what had happened a few nights ago was horrible, klara knew that. she had shared in the grief with other people and felt terrible for what happened. but she had seen things like this before in her dreams. terrible things plagued them, so she felt like she should be used to it by now. but still, she wasn’t.

“i’m sure they will be caught soon enough, dear sister. i’ve seen aurors scuttling around the streets every hour since it happened. it will be resolved soon enough.”

“Well, I sure hope so, darling,” she said- a rare, gentle smile overtaking her expression. She lolled her head, examining Klara. Disa cupped her face in one hand, tilting her chin so that Klara would meet her eyes. Her smile relaxed and even looked a little apologetic as she said, “Sorry, dearheart. Should I not have brought it up?”

“ it is not like they’re dead, are they ? ” little did efthimia care. she had no children of her own, who knew which depraved soul had taken the ones that roamed the streets that night. but one thing she had clear, if anything it was their parents fault for not even having them at hand. even in the brothel there were many women who kept their bastards close, but not too close, of course. “ tell me, who do you think is responsible for such thing ? ”

She glanced up, raising an eyebrow at her. She seemed...terribly unconcerned about the situation, although Disa supposed it was a vast improvement to the constant barrage of fear and outrage from the public.

After studying her for a moment, she lifted her shoulders in a lazy shrug. “I don’t care to waste thoughts on baseless possibilities. But they must be truly vile, that’s for sure. And I don’t believe one person could have done this alone.”

It took her a moment to place the face before her with everything that had happened between the festival and the current ongoing investigations, but the woman had a rather distinct aura about her, making it easy for Petra to recognize her as the one she had been talking to when the lamps had exploded. An eyebrow quirked at her words, a question waiting to be asked. “Was there anything in particular you wanted to speak about, Miss?”

“Well, of course. I’m as- hm- concerned as anybody.” It was mostly true. Partly true.

...there was some truth to it, perhaps...

It wasn’t that Disa was a gossip, but things had been so dreadfully boring lately. Last night’s excitement was the highlight of her week. Oh, she felt pity for the families of the children that had disappeared, and even a semblance of guilt- but it was easy enough to brush these away.

“If anything, you should be able to offer a statement to us, don’t you think?” She smiled, demeanor friendly and disarming, to show she meant no harm.

“Such a shame, those children,” she said quietly. It was the first time she had spoke of the incident.

All the while she had been enjoying herself, and when the lights had gone out she thought not of the danger but instead had expressed her annoyance and discomfort. The guilt nagged at her now, although a small part of her insisted, ‘Well, I couldn’t have known!’

“I can’t imagine how those families must be feeling. Truly, how despicable those responsible are.”

she envisioned for it to bring forth elation, but elation was not quite the word she would use the describe her current feelings. how could one be elated, feel any sense of happiness, accomplishment when clearly others were in distress. she could not feel any pride, but sorrow for the grim news she shared with the world or at least, new orleans. twenty missing children, both from no-maj and wizarding families. her stare was vacant, as she sat on an empty seat in one of the many cafés of the back alley, newspaper lying on the table depicting the chaotic night and the latest news. “ this is horrific. ”

“Isn’t it, though?” Disa spoke up from the next table over, surprisingly somber. She couldn’t help but overhear, so she had turned in her seat to study the young woman near her. Her eyes ran over the woman’s face while her own remained mostly expressionless, although made to look a little mournful.

“Were you there, darling?” She asked sympathetically, gesturing at the paper.

Though the city’s aurors had done a lot the previous night to investigate the incidents that had occurred during the festival, there was still much work to be done. They had cordoned off an area that had seen much damage, perhaps the site of the first explosion, though such information still had to be confirmed. A crowd of prying eyes had led Petra to the perimeter and she spoke directly to them, hoping that they would disperse. “Nothing to see here. Unless you have a statement to contribute, it is best that you be on your way.”

