A moment of appreciation for the 1992 French Les Mis cartoon, which, among MANY other wild choices, apparently decides to have Valjean get a pardon (with multiple people, including Javert, testifying in court), then do a post-Seine style rescue scene:

Then, IMMEDIATELY has Javert take the name Fauchelevent and sail off to America.

Yeah, sure. Sure, why not. We love a creative adaptation.

It all happens within roughly 40 seconds.

Amazing.

If I were to make one small change to the musical adaptation of Les Miserables, it would be changing the last two lyrics of “I Dreamed a Dream” to be about Fantine’s love for Cosette, not Tholomyes.

In the book, Fantine’s “heart grows cold” towards Tholomyes after he abandons her, and from that point on Cosette is the center of her life. Her greatest dream is that the two of them will be reunited and she will have enough money for them to live together happily. Her story is not about the tragedy of “unrequited love” for Tholomyes, a bigoted middle aged rich man who manipulated and then abandoned her when she was barely out of her teenage years. it’s about the tragedy of poverty separating Fantine from her daughter, her only family.

I think the verse where Fantine sings about Tholomyes “filling her days with endless wonder” — which he didn’t, really— would be much more compelling if it were reimagined to be about the brief years she got to live with Cosette. “And still I dream she’ll come to me, and we will live the years together” is both a much better adaptation of Fantine’s character in the novel, and also a more compelling and well-written tragedy.

Fantine isn’t a woman who died of unrequited love. She’s a woman who was separated from her daughter by poverty and intense societal bigotry, and then never got to see her daughter again before those forces killed her.

I Dreamed a Dream— like On My Own— takes a character whose plotline in the novel revolved around financial/social pressures destroying their lives, and warps them into more “””universally relatable”””” ballads about unrequited love. But I don’t think they had to! because I think the reason the novel is still so beloved is because these things are still relevant, and relatable, and constant; these characters describe feelings that still exist. Financial pressures destroying your relationships, lacking the money to be seen as a human being or to take care of your family, being treated as inherently subhuman for reasons beyond your control, are all deeply universal kinds of pain!

And I think with a few small changes to the lyrics, I Dreamed a Dream— and Fantine’s character in the musical as a whole— could be much more complex and compelling than it is.
