I was talking about this with a friend but a really interesting cultural shift over the last ohhhhhh ten years maybe is that many people in fandoms view themselves as stakeholders and not audience members. Because of that, they think that the fandom should be running things, or at least have an acknowledged say in how something is run. And every reminder that they are not in control, no matter how small, bothers them.

my actual hot takes about Bridgerton are

(1. Eloise's season should have been next, and it should have been about her U-Hauling with a this-time-canonically-trans-lesbian Sir Philip after Penelope marrying Colin shattered her heart open, because Eloise's disdain for marriage to men + her close friendship with Penelope + her interest in women's rights and women being taken seriously as people with interests outside motherhood and romance = classic dyke coding, and Philip hating his own masculinity and struggling with fatherhood and failing at being a husband to a cishet woman and trying to hide his non-masculine interests from Eloise and connecting instantly with such a readable-as-lesbian character all make him way more interesting as a repressed trans lesbian who Eloise helps to come out and escape the closet.

(2. the amount of people who act like Eloise being a lesbian is somehow "stereotypical" is about the most infuriating thing I've ever encountered. same with the insistence that Franchaela is somehow more progressive than any ship involving Eloise because Francesca is more threatening to the patriarchy - she's not. assimilationist femme sapphics don't threaten the patriarchy more than vocal feminists who disdain the institution of marriage in ways that make men uncomfortable because they can't be easily ignored. it can be true that Franchaela seems like a cool appealing storyline that you want to see happen without Franchaela being the most progressive thing in the world (because as sapphic romances go, it's exceedingly safe, see my below point).

(3. my problem with Franchaela is that "I looked at you, fell instantly in love, knew that I could never have you because you were marrying my brother, and knew that this would be such a problem for me that I had to move to India to avoid you because I would never in my life be able to escape how much I adored you", which is book!Michael's storyline, is the kind of unhinged behavior I want from histrom dykery. by changing this, Bridgerton is robbing me of the chance to see a woman who gave herself malaria as a result of trying to escape her crush on a supposedly straight girl. I need Michaela to be weird and standoffish and awkward because she saw her brother's girl ONE TIME and immediately knew she was never going to be normal again. I need it desperately. as it is, the way their relationship is being set up in the show is about as nonthreatening to cishet audiences as it's possible to be.

(4. and that's fine, because simply having a sapphic couple as the central couple in a major romance TV show is itself a major groundbreaking choice! especially in a historical romance! especially an interracial couple where one of them is a dark-skinned Black woman! I personally would like Michaela to also behave slightly more like a yuri protagonist from one of the series with lots of truly questionable behavior from its leads, but that's because this is my post about my feelings on the show. there's a lot to celebrate here and I think it's possible to throw a party (we got a central F/F couple in Bridgerton before a central M/M couple! that's actually really great because a ton of prestige shows aimed at adult audiences default to M/M first if they're going to do romance arcs with queer characters!) while also being frustrated that the choices being made here aren't satisfying to everyone in the audience.

(5. this can be easily easily solved by also making Eloise a lesbian and making Sir Philip a trans dyke. the fact that this isn't being telegraphed so intensely that it's impossible to miss infuriates me. come on Shondaland give me U-Hauling, and late-in-life transition because sometimes you don't know things about yourself until you're over 25. this would satisfy all parties. picking one style of queer woman to make the queer woman for this show is leaving all of us lacking.

The true question stranger things fans should be asking is why they cut the Spanish from the chorus of Should I Stay or Should I Go every time it played

people saying like "oh man I really thought Algy and Jack had a gay vibe until I found out they were brothers" is funny to me because like. well. they did very much have a gay vibe. the fact that they are revealed to be brothers does not negate the gay vibe. i think you just need to make peace with the fact that those brothers had gay sex before they knew they were brothers, and they might continue to do so even now that they know they are brothers

no but really that was such a fun production... delightfully, earnestly camp. extremely queer. also a+++ incestuous polycule vibes.

all of it was so very much performance. the opening scene is pretty much a drag performance and sets the tone for everything that follows, and so's the curtain call, and so's the bit where algy cycles through outfits.

the costumes are performance in that they convey character the way any good costume ought to, but they also read like things the characters chose to wear as part of their social performance, like algy starts out in a flamboyant floral green ensemble because he is and wants to perceived as a flamboyant dandy while jack enters wearing what wants to be a very boring beige suit, which says a lot about who he is as a person but also who he wants to be seen as.

