’t programmed to do much besides love him, she thinks. “you wanna tell me what happened?”

yeah, i'm back in town.
i wanna see [ name ], okay?
well, that's not fair, is it?!
oh my god, you look.. like crap.
this long, no see? you don't get to know.
you have no idea what that costs me.
i wasn't talking about my cut, i was talking about my pride.
you've been gone for almost a year, [ name ]. i'm not judging, just saying.
i'm not judging, just saying.
oh, you robbed her body.
you can do better.
what the hell is wrong with you?
look at me, you understand? look at me!
use it, or hang it up, okay?
do not snap towels at me, [ name ], i had a very traumatic childhood.
get in the car, damn it! we're late!
suddenly you don't give a damn, i get pissed.
now, you had better be ready. are you ready?
you're sure as hell overdressed.
what, were you out all night or something?
i know this shit is as hard as it gets, but you gotta stop making it worse.
"fashionably late", you called it?
stick to your statement and you'll be fine.
i panicked, what do you want me to say?
where's your wit gone?
you haven't called me dipshit all day.
i know this thing's got you all twisted up, but you've got to forgive yourself.
[ name ], i know you're in there! open the door now!
it's not coming back to you?
i'm not sure i should say anything at all.
i don't want to talk about [ name ].
you need to talk to me about that moment.
feels like she's lying about something.
deep down, we all hope we're special.
the last thing i am is special.
oh. you're disappearing again?
weren't you coming back this weekend?
i got sick to my stomach, i basically puked on them.
what did you do to your hair? ... it's longer.
why are you such a dick?
first, though, you need a shower. and a xanax.
just keep away from me!
your partner. he was following you.
[ name ], where have you been?
there's blood everywhere!
holy shit, it's true ... that someone is killing us.
you need to get rid of the body.
uh ... how about you come help me?
for starters, you're a drug dealer.
of course not, you think we'd let that happen?
i don't ... nothing, i don't want to talk about it.
that's my one bit of good news.
is that so much to ask?
bastard must've followed me and nicked it.
okay, let's not go off ... [ name ], [ name ] !
how long can you keep gaming the cops?
what the hell are you doing?
i'm worried you're losing the plot again.
sorry, i've got a lot of work to do.
you're not ready for this, you need to take more time.
is that a diagnosis? cause i've got plenty of professional help for that.
i can't keep waking up at night, checking your breathing.
i knew it was too good to be true.
why would you help with such a stupid plan?
that was when i drew my weapon.
i'm not dirty, i just freaked out.
why would you go in my room?
the sink is broken, what the hell is wrong with you?
are you out of your mind?
idiot. do you even know who you're talking to?
i don't care who you are.
please just tell me ... who are we to each other?
are you kidding me? i'm not doing that.
you need to get out of here.
let go, don't touch me.
hide your ugly face on the way out.
what i'm trying to do is move on.
that's not gonna work for me.
does that sound stoned to you?
don't stop, someone might speak to us.
my skin breaks out every time we come downtown.
you point a gun at me again, i'll kick the living shit out of you.
what the hell were you doing here?
seriously, it's life or death.
you can't just ignore it!

