INDIGO WARS, CHARACTER (RE)INTRODUCTION → MAISY WINTHROPE, the rightful queen
age → 25
nationality → draiobian
magic → none
excerpt →
“This would all be a lot easier if you hadn’t gone and died, you know,” she said, getting up and moving to stand under the portrait of her father. She ran her thumb along the engraved plaque at the bottom of the frame. King Elias Winthrope of Draiobia. He’d died seven months before she’d been born. “Everything would have been easier.”
She lowered her head and pressed it against the stone mantelpiece, closing her eyes and swallowing the sudden lump in her throat. He’d been king for a handful of years and had been adored by the people. It was another legacy resting on her shoulders, another name waiting for her to bring it back to its former glory, another weight on her mind.
background →
Seven months after the death of her father, Maisy was born in Bratisva, the Draiobian capital, and promised the throne when she came of age. She and her mother moved to Siebal, her mother’s childhood home, just days later to escape from the political unrest her birth caused—and the danger posed by their power-hungry relatives. She was raised there with more freedom than she would have been allowed in Bratisva, but she was also isolated from the rest of the nobility and kept sheltered from the realities of what her uncle was doing as King.
She received a top-tier education, in traditional academic subjects and in military matters, and was trained to rule. When she was thirteen, her uncle declared war on Edristan in an attempt to extend the kingdom’s territories. At seventeen, when she came of age, the war was still being waged and her uncle used it as an excuse to delay handing over the throne.
Eventually, Maisy came to peace with the fact her uncle had no intention of giving her the throne as he prepared his eldest child to be his heir. She continued her education and used it to help those in Siebal, and was happy to do so for the rest of her life.
Her mother, however, has other plans, and as Maisy’s eyes are opened to the full extent of what her uncle has done as King, she’ll have to decide how much she owes the people of her kingdom.
