Sorry if you've been asked this before, but the Harpy monk and Elite both look like... actual characters? Were they originally gonna be more than what they are? Cuz when I got to Nef I thought the harpy clan would be a similar story but no they're just sorta around. And yeah there's plenty of well designed and detailed basic enemies, like the Dark Horse and the Loot Scooter, and even anthro ones like the Cosmic Warriors and MP Automatons, but I could really see the Harpy clan just chilling somewhere in a mountain in their own little town like they look like they have lore.

No, the harpies were never intended to be more than random enemies. Ironically Nef was also just supposed to be an enemy, as she was in SLARPG's predecessor project, but I was so fond of the design I came up with for her that I wanted to turn her into an actual character.

I can't remember if it was me or Anthony who came up with the harpy concept, but either way he designed them with the intent that they would be an obvious departure from the silly little guys the party had fought up to that point, marking a point where the adventure is starting to get serious. We're not just fighting cartoon crabs and frogs anymore, now we're fighting A Person.

They did end up kind of standing out in the game though because there are so few other humanoid enemy types encountered after them, yeah. This is mostly because silly little guys are just easier for me to design and draw lol. I was usually drawing all of the enemies for an area in a batch in like 2-3 days near the end of any given milestone to quickly populate an area I had already designed, so I tended to take the path of least resistance.

There really isn't more to them than what the bestiary entries explain, though. They're asshole martial artists who showed up one day and started testing their skills by challenging random adventurers (and hikers) to battle. I could absolutely do more with them, but I also think it's important to have things in the world that are only lightly touched on where the player is left to imagine beyond the bounds of the narrative.
