I actually have a masquito question! Iirc citronella candles are bullshit right? If so what would be the best way to make a backyard more pleasant to grill out in outside of dosing myself in bugspray. I get huge hives from the bites and need to figure something out.
Yeah, there really arenât hardly any scent products that actually work well on mosquitoes. DEET is unfortunately one of the only chemicals that will work, but itâs not great for people or the environment.Whatâs actually much more effective though? A strong fan. If you can plug in a big box fan, or several, aimed at you while youâre cooking and where youâre sitting and eating, it will blow away a big chunk of mosquitoes because they fly very very weakly.
As it happens, one of my day jobs involves testing spatial and topical insect repellents. In my experience, most spatial repellents are basically useless. The exceptions to that rule being metofluthrin-based ones, which are very capable of keeping the mosquito population down, but do so by just straight killing all the mosquitoes and all other insects in the area, and are also pretty toxic to aquatic vertebrates.
However, I will say that on the subject of topical repellents, I strongly suggest looking into ones with the active ingredient PMD/lemon eucalyptus oil. Itâs less nasty than DEET, and in all the arm-in-cage studies Iâve partaken in, PMD based repellents were shockingly effective. In particular, I donât think theyâre on the market yet, but keep an eye out for products that combine a high PMD percentage with vanillin. The repellency on that shit was ridiculous plus it smelled pretty good.
Oh this is a rad addition!!
âFirst, I must confess that over the last few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negroâs great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizenâs Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to âorderâ than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justiceâ - Martin Luther King Jr, Letters from Birmingham Jail.
Did Bidenâs brain fucking fall out of his head? He wasnât like this before was he?
Pssssst⊠He was always like this. In fact you can argue he was even worse in the past, since at least now he isnât pushing for a constitutional ban on abortion and gay rights, or on âlocking those people upâ during the 94 Crime Bill (itâs a long video, but I recommend watching it for the clips of Biden)
Y'allâre seeing the real Biden now, not the Uncle Joe meme.
This situation in Sudan makes me so so so so so mad and angry because they CUT OFF the Internet so people canât say whatâs happening there and they rely on US to be SAVED because theyâre currently living a NIGHTMARE they canât even go to the streets NORMALLY and they canât do ANYTHING ABOUT IT BECAUSE THERE IS NO INTERNET. THE SUDANESE PEOPLE RELY ON US. DO SOMETHING.

Happy Fatherâs day I just remembered the best pair of tweets Iâve ever seen
IM FCKING SCREAMINNGNGNGSKLNSGK
One thing I worry about in society is how autistic people seem to be more at risk for getting in trouble for things they didnât even do all because of not understanding the situation in the first place
For example: I remember one time I was shopping at a supermarket, and after paying, a staff member walked up to me, and without explaining why, asked me if they could look inside my bag. I was only aware they suspected me of shoplifting (which I hadnât) because of a previous post Iâd read about another autistic in a similar situation. Imagine if an autistic person, unaware of the hidden context, declined to let them look inside the bag. Theyâd already be deemed as suspicious when in reality, they just didnât want someone to look inside
Another time I was about to go to a university party organised by the university itself. I was carrying an empty Coca-Cola bottle ONLY because I was drinking one beforehand, and couldnât find a bin. Without warning, a staff member grabbed my empty bottle and took it away. At first I thought they were just being helpful until I saw the stern look on their face, and then I was confused (only later did I realise they might have thought I would refill it with alcohol later on or something). When I was unable to get in due to not having enough money, I had a shutdown due to the noise and confusion, and was then screamed at to get out despite the fact I did nothing wrong
This is the kind of thing autistic people have to deal with. Society has to learn to understand that just because a person isnât reacting the way you expect, and seems âsuspiciousâ, doesnât mean they are. Thereâs a high chance theyâre an autistic person who may not be fully understanding of the situation at hand, especially when the other person isnât explicit about whatâs going on
as a black autistic person this type of shit is so fucking dangerous and common for me
im already âsuspiciousâ for being black and my autism makes other ppl see me as a direct threat
ive had white and non black allistic people threaten to call the cops on me for stimming inside stores, push me out of places bc âlooking like i was casing the placeâ (no i just wear sunglasses constantly bc light is too much), ive been in situations where i had to pinch myself n make my inner palm bleed to make sure i wasnt being nonverbal to a cop that could just kill me for not responding 110% calm and nice or stimming bc âsudden movementâ is dangerous coming from a black body, ive had other white autistics call me weird and suspicious for doing the same things they do bc they inherently see my blackness as something to watch out for
a lot of what âsuspiciousâ is about is based on racist and ableist and as someone whos always gonna be getting the brunt of suspicion in society bc my blackness affects every aspect of how im treated, i think its important to bring up that white autistics are often going to be given the benifit of the doubt, offered empathy and shown more respect when dealing with the situation of doing something âwrongâ in the eyes of allistic people
for a white autistic, not understanding/processing a situation makes you suspicious
but for black autistic people were always assumed a threat to the safety of others so things escalate pass suspicion very quickly
a cop may see a white or lightskinned autistic person having a meltdown in public and see the autism and still might harass u about it (bc acab) but they will bring more empathy to you durring that time
a cop might see me a black person having a meltdown in public and try to arrest me,might shoot at me bc they feel âthreatenedâ might use excessive force bc i look âaggressiveâ or they have no patience for being nonverbal, might harass me bc i âlook out of placeâ
this isnt just cops tho, its the whole damn world, ableism and antiblackness together is so terrifying and it kills
When my daughter asks me why I named her Rhony Iâll just show her this video

iâm going to request that non-trans women reblog this (and make sure to tag it as transmisogyny ffs)
A person with an abusive nature will always register you standing up for yourself as an act of betrayal. Betray them.
This is so important. As a good person, you may choose to stick around to prove to someone that youâre not a bad person. You have nothing to prove to a bad person. You cannot help everyone. You cannot fix everyone. Itâs not your fault.

To give you perspective , I dont really feel my legs unless Iâve worked out for at least five minutes and itâs been like this for a couple years now so when the first couple seconds popped up I was like âyoo this kinda sounds good? Familiar?â Then THAT shift happened and istg I could feel all of my limbs and they all were screaming at me with the fight or flight response. Freaked me the fuck out man but good song
come listen to my song, it will tear off your fucking legs
âOh, your song slaps? Thatâs cute. This one amputates.â
if i had my soul itâd escaped at this
Opposite of the original song, no contagious dancing, only paralyzing fear.

Iâve said this before and Iâll say it again but it is absolutely an example of civilizational inadequacy that only deaf people know ASL
âoh we shouldnât teach children this language, it will only come in handy if they [checks notes] ever have to talk in a situation where itâs noisy or they need to be quietâ
My mom learned it because she figured sheâll go deaf when she gets old
My family went holiday SCUBA diving once, and a couple of Deaf guys were in the group. I was really little and I spent most of the briefing overcome with the realization that while the rest of us were going to have regulators in our mouths and be underwater fairly soon, they were going to be able to do all the same stuff and keep talking.
The only reason some form of sign language is not a standard skill is ableism, as far as I can tell.
For anyone interested in learning, Bill Vicars has full lessons of ASL on youtube that were used in my college level classes.Â
