What Pixar’s Coco got right
I just got back from my third trip to Mexico, and rewatched Pixar’s Coco. I was pleasantly surprised to see a lot of familiar sights!
From the small towns to big cities, colorful decorations are stretched across the streets!
Especially in small towns, family business are painted onto the buildings, usually with the family name and date of establishment.
I laughed at this line, because it’s true!! There are a lot of “perros de calle” in small towns, and they’re super sweet and love to beg for food. My sister made the mistake of naming this street dog and he didn’t stop following us for the three days we stayed in this town.
I don’t know how they get up there.
We shot off our New Years’ fireworks in a plaza that looks a lot like this.
Many ancient cultures who inhabited Mexico used this style of pyramid for temples, houses, and administrative buildings.
The entrance to the Land of the Dead looks a lot like the Aztecs’ depiction of their rain god.
At artisan markets you can find shops filled with intricately and brightly painted animals. I knew they looked familiar!
Mexico has some the best street art I’ve ever seen. Walls, businesses, doors, and even multistory office buildings are covered in bright, beautiful murals.
A common Mexican breakfast or holiday food is sweet bread, and you can buy them to your heart’s content at any bakery.
You know a lot of research went into this movie when I feel like I’m back in Mexico just watching it! Amazing work, Pixar!!
