Princess Zelda has been having ominous dreams of a great evil returning to her kingdom. Using the Divine Gemstones, she attempts to create her own seal on the weakening one she knows of. Her spell fails, and the magical artifacts scatter. Disaster will strike Hyrule and her allies if this great evil breaks free. Perhaps it’s time for the princess to quietly recruit some help.

“Zel, Garnet!” she cries out, “are you–”

“Still here! Keep moving!” the other princess shouts. Foliage crashes as the other two catch up with her, and Ruby risks a glance back. Her brother wears a hollow expression, his eyes unfocused as Zelda, face grim, drags him along by the wrist.

It was supposed to be a quiet evening stroll in the woods for the Calatian royal family. Princess Zelda is visiting, and the weather is lovely and cool.

Now Ruby’s parents are dead, and Moruge Forest is in the process of burning to the ground at the hands of a group of masked traitors. The only goal? Escape with her and her remaining companions’ lives.

I’ve been thinking about the Ruby-Garnet dynamic a lot and why it is the way it is (or will be, I suppose) in the DG comic. Wrote a little bit to explore the why portion which you can read on AO3! This turned out a bit “D&D Tragic Character Backstory” but hey, I had fun writing it 🫶

A quiet young woman with a passion for archery. Despite her soft-spoken nature, the princess has strong opinions and an impressive drive for personal improvement. She’s just has trouble expressing it due to her desire to keep the peace.

Ruby shies away from positions of power, not wanting to be in the spotlight. This hasn’t been working as well for her recently however; with her brother adjusting to his new position as King, the International Council has been reaching for her opinions more than they should be. Garnet is… not happy.

As the newly crowned king of Calatia, Garnet is scrambling to understand everything there is to being a good ruler. He spends a lot of time trying to prove himself worthy of the respect he feels as though he deserves. He is a king, after all.

This leads to him discovering the legendary Divine Gemstones, which were thought to be lost to time.

⌛️ Ooh this is an interesting question for me since I definitely struggle making characters completely from scratch. I think this is influenced by the fact I’m an artist, not a writer. For DG, almost all of the characters I make are very loosely based on a canon LoZ one, although I mostly take inspiration from the design and steal the name. I think the only exception so far is Ruby! Personalities are somewhat inspired by canon appearances, but I’ve actually pulled a lot of the way my characters act from the way my family acts. Of course there are elements of all my characters that are original, but they’re mostly just mash ups of things I like or think will make them interesting.

TLDR: I like taking parts of existing LoZ character designs and then throw the personality of someone I know in real life on that character.

❤️ I really like stories that have “full circle moments.” Essentially when the end is a reflection of the beginning, but framed entirely differently because of everything that happened. That is a trope, right?

🤔 The thing I love about LoZ is that it’s whimsical! It’s fun, it’s about friendship and family and love and saving the world. I hope I can capture that in DG.

🤢 The most fleshed out major change is the magic system! I defined it more since that was fun for me to do. It’s not that I dislike the canon stuff either, I just like more complex stuff and it works well for the story :)

I’m sure there’s other things too but that’s the first thing that came to mind.

🕰️ DG is technically placed after Zelda II: Adventure of Link, but it’s not really important to the story of DG itself aside from the fact this is the downfall timeline!

🔺A Link Between Worlds! The story, the gameplay, the art style. This game is pretty much perfect to me. I also really like Link’s Awakening and Minish Cap.

🕹️Top down for sure! Somehow in my head DG is a 3DS game. The only thing is I have genuinely no idea which character you would play as since all three of my main trio go dungeon diving 😅