“A statement? No, no - it is you I wanted to speak with, actually. We were separated rather quickly last night. I hadn’t realized you were an auror,” Disa said, tilting her head. The woman stood like one, Disa thought. Such a sweet looking thing, and yet her eyes had a sort of fierceness in them. “Come now, surely you have time for someone you’ve shared words with.” That was hardly the case, but it wasn’t untrue.

two men were her entertainment of the night. they promised to get the best drinks, the most delicious food and while they indulged on her company. this was no bother to efthimia, knowing far too well how to pull the strings of men. if anything, it was her who would benefit of the night. it was all play and games, until the streets turned dark and screams was all that pierced through her ears. her first reaction had been to raise her eyebrows in pure amusement of what it could have been, but her second, as anyone else had been to plague herself with a hint of fear, just the slightest ––– fear for the unknown. she half ran among the avalanche of people that seemed to crowd the streets when she bumped into someone, head first. “ dear god. ”

She had hardly been enjoying herself. Someone had spilled their drink on her dress earlier that night, and now people were making a spectacle of themselves - and for what? Some prank? For that’s what this was, surely. Disa didn’t want to entertain the small part of her that protested, but what if it isn’t? As she collided with someone, she bit back her instinctive snap and said levelly, “Excuse me. I’m afraid people are just - ugh - shoving, now.”

She nodded. “That is one way to put it.” Eyes glance at the drink in the other woman’s hand. Petra herself had not had any of the liquid refreshments offered, nor was she planning to for the rest of the night — she knew what the cups contained, and though she was in a lighter mood, she would still much rather keep a clear head. “Festivals? I’ve attended several – though this would be my first here in New Orleans.”

She opened her mouth to reply, when suddenly -

She heard the sounds of screaming before it had even registered that it had gone dark. She jerked as someone bumped into her from behind, dropping her drink and spilling some on her dress. For once, she didn’t even mind.

“What was that?” Disa heard herself asking, but it seemed as though she were far away from herself, a faint ringing in her ears.

It seemed as though the French Quarter had transformed itself overnight. Music filled the streets, smiles were plastered on people’s faces, and the city itself was lit up more than usual, lamplights seemingly dancing along to the vibrant energy of the crowd. It was indeed a night to be enjoyed, though for Petra, it was also a night to be vigilant, for such a gathering should warrant tighter security — not for the alcohol, there were bigger matters at hand. It was easy to blend in with the festival-goers, easy to have her mood be affected by the general atmosphere, so much so that she turned to the person beside her with a smile. “Enjoying the festivities?”

Disa hummed, a playful, lilting sound. “Well, it is rather quaint, isn’t it? Well - perhaps not the right word to use. But this is...entertaining enough, I suppose.” Of course, she had a drink in her hand. The festival wasn’t like the lavish parties she was used to, but she meant it when she said she was at least having fun. The people were less uptight, more eager to flirt, more eager to play in conversation. “And you?” she side-eyed the young woman. “Do you come to these often?”“

“You want to think about work at this time of night? My, my. What an unexpected surprise.” He didn’t exactly need the extra help tonight, though with Disa offering, he supposed he could try a little something. Hand on her shoulder, he turned her around, directing her attention to a group seated at the opposite side of the room. “See the man with the walking stick? Find out what you can about him. If it helps, imagine you’re putting together a rough dossier.”

Ugh. Dealing with men like that. Disa could handle a lot of things, of course, but that didn’t mean she enjoyed it. But of course, she had offered, and she couldn’t back out now.

She left Kristoffer for a while, sending him one last cheeky glance that she didn’t really mean, and went to join the men at the table, sliding into their conversation seamlessly.

tessa just stared at his sister-in-law, unable to answer the other’s query, knowing that she’d earned a glare from her honest answer. she stretched her arms to chase the stolen notepad, her pen making a squiggly line on the paper from when it was taken. “writing is my job. so don’t ask me why i’m writing.” she replied in frustration. “i was going to drink when i’m done. thanks for losing my muse.” she added, snatching a drink that has been idle for a couple of seconds already.

“Tessa,” she said, irritation plain on her face. “you agreed to accompany me. I didn’t force you. Now stop being such a pain in the ass, and let me enjoy myself.”

She huffed, frustrated with her sister-in-law and friend. She got along much better with Kristoffer, but of course she loved Tessa just as much. She could just be so annoying when she was in a mood like this.

“Oh no, just curious,” Tommy said, chuckling along with her. He leaned in a little closer as she whispered, eyes widening at the mention of the ingredient. An Occamy egg was certainly rare, and highly valuable. “Your job? Do you work with potions, Miss?”

He smiled, looking around the shop once more before he answered. “Well, I overheard that you could find Sneakoscopes here, and not just the pocket-sized ones. Thought it’d be worth a look.”

