I went through Harrow the Ninth spending the whole time being like “wow it sure is funny that the author keeps bringing up trashy romance novels” only to realize that was Muir lampshading the fact that harrow is the romantic female lead not really of Gideon but the story overall.

The people and narrative are forcibly injecting Harrow into the troupes of romance. She’s getting a sexy makeover. She’s going to the ball. She’s having the awkward talk with the mentor. She meets a cute girl at the coffee shop. Ianthe just fully believes she is the ‘Draco in leather pants’ to Harrow’s repressed delicate FL. Etc.
