I was reading Mathilda, and there's all these monologues about the protagonist going insane from loneliness and not knowing how to act when she finally strikes up a friendship again; she has retired to a cottage in the woods and is essentially in hiding. All this time we're given the impression that she is utterly alone in that cottage. Much woe about the completeness of her loneliness. and then.

what do you mean your servant ...? in your cottage in the woods where you were so utterly alone? that one?

pt 2, this time Frankenstein by the same. Said Frankenstein is greatly relieved when he returns and the 'apartment was empty' because this means his monster has fled. but then

...did that servant materialise out of thin air to bring him food in his room. The place not actually empty, just empty of people of his own class. he just left the servant and his monster with each other while he was out.

Eventually the monster was like "well this is awkward. I'm out." and the servant presumably just filed the encounter under "weird shit upper class people do" and went on with his life.

I remember taking this college elective on film adaptations and we talked about the controversy caused by the PBS adaptation of Emma, which made a point of putting servants in every. single. scene, confronting the audience with the reality that the main characters are surrounded by servants constantly and are choosing not to acknowledge their presence. Emma is consoling her "poor" friend Harriet over her misfortune and the entire time a servant is standing there silently brushing Emma's hair or some shit. Virtually every other adaptation of Emma does a very good job of invisiblizing the constant presence of the working class labor force that allowed these people to live the way they did.

What to do with a vessel?

In chapter 2 Gojou asks Megumi what should they do with Yuuji despite the fact that there is clear law: he has to be killed. Megumi says he wants to save Yuuji.

In chapter 72 Getou asks Gojou what should they do if Riko doesn't want to merge. Gojou says they will give her a choice. In the same chapter Riko muses how lonely she is without her parents and her desire to merge was partially desire to not feel alone anymore. Yuuji is also shown to be a kid that can easily connect with others but other than Wasuke he had no one else.

I think we can talk about Yuuji and Riko as similar characters with similar fate. Riko being selected to be a vessel for Tengen and Yuuji made to be vessel for Sukuna. Both potential powerful sorcerers intended to be killed. Both sacrifices however to different ideological views that are bubbling under the surface. Tengen is all about stagnation. She lives in the basement. She doesn't go out and she's afraid of change. Her technique is immortality and barrier techniques. Keeping things inside and as they are forever. Kenjaku's ideology is constant fluidity and change. Riko's sacrifice is a sacrifice to be made to keep the world as is. Yuuji's eventually death of the soul to be Sukuna's vessel is a sacrifice through Culling games as a bid for change.

Both are attempted to be saved by Gojou.

Megumi and Getou are especially interesting in this context. In both cases Gojou already made up his mind about it but Getou prompting a question makes Gojou to prompt him back "are you afraid? We are the strongest."

Gojou asking Megumi is the same trick he wants to see how Megumi will react, if he's afraid. Megumi isn't.

Since Gojou's objective with his students is to gather strong allies the prompting is exactly for that. To see if his student is not afraid to stick by his side when he choses to go on his mass murder spree.

reading about the participation of children in rituals as a form of play in ancient greece and came across an incredibly charming story from julius pollux's onomasticon where a flood prevented the adults from reaching a sanctuary to sacrifice a ram to heracles, and the children solved the problem by....sticking a bunch of sticks in an apple to give it "legs" and "horns" and offering it as a sacrifice instead. it's such a charming thought and i can perfectly picture kids these days also pretending at sacrificing an apple "goat" at recess

Tldr Amnesty International, global human rights organisation, published a report called 'A growing threat: the anti-rights movement in the UK'. In it is detailed, amongst others, a whole bunch of transphobic groups and organisations, including Beira's Place, JK Rowling's trans exclusionary sexual violence support service. JK Rowling threw a shit fit and got Amnesty to take the report down by threatening libel. This was obviously not enough, because you can't appease a fascist, so now she's going to bankroll a bunch of lawsuits anyway through the JK Rowling Women's Fund.*

The problem with trying to fix The X-Files is that its writing and characterisation are so wildly uneven even from episode to episode within a given season that most of the time your "improved" version will just end up being an accurate description of a specific episode of The X-Files.

I watched the Odyssey today and my best friend won’t be able to watch for two weeks so here are all my thoughts (I found it mid at best)

- The cyclops part annoyed tf out of me not only because Nolan cut off the Nobody part but also because Odysseus’ motivation for killing it was so thin? Like I get that hubris is his undoing but this was objectively not a smart thing to do- and Odysseus is smart!

- Tom Holland’s Telemachus might be the most sympathetic iteration of this character, he’s genuinely compelling as a young, lost boy trying to make things work in an impossible world (it’s not new for him, but god does he play it well)

- I expected more appearances from the gods considering that they’re mentioned repeatedly. I did enjoy Zendaya as Athena, but I’d have liked to see more.

- I think this might be a Nolan thing but flashing back to that one scene of Odysseus leaning against the wall really broke the narrative flow sometimes- like I’ve seen that shot multiple times I get the point please stop showing it?

- my main gripe with the story: that man is not Odysseus. Where is the charm? The wit? The cunning? Like I understand that it was to show the toll of war but having him slowly lose himself and become more unhinged is the plot of the actual myth, whereas in this one he begins looking tired and haggard. They could have shown him having so much more personality than they did. Also his relationship with Penelope was so…..milquetoast and saddening? Like she suffered the same personality loss that he did ig.

- I expected more from the reunion of Argos and Odysseus like I know there might have been time constraints but this is a v poignant part of the myth that seems to have been flattened somehow.

I did enjoy some elements of it but overall it did seem like a story bent to suit Nolan’s artistic vision, which to be fair is something every adaptation undergoes. I think if the pitfalls of war was the point, so many other stories could have been told (Agememnon and Clytemnestra’s (a role that Lupita killed in this movie btw), Helen’s, even Achilles!)

Americans really really need to be less paranoid and more capable of tolerating minor discomfort in public. Not everyone is a pervert/rapist/strangler/fiend. In fact, very few people are. Treating every violation of normal order as though it is a threat is why people are getting shot for turning around in a stranger's driveway. This happens within the frameworks of basically every ideology present in American culture. It is an American illness. If your vision of the world doesn't have room for saying "I'm sure it's nothing" then you really gotta work some shit out.