“I do, in fact. Ever heard of the Silfvergard Brewery? It’s my brother-in-law’s, and I work there with my sister.”

“Hm, well. You’re looking in the wrong section, my dear. They’re over there.” She pointed at the far end of the shop. “But somehow I’m not fully convinced that’s all you’re here for, darling.”

Halden attempted to walk away but Disa grabbed his arm, forcing him to stop in his tracks. Slowly his head turned to look at his sister, sad eyes meeting hers before she pulled him into a hug. Halden hesitated for a moment, surprised at her reaction. He didn’t deserve this, she should be yelling and screaming at him for what he had done. Instead she chose to embrace him and it caught him off guard. Finally his own arms moved up to wrap around Disa. “Alive?” he finished his sisters question. “It’s a long story,” he said, knowing full well he could make it short and to the point if he wanted to - but he didn’t want to.

She squeezed her eyes shut and sighed before letting him go. She was furious, but so, so glad. She was still somewhat convinced that this was a dream. “We have time,” she said. “Come with me. Talk to me, please, bror. We will go to my place, have some - some tea, anything. Just - don’t leave. Not again,” Disa said firmly.

“Somebody has to, otherwise, you wouldn’t be having this much fun,” he said with a shrug. The words, of course, were said in jest — Disa was her own animal, this, he had known for years. He came along for the party, her antics always amusing him in some way. Her question though, had him shaking his head. “Oh, I’m not here for entertainment tonight. I’m doing a little research. For business.”

“Research now, is it? And you neglected to inform me?” she said, cheekily. “Well then, I can’t afford to slack off, can I.” She nudged him, and poked him on the cheek with a manicured finger. “What can I do, just tell me.”

tessa was scribbling furiously at her notepad in frustration. they had just made her watch a stupid movie and she was trying her best to write words that didn’t include ‘it sucked’ or ‘please make room for a better movie’ or ‘kristoffer would fuck his wife watching this movie because that’s how bad it is’. she was in the middle of a sentence when disa stole her attention. “what the hell? are you drunk or something?”

She made a miffed sound. “Have you not been paying attention to me at all?” Disa snatched the notepad from Tessa in irritation. “What are you even writing? We’re in a bar, and you’re acting like a wet blanket. Have a goddamn drink,” she grumbled, turning her nose up at her friend.

there was no way to suppress the laughter that threatened to escape her lips. oh, her sister always found her ways to make her smile, even in the darkest of times. there were times she felt responsible for her, even when it was meant to be the other way around. and that feeling overwhelmed her greatly at the moment. “ you cannot deny, i am always right. ” she jokingly said, whilst eyeing the other’s drink. she did wish she could consume one or two brews, if anything to aid the mild stress she currently felt. regarding her comment ––– to each their own, she supposed, when it came to the desire of having children. she herself had yearned for one since she got wed, but not much luck she have had throughout the years, not until now, of course. “ it is not that much of a hassle as some say, but it can get stressful at times, i will not deny. sometimes i do wonder how mother did, with so many children. ”

She turned away slightly, moving around with her drink, but keeping close enough to be heard. “Mother was...you are a much better mother than her, I can assure you.” Disa believed that with all her heart. She held much bitterness towards her parents, although when she was younger she did all they wished. Even - debase herself, in front of all those men. “Although, you are always right, my dear.” She looked at Lotten with absolute adoration in her eyes.

He could tell that she didn’t buy his little half-truth, though he was thankful that she didn’t seem to take any offense. If anything, she seemed quite amused to him, and he didn’t know whether or not this should make him feel more self-conscious. He focused on her words, nodding slowly as she spoke. It was true — the things he’d seen around the store seemed quite uncommon. “You’re right. You got me,” he admitted. “To be honest, I only overheard about this place a few days ago. What sort of ingredients are you looking for?”

“Nosy, are you?” She chuckled good-naturedly. She whispered conspiratorially, “Can you keep a secret? Today’s hunt, if I’m lucky enough, could yield an Occamy egg. Not a lot of potions use it, but the rarer ones are my specialty. Even I like a challenge, sometimes. And the man I work with,” at this she let out an amused breath of air, “would probably appreciate it if I put more of an effort into doing my job. “Now, your turn.” She raised an eyebrow. “Surely you don’t expect a lady to give without expecting anything in return?”
