love how one of jaime’s main flaws is that he is a coward. like in a more existential sense. his archetype is the brave knight, and on the surface he is that: the text keeps emphasizing that he is brave, so many characters give him that, even if they hate him. he is so strong, reckless, and unafraid of ‘physical death’ etc. but he is so terrified of things deeper than that. he keeps looking away and running away from complicated things, creating safe delusions for himself. the weirwood dream shows that so much of this is about terror. brienne calls him a craven for a reason. his arc is also very much about learning to be existentially brave: it is about existential courage

i like how so much of the weirwood dream feels like such a “childish” nightmare in certain ways. like he is afraid of the dark. he is afraid of creatures in the dark. he is afraid of being abandoned by his family to the darkness, kind of like a little boy. and yet “doom” is so abstract. it does not take shape as some powerful scary monster (though it does take shape in ‘the others’ imagery as well as the kg/rhaegar, but he does not know that). what makes him terrified and what makes his fire go out is complexity, his own ghosts, guilt, and meaning being destroyed by the contradictions of an institution and a nonsensical moral system: the loss of hope regarding the possibility of redemption. but it might not if he learns to be brave like brienne. it is her fire that then becomes the only light in the world, the only light in his darkness. and he is given that chance, and he chooses to go back to save her. then, jumping into a bear pit empty handed is very brave on the surface, but it is brave on an existential level too because it shows that jaime is not afraid to care, to have hope be rekindled, to reject his feigned moral nihilism that allowed him to justify himself, to take the leap into the pit on a metaphorical level too, “the abyss” that he was terrified of being shoved into in the dream itself. and then “I dreamed of you.” so good.