SMOKE SEASON 1
❝ You need anything before I leave? ❞
he’s hesitating with one foot out the door because he loves her. because, after everything they’ve been through, done to themselves and each other, they still revolve around one another like magnets. and what dinah knows, is that even here, still in their respective suits, surrounded by the remains of a busted up mob ring, is that he means what he’s asking. she could open her mouth and ask for anything right now— the moon, the stars, the deed to his condo in gotham, and he’d give it to her.
anything means anything when it comes to her, she’s learned. and ain’t that something.
“i, uh— i could go for dinner right now.” she pushes strands of bleach-damaged hair out of her face with one hand, checks her watch with the other. “breakfast, even. if you’ve got the time.”
and then the words she knows he actually wants to hear. “and i’ll let you pay?”
spider-man: into the spider-verse taken from the 2018 movie.
you on your way. just keep going.
i love you. you don’t have to say it back, though.
look, sometimes people drift apart. and i don’t want that to happen to us, okay?
this is my fault.
our family doesn’t run from things.
i don’t think you have a choice, kiddo.
look, call me when you can. okay? i love you.
we all have powers.
you’ve got to say “i love you” back.
got a lot going through your head, i’m sure. you’re gonna be fine.
hey, bud. you okay?
please open the door. (name), i can see your shadow moving around.
i’ll always have my family.
i’m sorry. i can’t do this without you.
hey, it’s okay. we’re gonna figure it out.
they’re counting on me.
you can’t think about saving the world. you have to think about saving one person.
of course you can stay.
i see this spark in you. it’s amazing. it’s why i push you, but… it’s yours. whatever you choose to do with it, you’ll be great.
i let you down, man, i let you down.
mom, i’ve gotta go.
yeah, i’m okay. you’re probably busy, so…
how am i supposed to save the whole world?
(name), you’re gonna get yourself killed.
can i sleep here tonight?
that’s all it is, (name). a leap of faith.
look, i know i don’t always do what you need me to do. or say what you need me to say, but i’m… i see this spark in you. it’s amazing. it’s why i push you, but… it’s yours. whatever you choose to do with it, you’ll be great.
one thing i know for sure: don’t do it like me. do it like you.
i wanna do what you asked. i really do. i’m sorry.
(name), the hardest thing about this job is… you can’t always save everybody.
This job is going to rip her heart out — and I don’t want a front row seat.

they'd been technically dating for two or three months when she told him she loved him. she was downright plastered after one of the house parties, after everyone had left and she'd showered and changed into one of his shirts. they were laying in bed, eating fruit snacks and staring at the ceiling, and dinah rolled onto her side, told him she loved him, and then passed right out. she didn't remember it the next morning, broke up with him initially shortly thereafter because the absolute enormity of her feelings scared the shit out of her ("we were just having fun" to "i love you" pipeline--).
she wears a pair of his socks to bed every night. and almost every night, at least one of those socks always comes off in bed, and she always forgets to go looking for it. so when it comes time to change the sheets, there's anywhere from two to seven singular socks shoved into the bottom of the bed.
for peak 2000s/early 2010s cringe, the song that she got up on a table and tipsy sang that made him fall in love was absolutely lady marmalade (pink's verse, to be specific, but she did the entire song from memory, including the lil kim rap).
they, as people, tend to be so busy that on slow days/weekends, they're the type to rot on the couch. and it's not even a cute rot, it'll be like — all of the chores got done in the morning, so tommy's been half laying on top of dinah for god knows how many hours, and her hand is halfway down his pants from the time she thought she might want sex, and then abruptly changed her mind. there is popcorn down the front of both of their shirts, and neither have bothered to clean it out. it was light out when they sat down to watch tenet, but they didn't understand it the first time, so now they have to watch it again. at one point, dinah managed to get up and find a plate of fruit and some cold pizza in the fridge, and that was dinner. they might need a second dinner soon, no one knows. it's her favorite way to pass a saturday afternoon nowadays.
"tommy loved you." "laurel, i failed him."
‘ it’s you and me. ’
" you trying to take me home, merlyn ? " dinah's grinning as she reaches out her good arm — the one that's not sporting two new bullet holes and a sprained wrist from where she'd fallen on it. normally it wouldn't be anything she'd blink at, but the bullets had come as a result of her day job — captured by nearly every local news outlet on the front steps of the courthouse, so she couldn't really get away with the team's usual underground medical care.
so — cut to a hospital, with all of the attention that she doesn't need, and a dutiful husband who shows up with a spare shirt and a car to take her home when she gets discharged. dinah waits next to the desk, lets tommy handle the paperwork, because it's been a long day, and then takes his hand when he offers it.
it's you and me — it's all she really wants in the moment, prosecuting white collar criminals, and her job, and the mask be damned for the day. her body hurts, and she's fucking hungry, and all of the bad guys are where they're supposed to be for now, so she follows tommy out to the car, gets tucked in with a long groan, leans her head back against the seat. when he's in, her head lolls a bit, and she lets out a long breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. " can we get takeout on the way ? "