the acting: everyone is very obviously #performing in this, which possibly wouldn't work in any other medium. tv & cinema very, very rarely want to bring attention to the fact that the actors are performing because it would break immersion, but theater operates by different rules. lady bracknell is performing lady bracknell. lane the servant is performing the role of a good servant. algy and jack are both pretending to be ernest. cecily and gwendolen have an immediate connection but will perform enmity. actual earnestness is thus made all the more valuable.

the sets are performance also -- i especially liked the not at all realistic rose bushes of the not at all realistic garden, the only outside set and also the most in-your-face artificial, man-made space. the statuary of the third set i also liked, and the contrast with the classically-shaped but acid colored seats. all that artificiality and heightened reality vibe retroactively made me appreciate the first set as a performance of wealth more.

I think my favourite part of the National Theatre's The Importance of Being Earnest (aside from the costumes, the casting, the queerness, the tone, literally everything) is the stagecraft. they are running across the stage. they are frolicking. they are languishing on chaise lounges. That man dangles the handbag he was found in as a baby from the stage lights. fuck the chandelier from phantom of the opera. give me more

Not gonna lie, it's so fucking weird how people will be like "Benedict and Sophie are so beautiful together" on one hand and then "Daphne makes me sick" on the other.

Like, Daphne had no support system and was doing what she thought was right, while Benedict was directly told multiple times that Sophie could not say no to him and he continued doing what he was doing. There is a big difference there, regardless of which you think is more "romantic".

I know you're trolling but sure, I'll do this just to be informative.

Heartbreak High has an ensemble cast. Of the main cast, approximately 3 women are not queer (I say approximately because we don't know some of their sexualities)

Revolutionary Girl Utena is a metaphor for claiming your sexuality. The main characters are lesbians, there's a lesbian subplot between two of the supporting characters and several of the supporting characters are queer coded.

Please Like Me features Hannah Gadsby as a lesbian character in later espisodes. She was also a writer for the show.

In Interview with the Vampire, the relationship between Madeline and Claudia is integral to both the plot of the show and to Claudia's character.

The second season of Good Omens has a subplot about a lesbian relationship.

Additionally, Dead Boy Detectives features a lesbian as a supporting character and if I recall correctly, Our Flag Means Death features a lesbian couple in the final season.

So of the ten shows I listed, off the top of my head to be nice to people, at least five of them have queer women represented. Also, if you really want queer women in media, you should try Xena Warrior Princess, she was badass.

Queer media for distraught Stranger Things fans

You definitely should not access the shows marked with asterisks via sites like pirate bay.

Heartbreak High A netflix production based on the popular 90's Aussie show. Follow the epic highs and lows of Hartley High when basically everyone in your year is some form of queer.

Heated Rivalry I don't have access to this one but everything I've read suggests it's pretty awesome!

Revolutionary Girl Utena An anime from the 90s, the show follows Utena as she changes schools and is drawn into a surreal and mystical duelling competition.

Our Flag Means Death This comedy follows life on the pirate ship Revenge when it is taken over by Blackbeard, and the trials and tribulations of life at sea as Blackbeard's crew and the crew of the Revenge learn to work together and trust one another.

Black Sails Another one I haven't seen, but if the obsession of its fans is anything to go off, it must be good. Intended as a prequel to Treasure Island, it follows the life of Captain Flint.

Please Like Me follows Josh as he navigates life and dating after coming out and his mother's mental health crisis.

Interview With the Vampire Yet another adaptation of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. Much better than the films IMO. The framing choice is *chef's kiss*.

Torchwood Doctor Who spin off, Torchwood is tasked with investigating extraterrestrial incidents as well as guarding the Cardiff time rift. Torchwood was aimed at a more mature audience and therefore able to tackle queer themes in more depth than Doctor Who.

Dead Boy Detectives* Charles and Edwin are both dead, but instead of moving on they decided to set up a detective agency. When the subject of one of their cases, Crystal Palace, turns out to be psychic, she decides to join them.

Good Omens* An angel and a demon team up to stop armegeddon. Jury's out on this one, season 1 is a decent adaptation of the novel. Season 2 is fun if you enjoy fluff and angst.
